Fame (DVD)

Now, I have always been a sucker for the whole dance movie genre. "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", the "Step Up" movies, "Save the Last Dance" . . . loved them all. I guess I thought "Fame" was going to be a slightly more well-rounded (ie embracing arts OTHER than dance) version of one of those. Boy, was I wrong. I bought this DVD nearly 2 years ago now and it was only recently as I had seen the trailers on the TV for the remake of the film that I decided I would dust it off and give it a watch. I was expecting good things from the film as I can vaguely remember the TV series of the same name being so popular, I have to say I was very disappointed by it. It is the audition time at the School of Performing Arts in New York City and so many people have turned up hoping to get a place and make it in the big time. I recently purchased this on a nostalgic whim and was not dissapointed. Anyone who remembers the tv series Fame and fell in love with Leroy (Gene Anthony Ray) for refusing to wear tights to ballet class will revel in the much darker, more realistic side of teenage angst in this the movie that inspired it. When New York City's high shcool for perfomring arts opens up for the new year each department holds auditions for the new students to train in their chosen subject which could either be drama, dance or music. The Movie follows four students very closely, the four are the very shy Dorris Finseker, the very timid, gay Montgomary McNiel, the very confident Coco Hernandez and the very mixed up Raul Garcia.
