...sure how.
Evolution follows the story of a crashed meteor which is carrying alien life. Kane and Block happen to discover it, but being only mere college professors (well, so we're told) it isn't long before the government step in and take over the entire area. Kane, an ex pentagon scientist, along with Block are determined to get credit for the discovery. They, after all, were the ones to realise that the alien cells they collected from the meteor ... ...forms are popping up all over the place, including an incredibly cute dog like creature and a rather vicious dog like piranha hybrid. There's also a bird like dinosaur thingy with a rather unusual way of dealing with shoplifters (lifting the said shoplifter quite literally into the air). It all gets quite out of control, and it’s up to Kane and co to save the day (in a rather dubious fashion I might add) rather than the army (who basically ...

Could Evolution be his chance to turn the corner back into quality street? The story has one foot firmly planted in science and it's obvious that someone along the line has understood the implications of throwing an alien into a closed eco-system (like ours). But is it any good? Well yes and no. While the story itself is passable, it certainly has echoes of Ghostbusters and I'll apologise right here for the numerous comparisons ...

...them, but the jokes in Evolution seem to come naturally, rather than being artificial (as if a comedy about an out of control alien life form could ever be artificial!)
And there you have the basis of the plot. Hold on a bit, let me explain some more.
One dark and stormy night (ok it wasn’t stormy, but it was definitely dark) a meteorite lands in the deserts of Arizona. By an unfortunate coincidence, Wayne Green (Sean William Scott) happens to ... ...the time (you'll have to watch the film to get that one explained!), and nearly gets very squished. Luckily for poor Wayne, he manages to get out of the way just in time, unluckily for Wayne his car gets totalled by the rock, which crashes into one of the many caverns littering the area.
Thus the next morning the local member of the United States Geological Survey, recently signed up by Internet and a teacher of Geology at the local college, one ...

...end, but having said that Evolution is in fact much better! The film is set in a fictional Arizona town called Glen Canyon and opens with a meteor crashing towards earth. Advantages: A fairly funny script, easy to enjoy Disadvantages: a few minor flaws but nothing that really stands out
Before the release of Evolution back in 2001 I was a little dubious to say the least. The lack of advertising seemed to suggest to me that it really wasn’t going to be that good. All that seemed to be used was the little yellow smiley with the three eyes and that really worried me. But I went to see it anyway, not really sure why but I did and left the cinema pleasantly surprised. It wasn’t anywhere near as bad as I thought it was going ... ...those towns you see in a lot of American based film. Quite a big place with everything you would ever need. However whilst here a meteor strikes his car sending it flying into the air and leaving him Stranded.
The police take charge of the situation ...

Advantages: I say: 'Julianne Moore' Disadvantages: You've seen this done better elsewhere....
Ooooh, an underachieving movie and it knows it is.
It's by no means bad NOR is it any good BUT I wanted to like it....I was kind of entertained....the occasionally ropey special effects didn't help.
It's not funny enough preferring to go for a few contrived and easy laughs rather than genuine humour (notably physiological and occasionally scatologically stuff that adolescents seem to adore....).
The aliens are by no means as dangerous as they're ... ...At the beginning of the film, a wannabe fireman (Seann William Scott)
is practising scenarios such as rescuing people from burning buildings when suddenly....a flaming meteor whooshes by and crashes.
Harry Block (Orlando Jones) is a teacher in the nearby Glen Canyon Community College who is called out to investigate what this is, who in turn brings out a friend of his, Ira Kane (David Duchovny).
They discover the meteor is not what it seems....there ...

Duchovny’s wit works well with Jones’s black sarcasm, and Sean Scott-Williamson brings up the rear nicely with his slightly slapstick approach and ability to pull faces unseen sinch Jim Carey’s best days. Evolution is proclaimed as a new comedy from the director of Ghostbusters Ivan Reitman. Many critics have compared it to that film and some have been negative in the fact that it's trying to be that film. Well I ask you is any film that's close to Ghostbusters a bad thing ? Hell No! The film starts as a meteor comes crashing to earth in Arizona and startles a wannabe fireman Wayne Green (William Scott). Enter local college professor Ira Kane (Duchovny) ... ...far too long or dragging Evolution is a breath of fresh air. It has a lot of scientific explanation as to what is happening on screen but it's all moved along at a decent pace so you know what's happening plot wise without getting tired. As for the acting, well all the cast seem to be having a good time. Duchovny and Joes play off each other very well. Duchovny is quite dry as is Jones but when it comes to sellnig a physical joke Jones can do it ...

Advantages: It will make you chuckle into your popcorn Disadvantages: Has that annoying bloke from "American Pie" in it
Imagine what would happen if a meteorite carrying alien life crashed into the Arizona desert - now forget the obvious scary sci-fi scenario, because it bears no resemblance to what happens here. There are bucketloads of sight gags and jokes about bodily functions, some pretty good unearthly CG and animatronic special effects (including a creature who resembles Slimer from Ghostbusters) and a cameo role for Dan Akroyd. Thankfully the film owes more to the first than the second Ghostbusters films, ...

Advantages: It's got David Duchovny in it. I laughed once or twice Disadvantages: The script is absolutely appalling, it's nothing new
...left in my pocket.
Evolution is allegedly a comedy, but I failed to spot one joke in the whole film - it just wasn't funny and the film wasn't the X - Files pastiche that I was expecting due to David Duchovny playing the main character Dr. Kane. There are two other lead characters played by Actors who I don't know the names of and frankly cannot be bothered to find out... neither can i remember their characters' names... all that really matters ... ...and Dungeons and dragons. Sadly evolution does not fit into any of these categories, it's a bad film, but not bad enough to be funny. The problem with the jokes isn't that they're bad, it's that there seriously are only about 4 in the whole film and they seem completely sporadic and random. Evolution is a pretty boring film, probably only worth a rental... or even just wait until it comes out on Sky Moviemax/Premier. Shelling out money to see it ...

I saw this movie yesterday to celebrate having done my last A level, along with my best friend.
The basic storyline is that a trainee fireman Wayne (Seann William Scott)discovers an asteroid hitting Earth in Arizona (it nearly hits him!), as a member of the United States Geological Society Harry Block (Orlando Jones) a local college geology teacher is called in to take samples etc and he takes along his friend and fellow science teacher Ira Kaine ... ...they are evolving at an astonishing rate, although they try and keep this discovery to themselves, the US Army is soon in charge with Julianne Moores character in tow (can't remember the name might have be DR. I won't give the ending away.

Advantages: Entertaining and undemanding Disadvantages: bit silly, not as funny as it could have been.
Evolution is in fact a regression, back to the classic b-movie horror film. All the calssic elements are there - things from outer space, people getting eaten, a gian tblob that can only be killed with something that it's very easy to find, unlikely heroes and a bit of romance. The odds are good, that you will cringe at elast as much as you laugh, but there it is.
The thing that grabbed me most about this film may well not have been intentional: ... ...script has got so silly. These moments of self consciousness are pricelss, and I can only wish there had been more of them. the film comes close to being a satire of the monster bmovie, but sadly doesn't go quite far enough.
Much of the humour is angled towards bum jokes and slapstick (at which Julianne Moore is not brilliant - she always seems so perplexed by it.) Some of the gags are really funny, many aren't. It is on the whole an entertaining ...
