Advantages: A fantastic script, brilliantly acted and directed producing one of the best films of 2004 Disadvantages: Can be confusing if dialogue and visual imagery is not followed closely or misunderstood
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of those pictures I would normally try and avoid. The hideous spot trailers promoting the film on television recently, coupled with an equally expansive title reminiscent of the sickly sweet Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, held up immediate warning signs - "you are now entering a chick flick zone, do not step any further beyond this point if you value your credibility!"
What I did not ...

Love Lost? Review ofEternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind DVDby

Advantages: Touching love story with excellent performances from Carrey and Winslet told in a very visual style Disadvantages: Occasionally has scenes that feel unfocused and repetitive
If you're looking for the perfect antidote to formulaic romantic comedies that are so sickly sweet that they leave you feeling physically ill, then "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" could be for you. Written by the man responsible for "Being John Malkovich" and "Adaptation" the film was never going to be a by the numbers romance. In fact, this is the sort of film that will melt your heart whilst simultaneously screwing with your brain - and ...

...loved Adaptation, and I feel Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is even better than that. The philosophical connotations in the script are genuine questions. Are we all on an inevitable course, with no control over our actions? What are we without our memories, even the not so nice ones? Is it better we don't know some things?
Jon Brion is responsible for the ambient music score. Incidentally, the title of the film is a quote from an 18th century ...

Kaufman's Best Review ofEternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind DVDby

Advantages: Different, imaginative, satisfyingly ambiguous, visually inventive. Disadvantages: It's not what the trailer leads you to expect
...have seen the trailer for Eternal Sunshine, and there will not be many regular cinema goers who managed to avoid it, will probably be expecting an upbeat fast snappy funny quirky film. It comes as quite a surprise to find that, though undeniably quirky and with some very funny moments, this is actually quite a dark exploration of a relationship falling apart. Where in some films the central concept of watching someone revisiting their own memories ...

Advantages: well cast, visually astounding, satisfying story Disadvantages: misleading trailer
The reason I went to see this movie was the title. I thought it was quite clever, incredibly pretentious, but clever. And once I caught the trailer and its spectacular weirdness, I was convinced that I absolutely-had-to-see-this-movie-and-noone-was-going-to-stop-me. And I loved it, despite expecting some sort of quirky comedy, and getting instead an incredibly unpredictable and twisted romance.
And, naturally, when I came across articles about ...

Advantages: Kaufman's script, Gondry's direction, Winslet Disadvantages: Minor let-down sub-plots
Charlie Kaufman is a man of mystery. He’s like a more subtle Lynch who ranges from the poignant to the utterly bizarre, with a lot of random tidbits in the middle. “Being John Malkovich” was Kaufman’s first “written by” venture into Hollywood in 1999 where he wowed audiences with his strangely original concepts and peculiar directorial traits. How many other directors pitch a film about someone finding a door-way into John Malkovich’s head…? “Eternal ...

Advantages: Brilliant performances from the entire cast, Carrey and Winslet in particular, original and inventive story, imaginative direction from Michel Gondry. Disadvantages: If you've got a short attention span then you might find a few scenes too slow.
Eternal Sunshine. What a weird but wonderful movie. We have Charlie Kaufman (the writer of such wacky scripts such as “Being john Malkovich” and “Adaptation”) to thank for this original yet slightly crazy movie. Movie wise I am up for absolutely anything, but come on this movie starred my favourite actress Kirsten Dunst, and someone hilarious I adore, Jim Carrey, and then we have a hobbit thrown in for good measure. How could I resist? Prior to seeing ...

...of the unique scenes in Eternal Sunshine are produced using old style camera tricks; the reliance on digital technology is at a total minimum. There is also a strange running order to the film. The film begins with the second meeting of Joel and Clementine, moves through the first meeting, cuts to the end of their time together and then views everything through Joel's memories, before returning to the beginning again and in true Monty Python style ...

Advantages: Clever, original idea, competent performances Disadvantages: A few flaws in the plot, too much focus on not a lot happening
Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are amongst my least favourite actors, but their latest film, “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”, had received such critical acclaim that I was prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt just to see whether the film merited the glowing reviews I had read on the subject. The subject matter, a couple who undergo a procedure to erase each other from their minds after the breakdown of a two year relationship certainly ...

...that the final act for Eternal Sunshine is blinding (I usually use more sophisticated words to describe things but I just can't be bothered today...). The script posses some questions about life and love and doesn't quite resovlve atbthe end. You see the light but you con't quite forget what it took to see that light. The story is helped along by the fantastic editing (asformentioned). Revelations are revealed when the time is right, the story flows ...

...And so you feel that Eternal Sunshine may also play out the same way. So what did I think of the movie?
The film is a love story in reverse. You initially think that the film will pan out the same way as any other movie of this ilk, but after the opening credits on chapter 5 you see that this is a relationship that has finished bitterly and has left its emotional wreckage, in Joel at least, by the wayside.
Carrey in the role of the withdrawn ...

...touched me as much as Eternal Sunshine. I’m sure that more and more people will come to love this film as much as I have. In some ways I find it a little like Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation. That too touched my romantic side! However, there is a little more action in Eternal Sunshine for those who were a little dissatisfied with Lost in Translation for that very reason.
I think the star performer of this film is probably Kate Winslet as the ...

Advantages: High standard of acting all round making it a very moving film. Disadvantages: Takes effort to understand at first.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind sees Charlie Kaufman – the Academy Award nominated screenwriter of such films as Being John Malkovich and Adaptation - return with this romantic comedy in what is quite likely his most confusing script to date. However, this is anything but your average rom-com.
Of course, it has some of the obvious, unavoidable, Richard Curtis-esque features, such as the mixture of love and heartbreak supplied by a troubled ...

Have you ever wished you could wipe the memories of a certain person from your mind? It's an intriguing thought, and the basis of this brilliantly inventive romantic-comedy-drama, one of the best films of 2004.
Shy Joel (Jim Carrey) is upset when he discovers that his ex-girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) has undergone a procedure at the futuristic organisation Lacuna Inc to have all her memories of him wiped. Left with memories of their short, ...
