...approach to the subject matter, End of Days take a more frontal assault approach.
Somewhere in the back streets of New York Gabriel Byrne is enjoying a meal in a cafe; as he enters the rest room he is assaulted and possessed by an invisible creature (that just happens to be Satan). Immediately we see this character have a profound effect on those around him as his sexual presence becomes very evident. (Although humans celebrate this as being a new millennium, the calendars were changed many years ago to align the human calendar with celestial events).
Gabriel Byrne begins to scour New York looking for a pre-ordained woman (who was born on a pre ordained day and year) to impregnate. As he 'imagines' sexual encounters he sends ...

...that mumbo-jumbo about the apoc...apoco...apololy...the end of the world occuring just because the calendar was suddenly about to sprout three zeros. As it goes the powers that be in Hollywood didn't make too much of baboon's arse about it and this turned out to be, if not a masterpiece, then something worth buying popcorn for.

The ending is of course in true Hollywood style and if you're ...

Advantages: decetn effects extras, good presentation, entertaining Disadvantages: R2 misses extras, could have been better
End of Days was heralded as the return of Arnie to the big screen after a a few years absence. Unfortunately films like The Matrix had been released and the bar for action movies had been raised from the days when all you needed were some over the top bad guys and some heavy firepower and one-liners.
That's not to say that this is a bad movie. Far from it, it sets out it's stall and does exactly what it says on the tin but you can't help but feel ... ...worry the un-trained eye.
End of Days is an action film and the Dolby Digital 5.1 sound fits into your expectations. There is a good level of surround action throughout with some bass shaking moments. The music is mixed well into the fold and dialogue is clear.
Flick through the simple but effective animated menus and you're greeted with a reasonable set of extras.
Director Peter Hyams contributes an audio commentary to the film and at times it's ...

...the film, don't worry.
End Of Days is a film which was released in late 1999 to coincide with the beginning of the new millenium, as this is what the story revolves around. You see, the world is about to end at the stroke of midnight, Dec 31, 1999. And Auld Nick's gong to take over. Yes ladies and gents, it's the Devil against the rest, Good v Evil. And it makes for a pretty good film.
The story goes something like this: the bible got it wrong. ... ...marking the apocalypse (or the End Of Days, hence the title). But things don't go according to plan, and Satan's plans are scuppered by a burnt-out ex-cop turned security guard, by the name of Jericho, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. He stumbles across this dastardly plan, and does his best to prevent it, eventually having to renew his lost faith in God to defeat the ultimate enemy. It's a good story, and it's quite well thought out. There are a ...

Advantages: Loaded with Features Disadvantages: Hard job rooting for the Good Guy
End of Days begins in 1979, where a girl is being born in New York City. This girl will be the one Satan attempts to impregnate at the turn of the century. Yeah, it's not just an apocalypse movie, it's a Y2K movie - great. Fast forward to 1999, with the girl's parents killed off and she, now 20, is experiencing "hallucinations" and nightmares. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the role of Jericho Cane, a bodyguard who is hired to protect the man whose ... ...science fiction elements to it, End of Days comes off as an off-the-wall sci-fi flick with plenty of action. Many of the events and elements of the film are just plain stupid and poorly presented (the guy in the subway was overdone, don't you agree?). The film is completely shallow, with absolutely nothing to analyze other than the obvious things that have been touched upon countless times before (i.e., have faith, evil begets evil, blah blah blah). ...

...not for the faint hearted. End of Days is a movie where Arnold Schwarzenegger playing Jericho Cane has to prevent the devil from getting his bride and bringing the world as we know it to an end. It's age old story of good fighting evil, but this time its the opposite ends of the spectrum - God against the Devil.

The film appeared quite dark but turning the lights down didn't quite do it for me this time.I couldn't get scared by a Devil who pees petrol and can be knocked back by a few extra big bullets. What (probably in 1999) started out as a decent enough plot became very predictable and somewhat rushed. This is a great film. It is a different sort of Arnie movie in that he doesn't rely on huge guns all the time. This fact makes for interesting viewing.
The film follows Jericho(Schwarzenegger) a former New York cop. He is now a security agent that is assigned to protect Garbiel Byrne. It soon becomes apparent that it Byrne isn't a businessman but the Devil. He has come to earth to claim his bride Christine (Robin Tunney) so that he can unleash his ... ...all and protects Christine in the fight of his life.
The acting is superb from all the cast in this film. Christine Tunney is great as the "chosen one" as she really makes you believe she doesn't have a clue what is going on. Arnold too does a good job and he even gets beaten up by an old lady in this film and he crys too - a whole new side to Arnie. Gabriel Byrne is the best actor in this film and he manages to give heartless glances or stares ...

Anyway, back to the point: this is a pretty good film; if you see it you should probably buy it. The acting's good and the soundtrack's alright (strange how Satanism is always associated with Goth rock). Look out for the devil's wonderful sense of humour ("Nice Shirt, kid"). ...

Advantages: Byrne, Schwarzenegger Disadvantages: Loads of influeneces
It's the dog end of the Millennium and it's a very prophetic time as the devil rides out. The film kicks off with an ominous sign in the sky and scenes reminiscent of The Omen. The Pope tells the bringer of bad news that they cannot kill the girl (whoever she is) and minutes later we see a strange ceremony where a new born girl has rattlesnake blood wiped on its mouth.
Suddenly, it's 20 years later, three days from the end of the Millennium, and ... ...child and bring on the end of days, the coming of a slightly different regime from the previous couple of thousand years. Byrne looks like he had a wonderful time making this film and revels in his role as the Dark Angel, a cynical, swaggering, pretty nasty egg all round. It's very serious and earnest stuff for the most part but Byrne plays it with a twinkle and black humour that one would struggle not to find funny.
There's a lot of echoes of The ...

Advantages: I like good vs evil! Disadvantages: Some don't
I thoroughly enjoyed this film! It contains your ever-popular fight between good and evil, but in its traditional, basic form of God against the Devil. Addressed in much the same way as in the Exorcist (not that I'm comparing the two films, they both include priests and Beelzebub in one shape or another, that’s all!). Arnie or Jericho Cane, the ex-cop about to kill himself, gets involved with the devil character by saving his life! He spends ... ...with the chosen one, and, might I add, no romantic involvement ensues between Arnie and she, thank goodness! The body being used by the devil in this film happens to be the priest from Stigmata, a very good actor, unfortunately I can’t name him! Needless to say good wins, following an almighty millennium eve struggle. Good acting even from Arnie, some blood and guts, and a happy ending! Perhaps I’m too easily pleased! ...

...vodka and sucking on the end of his gun, never getting round to pulling the trigger. It’s the end of the century in a couple of days, something that has got the Pope pretty agitated - for he knows that Satan himself is somewhere at large in the world, back to claim the woman ‘chosen’ for him 20 years earlier. Rather conveniently, Satan has taken the form of a man, whom Jericho is in charge of protecting. But when a tongue-less priest ... ...does cry, once! End Of Days is a fun, all-out action movie with tons of action, and a fairly good, yet very complicated plot. If you like arnie's style, this is no different, but Terminator 2 is better, with a similar plot. Still a good watch though! ...

...this day has come in End of Days…
We watched this film the other night, after we gave up on The Beach, and I was not too impressed, to be honest. Because of its different ‘slant’ I had expected something better. Instead, we got Arnie action misplaced within the scripts of a horror movie. Arnie was badly miss-cast here and his films are just getting steadily worse over the years.
Being a fan of horror, I have seen this plot unfold ... ...books. So there was nothing new here for me at all. It has been done so often before, and there have been much better interpretations of the story of the coming of the devil.
So... the plot…
