In Tim Burton's EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, a suburban fairy tale with incredibly imaginative sets, an Avon lady, Peg Boggs (Dianne Wiest), discovers the half-finished experiment--a...
more...man/monster named Edward (Johnny Depp)--of a mad scientist (played magically by Vincent Price) living in the neighborhood's old abandoned castle. The scientist died before replacing the shy man's large shears with real hands. When Peg attempts to bring Edward into her suburban world, to live among her skeptical family (husband Alan Arkin and daughter Winona Ryder) and gossipy neighbors, his hands--dangerous yet capable of creating things of great beauty--make for some awkward, funny, and poignant situations: Edward as a topiary gardener, Edward as a cutting-edge hair stylist. EDWARD SCISSORHANDS is a story about tolerance, difference, and creativity as much as it is a story of a young man's coming of age (the young man in question is, of course, a monster). In the ironically surreal world of Edward's suburban community, he must try to find his place in it, and in the world at large.

HIS SCARS RUN DEEP.
Review of Edward Scissorhands (DVD) by Morning_Becomes_Electra

Advantages: A magical film with a wonderful story.
Disadvantages: None.

...dilapidated state, depressing and gloomy. Edward Scissorhands is a strange invention, born of an elderly inventor who died before he had a chance to complete him. Edward has no social skills due to his isolation; he is painfully shy and barely utters a word, save for small utterances. He is a gentle soul under a definite handicap. In place of hands he has a mass of varying size scissors. The inventor, (Vincent Price) had plans to give him hands to ... Read review

An Extraordinary Story Of An Ordinary Gentleman
Review of Edward Scissorhands (DVD) by Great_reviewer07

Advantages: Excellent storyline, superb acting
Disadvantages: There aren't any at all

Edward (Johnny Depp) isn’t your usual man, not only has he been invented by a renowned inventor who has since died but because of the premature death of his inventor Edward wasn’t finished. He has been left with scissors for hands and after his inventor and only friend passed away Edward has been living in a creepy looking mansion all by himself. That’s until local Avon representative Peg Boggs (Dianne Wiest) makes her way into the mansion for ... Read review

Oh, Edward, what big scissors you have
Review of Edward Scissorhands (DVD) by SarahSkas

Advantages: The ultimate cult-classic
Disadvantages: The story is too daft and far fetched for some people

Edward Scissorhands is the ultimate cult-classic DVD must-have. Released way back in 1990 the film looks a little dated, though for me this adds nostalgia and fondness to the whole film experience. I first saw this film more than a decade ago and have watched it over and over again on my Special Edition DVD. As with all good films it has never lost its charm or magic and is still as appealing to me today as it ever was. The film is directed ... Read review

Adventure in a pastel paradise
Review of Edward Scissorhands (DVD) by kiss_me2070

Advantages: Great story-line, great film shots, Brill actors
Disadvantages: Wish the film lasted longer!

Edward Scissorhands reminds me of when I was a child. I used to watch it every year at Christmas and it was one of my favourite films. ***ABOUT THE DIRECTOR**** Tim Burton is an Academy Award and Golden Globe nominated American film director, writer and designer notable for the quirky and often dark gothic atmosphere in his high profile films. Burton is the director of two successful Batman films (Batman, Batman Returns) and has collaborated ... Read review

Disadvantages: I genuinely can't think of any

...let him off. However, Edward Scissorhands must be his finest moment. I must admit I've only just got round to watching it, despite the fact it was made 16 years ago - it was definitely worth the wait. Johnny Depp looks about twelve playing the Edward in question; a monster created by a mad professor (Vincent Price) in a spooky castle at the top of a hill. Sadly, the professor died just before he fitted Edward with his human hands, leaving him with ... Read review

...guest. As it happens, Edward is a creation of the elderly inventor who owned the mansion on the hill, and before he had a chance to give Edward prosthetic hands, he died. But Edward's flare for inventive haircuts and gardening make him the perfect houseguest and he finds himself in demand by the local housewives. However, a brush with the law, and a proclaimation of love for Pegs daughter Kim results in the townsfolk turning on him, and he soon finds ... Read review

...success with Batman, Burton co-wrote Edward Scissorhands with Caroline Thompson. This was to be the beginning of his collaborations with Johnny Depp. ***Plot Summary*** A young man created and given long sheer-like scissors for hands by his inventor father struggles to come to terms with life after his father's death, living alone in the dark and dilapidated castle he shared with his father - his only companion. ...film about a creation called Edward that was never finished by his creator. The part of Edward that was never finished was his hands, so instead of Edward having normal hands with fingers, Edward has scissors in their place. Edward lives alone in the same gothic castle that he was created in, and hasn’t been outside the gates of the castle at all. However one day Edward is surprised to find that the ‘Avon Lady’ (Peg Boggs) turns up at his castle trying ... Read review

scissors paper stone
Review of Edward Scissorhands (DVD) by dadmancat

Advantages: Great tale, splendid direction, nice transfer
Disadvantages: really being picky here - a pro-logic surround mix

...pleasure to watch his movies. Edward Scissorhands is one of his finest, a slight tale which retreads the Beauty and the Beast formula, but with magnificent wit and imagination. Edward is created by an old inventor, living a solitary life in a typically gothic Burton castle. The inventor dies before completing Edward and he is left with scissors for hands. How this film ever got funding with a premise like that is quite astounding, but when the ... Read review

Unfortunately, one day 'he didn't wake up' and Edward was left incomplete, his hands were not finished, and were nothing but sharp scissor blades. Enter the Avon Lady. Tim Burton at His Finest
Review of Edward Scissorhands (DVD) by Vistaway

Advantages: Gorgeous visuals, solid acting, good story, Elfman soundtrack
Disadvantages: Not on DVD yet

...If you have not seen Edward Scissorhands, then you are missing the best example of his work. Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder are perfect in their roles, and help drive the emotion that runs through the movie. The visuals are Burton at his best - dark, imaginative, and twisted. I feel the movie combines Burton's typical style with the black humour of films like Pleasantville and Truman Show. This is the sort of movie that you would be best to buy on DVD, ... Read review

Review of Edward Scissorhands (DVD) by Arbrette

Advantages: Simple language, slow pace, pretty coloured scenery!
Disadvantages: Lack of strong storyline, minimal characterisation.

...the American Avon Lady discovered Edward and rescued him from what had been his solitary existence as the creation of a dead inventor. She cheesily accepted his hands as being long noisy pieces of stiff tinfoil – at least, that is what they sounded like! She took him home and again, the caricature of the fussy female with a feather brain appears s she tried to treat him as a normal person. My oh my, she actually tried makeup on him … several ... ...man who died to leave Edward unfinished, and with scissors for hands. Ever since Edward has lived alone in the castle on top of the hill where at the bottom lies a freakishly 'normal' community. All the houses are eerily aligned and painted bright colours to emphasise the cheerfulness of the community, it's a picturesque perfect world that seems odder than the gothic clouded castle on the other end of town. Then one mother and housewife from that ... Read review
