...years in the making, but Dungeons and Dragons the movie has finally made it to the big-screen. Big named actors, big money special effects, does the gamble pay off? Will the heroes save the land? Will good triumph over evil once again? Will SOMEONE please tell me how a movie studio can transform a good idea into a really BAD movie??? An introduction to the film sets the scene, and within minutes you know that Profion (Jeremy Irons) is the archmage ... ...stands for everything he is against – making everyone equal and generally being nice to each other. She doesn’t want to give the grown ups her golden sceptre. So Profion urges the Council of Mages to gang up on the empress, and now it’s clear that the empire is in deep doodoo. Damodar (Bruce Payne) is urged to help when Profion inserts what seem to be lugworms into his head. That is unless a couple of young thieves Ridley and Snails ...

Advantages: Great Special effects Disadvantages: Woeful acting, poor plot
I really wanted to see Dungeons and Dragons ever since I saw the trailer. Filled with massive special effects, sword fights, sorcery and dragon or two it definitely looked a cracking film. This genre of film is right up my street so I couldn’t wait, however, I should have remembered that the trailers always look good and this film really underlined how a trailer can make a poor film look brilliant.
And what a dire film it is for all the media ... ...reflection on the game of Dungeons and Dragons where the story line is always fluctuating and never seems set in its ways but if so you can’t achieve this on screen without making your audience feel either lost or unhappy with the lack of consistency.
Worse than the story line, I feel, was the acting and use of characters. None of the actors imposed themselves on the film what so ever not even the well-known stars such as Jeremy Irons and ...

I'll apologise in advance, but the best thing about watching this movie was so I could mentally poke fun at all the underground dwelling trenchcoated goth-types who showed up to see it. I'm sorry. Does that make me a bad person? I don't know, but whoever made this gigantic turkey is a very, very bad person, and should still be beating themselves with birch branches until... ...games of them all is Dungeons and Dragons.
As the years progressed and the game improved it became known as Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (AD&D); with several revisions the rules became better and began to give the player a great feel for role-playing. With the popularity of the system it became inevitable that there would be computer games. From early games like ‘Azure Bonds’ to the current games like ‘Baldur’s Gate’ ... ...was very good and added great value to the whole role-playing ethos. As more and more people began to play these games and AD&D entered the main stream it became obvious that a film based on the role-playing system would be made.

Advantages: Good special effects, nowt else Disadvantages: The film
I went to see this film with my little bro, and I'm not really sure what I expected. What I didn't expect, however, was to see extremeley talented actors in this dreadful movie. Jeremy Irons, Marlon Wayons, both great talents cruelly wasted, and why Thora Birch chose this perfect example of how not to make a film as her follow up to the masterpiece that is "American Beauty" is a mystery.
The film, set in a medieval fantasy land, has no discernable ... ...young man searching for some kind of rod? (maybe), and a communist Empress, who believes all people should be equal. There is a wise cracking side kick (Marlon Wayons), who dies-how original. The rest of the characters have no reason for being there, at least none that I could figure out.
Yes, the special effects are very good, especially the scene where the dragons fight, and no doubt this film is aimed at a young audience. But young children will ...

~Background~
Dungeons and dragons is a paper and dice RPG game that has stretched over 3 decades. Often seen as a 'geek' thing, due to often referenced in the media, it is played by people you wouldn't think geekish at all, for example, the actor, Vin Diesel! Many writers have drawn best selling novels from playing the game, most prominently RL Salvadore. The game has such a big cult following, references can still be found in modern PC RPG games. ... ...of the game, it was only a matter of time that the sheer imagination would leap out of the writings of fans and players into the big screen.

Advantages: Great special effects, especially the dragon battle. Disadvantages: Every other aspect of the film.
What an appauling effort. I have never seen a film fail on almost every point. Granted, the special effects are great and the dragon battle is worthy of watching. But I went into the film with high expectations ( because the old cartoon series was one of my favourite programmes when I was little) and was not so much disappointed as mortified. Trust me if you are thinking of going to see this film then don't bother.
The story is not very well explained ... ...to find a sceptre that can control a certain type of dragon. Two thieves somewhat stumble into this plot and accompany a young female magician in this dangerous quest that they have no concept of. This is echoed when a barbarian dwarf also joins the crew. though it is very difficult to understand how he got involved as the script gives the poor chap nothing to do for almost the entire film.
Then up steps Jeremy Irons, perhaps he can save this dire ...

After catching the preview over a dozen times "and every time being more enthusiastic to walk 25 miles to see it!). Well eventually, after another week and an half, I was offered a trip by car to our local UCI cinema for the extortionate £5,10 a ticket, and guess what film we chose...

...is there to watch but Dungeons & Dragons. From my childhood I always remembered coming home from school flicking on the TV and watching the cartoon version. However the film is in most part completely different. It’s a typical fairy tale of a thief that has to go out of his way for the better good to save the pathetic and ugly Empress, whilst falling in love with a young inexperienced Mage followed by a useless sidekick called Snails. If you ... ...too sophisticated for this film. Dungeons & Dragons has some comical aspects, some fantasy aspect and all the ingredients for a good film but it lacks essential transitional scene change and build up. The acting is reasonable, nothing special as the audience is not there to be mentally gratified but to watch something that is light and ...

Advantages: good effects, interesting story. Richard O Brian and Marlon Wayans Disadvantages: if you don’t enjoy fantasy films you probably won’t like this
...have got to say that Dungeons and Dragons is very well made, has a good storyline and the special effects are brilliant. I didn’t really know what to expect before seeing this film, I guess it’s like an adult version of Neverending Story.
I have to say that there are a great deal more dungeons than there are dragons. The dragon fighting scene at the end is good though. The story is about a dragon sword thingy that they have to find for ... ...thieves and a mage. There is a ginger haired bloke who sort of follows them but he doesn’t really say a lot or have much to do in the film. A surprise appearance was made by Richard O Brian, who was great. He had that camp humour as he normally does. The mage didn’t do many spells either, I thought that they were supposed to be doing fireballs/lightening etc. but she was just learning!! Not like playing the game on my old Spectrum anyway!

Advantages: Good for kids Disadvantages: obvious, silly and 2d.
...teens or older, but the Dungeons and Dragons film has been pitched at children , and judging by the reactions of youngsters in the cinema when I went, they like it a lot.
I have been playing AD&D for some time, but held out few hopes that the film would be aimed at an adult audience. The plot is obvious, the characters 2d at best, the dialogue minimal, and the story line underdeveloped. (Two thieves, a trainee mage, a totally pointless dwarf and ... ...to start a dragon war to save an empire.)
The good points - Richard O'Brian, who is fab in everything. Tom Baker making a brief appearance as an elf. The effects, which weren't bad, and the moments of humour which I enjoyed no end.
It wants to be Star Wars oh so much, and for anyone familiar with AD&D you can spend a lot of the film playing spot the mechanics, which perhaps isn't ideal.
If you have a small child, take them to see this film, because ...

Advantages: hmm not many Disadvantages: basicly a poor film
Based on the popular fantasy game of the same name, "Dungeons and Dragons" is reputedly a labour of love for director Courtney Solomon, taking some nine years to reach the screen. The film is set in the mythical fantasy land of Izmer. Empress Savina (played by Thora Birch) is pitted against evil wizard Profion (Jeremy Irons) in a struggle for control of her kingdom. A band of low-lives find themselves thrust into a series of magical adventures in ... ...parties. The director has an opportunity to present a fantasy quest in the traditional mould; he mostly fails to do so. The various magical episodes - as the heroes race to recover the precious Rod of Sarville - are both clichéd and dull. The moral message, that everybody is equal, is driven home with a lamentable lack of subtlety. Unfortunately, the performances are little better. Thora Birch’s character is a dead ringer for "Star Wars: Episode ...

Advantages: Sword fights was good and good fight between the dragons. Disadvantages: Not a very good plot, just as the title says, dungeons and dragons.
...game rather than really about dungeons and dragons. Anyway, back to film...
Overall i thought it wasn't a bad film, the plot wasn't actually a good one in the end, and i found it amusing in many areas. Like i said earlier, there wasn't a story that this film could've been based upon, and so the producers must've have created the plot to go with the title, there were dragons, and also a bit of dungeons involved. I was actually quite surprised by ... ...might've included more fights between mages than people. But i was wrong, they actually kept the use of magic and spells to a minimum and was more of an adventure than fantasy. The fact that it had included many of the races of creatures in many fantasy books like elves, dwarves, goblins etc... made it look like it was in a fantasy world. One other thing, if you'd sit and think about it, in many books that i have read, thieves tend to be different ...

Advantages: CGI. Quite good. Sort of. Disadvantages: All of it. Oh. My. God.
Oh deary me, what an absolutely dreadful offering. This really is, without any shadow of a doubt, the worse fantasy film I have ever had the displeasure to grace with my presence. I cannot state it any more strongly than that, much as I would like to.
It starts as it means to go on - with an incredibly overacting (and badly acting) Jeremy Irons - my word, that man does go all out when he means to irritate. He is shortly followed by Thora Birch (WhatEVER ... ...(yes, well, enough said there) and Marlon Wayans (does he ever use a different character? i think not)
The plot is non-existant. The acting is incredibly pointless and dire. The screenplay might just as well not exist - in fact, the actors could just stand there and let the CG dragons weave amongst them - it would be about as interesting as this film.
I regret the money I spent seeing this film. I was duped into it by the trailer, which has the ...
