Based on the old play by Hamilton Deane and John Balderston, with Frank Langella repeating his Broadway success in the title role, this underrated and somewhat streamlined version of the classic story is lush, atmospheric and never dull. Count D (Langella with sleepy eyes and dialogue delivery) arrives at Edwardian England in the storm and soon turns his eyes to the lovely and spirited heroine Lucy (Kate Nelligan) and her pretty, fragile friend Mina (Jan Francis). With Laurence Olivier as the role of gentlemanly Van Helsing (he hated the vampire films, by the way ) this is a bit rough around the edges, but still a quality film. ...
