Advantages: Magnificent Doctor Who of the old school Disadvantages: A couple of duff lines, cockney vampires
I know we Doctor Who fans can often be a tiresome bunch, claiming that our favourite show invented just about every entertainment innovation of the late twentieth century. Sometimes we're only kidding (the Internet was probably not inspired by Ian Stuart Black's Terminatoresque serial The War Machines, despite its vision of a future full of computers sharing knowledge via the phone network). Sometimes we're speculating (Ridley Scott might have watched ... ...Vampire Slayer, is a self-confessed Doctor Who fan. This is a review of the Doctor Who serial which can be most clearly identified as Buffy's direct ancestor. Why? Er... because it's got vampires in it, of course. The Curse of Fenric Sylvester McCoy's Doctor lands the TARDIS (his multi-dimensional craft disguised as a police telephone box) in a British naval camp during the Second World War. The camp houses a crippled scientist whose [fictional] ...

Advantages: Packed full of Special Features. Good quality DVD. Disadvantages: Some of the documentaries are a little too long.
...Who) was the last television Doctor who played the Doctor from 1987 to 1993. My copy of The Curse of Fenric came from www.play.com and cost £14.99 (the RRP is £19.99).
Fenric is one of those stories that I really took to at the time and I was pleased when I heard it was going to be released on DVD ~ especially as it was going to be a two disc set with a second version of the story re-made as a feature length story. Ok…you know the drill! Here comes ... ...It centres around the seventh Doctor and his companion Ace (played by Sophie Aldred) when they land the TARDIS at a secret naval base in North Yorkshire. The time period is the Second World War, but this really only seems to be secondary to the history of the characters and the mysteries that are coming from the sea. There’s a lot going on in this story ~ commandos, spies, vampires, Viking legends and a bit about Ace’s origins. This story, unlike ...

Advantages: Story, Ace maturity, a new darker Doctor, Nicholas Parsons Disadvantages: Absolutely nothing. Superb Science Fiction.
...of the finest, and scariest Doctor Who stories ever. With television this good, it was ludicrous that the show was cancelled for so long. Definitely the highlight of the last season and real powerful stuff.
The Tardis lands in Wartime Britain in a secret Military base, where a secret computer is trying to decode a viking mystery. Who are the Wolves of Fenric and what is the Centuries old curse that threatens mankind's future?
Meanwhile Russian ... ...humanity?
Why does the Doctor know so much about Fenric, it is as if they have met before. Is all this just another one of the Doctor's games toying with mankind, one he is in danger of losing?
Why is a more grown up Ace worried about a newborn baby called Audrey and why is she so keen to ensure she escapes with her mother?
Is the Ancient One evil, or a 'pawn' in Fenric's game?
The extras are something else, on two discs.
Cast commentary, music ...

Advantages: A thrilling and captivating story with lots of characters Disadvantages: Once you watch the special edition, you won't want to see the original 4 episodes again.
...penultimate story from the classic Doctor Who series is full of ideas. When I first watched this on video, some of the storyline was hard to understand. Now I have it on DVD, you have the extended edition which helps events gel together more smoothly. I enjoy watching this frequently because every time I watch it, I learn something new about the storyline.
It's delivered by some excellent acting. Each character displays their own emotions with realism ... ...they rise from the sea). It's an atmospheric thriller from start to finish.
The extra features go a long way to showing that the production and make-up artists still put a lot of effort into Doctor Who, even in it's last years. It's certainly one of the stronger McCoy serials ...
