Advantages: A fast moving Doctor Who jaunt Disadvantages: A bit dated
In Doctor Who standards Earthshock certainly was a shock. Some state that Earthshock is horrifically flawed, however to a Doctor Who newcomer Earthshock is a fantastic entry level story. From Earthshock onwards nothing should come as a surprise.
The Doctor (Peter Davison) arrives on Earth sometime in the future with his three faithful companions Adric, Nyssa and Tegan. Some serious tension is present in the Tardis. Adric has had a falling out with ... ...Doctor if he can be returned to his own place and time in the universe. After some debate the Doctor agrees, but insists that he first investigates why they have arrived on Earth. The Tardis picked up a signal coming from deep underground the Earths surface. On the surface of the planet there is also some considerable tension, a group of scientists looking at rock under the Earth's surface have disappeared. Only one member of the team had survived ...

Advantages: Superb story with a bit of a twist Disadvantages: Looks a bit dated now. But then, don't all 80s shows?
...that they just do. Well, Doctor Who is a childhood memory for me, the show having been cancelled in 1989 when I was a young lad of 14. Of course by that time it had all got a bit silly, and to be honest it was earlier Doctor Who stories that I remembered with great fondness. The very first Doctor Who story I can (only just) remember was Destiny Of The Daleks, which first aired 24 years ago this very month - I was 4! I grew up with Tom Baker, then ... ...me to my all-time favourite Doctor Who monsters, and
(c) It scared me absolutely sh****ss.
Earthshock - Peter Davison meets the Cybermen.
A Wee Bit Of Background:
---
Just to elucidate a wee bit further on the above before I really get into the review. As a kid (and now an adult) with a very over-active imagination, I was a huge fan of Doctor Who (and Blakes’ 7 and Star Trek - any sci-fi really) as a nipper. Earthshock, however, has always stood ...

Advantages: engaging and action packed Disadvantages: stands up poorly to repeated viewings
...is a story memorable to Doctor Who fans for being the one that killed off Adric, and how they will cheer at that moment. But there’s a lot more to recommend this story than the death of a particularly annoying companion. Perhaps the most obvious is the return of one of the Doctor's most famous enemies after an absence of seven years. Redesigned, stream-lined and shinier than ever, the Cybermen of the eighties were a triumph for silver paint and moon ... ...to a freighter with the Doctor and his companions to fight off the Cybermen there who are trying to crash the freighter in Earth. But analyse the story too closely and you’ll quickly seen it makes no sense whatsoever (the Cyberman army is on the freighter…and they want to crash it into Earth…yes, good plan…) and even the internal continuity of the story is ruptured, never mind the last two decades of the series. Luckily, Earthshock is a triumph of ...

Advantages: Adric dies Disadvantages: Eric Saward doesn't
...builds tension nicely as the Doctor and companions Nyssa, Tegan and Adric arrive amidst a military expedition into caves on Earth. The army are trying to recover a team of archeologists who have seemingly vanished while exploring a new system of caverns. Naturally the army encounter the same malevolent forces beneath the surface, just in time for the crew of the TARDIS to arrive and cop the blame...naturally.
The Doctor attempts to explain his, ... ...of all the times the Doctor sits down.
The isolated music score IS welcome, as are the gallerys and trivia tidbits. The commentary is again short of the mark when it comes to engaging. The TARDIS crew all appear here, yes, that means Matthew Waterhouse too. There is a 10 minute 'Did You See' feature on Who which is great nostalgic fun...more so than the story. An Easter Egg - find it yourself, and a claymation piece of absurdity labelled 'Episode ...
