Honey Rider emerges from the water...

Advantages: A classic movie with loads of interesting extras
Disadvantages: Not in stereo

Dr No, the movie that launched James Bond onto the big screen and the rest is history. Filmed back in 1962, it is incredible that this film still packs the punch it does today. By the time Dr No was going to be made into a film, Ian Fleming's novels had sold millions of copies. There was a lot of pressure on the film makers to do things well, and more importantly to choose an actor capable of being James Bond. There were many actors considered, ...
...the time. They of course chose Sean Connery. He was one of the principle people concerned with making James Bond the character so many men would love to be today and set the standard for the actors that followed him. Dr No was made on a budget of $900,000 - a very small budget even back in 1962. Evidence can be seen of this at times with the back projection in some of the car scenes. However the film went on to create a global wave of Bond mania ...

My name's Bond ... You know the rest

Advantages: great extras and the classic Bond appearance by Connery
Disadvantages: mono soundtrack - no good for my Dolby Digital speaker system!

The Bond film that started it all ... Doctor No. Made in 1962, Sean Connery makes his introduction as, many fans believe, the greatest of all Bonds. However, this film is probably best remembered for Ursula Andress’ emergence from the sea later in the film. This film also, along with the latest film, The World is Not Enough, marks the beginning of the MGM releases on DVD of remastered feature-packed editions of the entire 007 catalogue. So ...
...Not quite, but it’s a damn good start! Open the box of this first Bond film and you are greeted by the sumptuous collectors’ 8-page booklet. Unlike most DVD booklets this one isn’t full of advertising for other releases, but is a veritable mine of information on the Dr No film, including why they chose Connery for the part rather than a suave refined man like Moore. For instance, did you know the director, Terence Young made Bond ...

Playboys, babes and baddies. What more do you want

Advantages: Loads of great extras
Disadvantages: Some dubious ones, mono soundtrack

Before the film Dr No, the character James Bond was little more than a fictional super spy known only to a few who had an interest in a series of novels by Ian Fleming. Thanks to a relatively unknown Scottish actor going by the name of Sean Connery a new kind of superhero was born. Not the typical loudly dressed tight wearing superhero that seeming to be saturating the 60's TV network. This was a more suave, debonair tuxedo playboy that we all at ...
...anyway!) For out of no-where this new classy hero burst onto cinema screens and wowed audiences internationally giving a slight insight into what was to become an established movie franchise. So we come to Dr No, already laying the foundations for future catchphrases and a myriad of raised eyebrows the world over. Probably the most famous scene in this movie involves the gorgeous Ursula Andress emerging from the sea in THAT bikini (which recently ...

Bond James Bond

Advantages: first ever bond
Disadvantages: Dr Evil comparisons

Bond.. James Bond It's probably the most famous introduction in the world and is the first line said by Sean Connery at the start of the film, it sets the tone for the rest of the film and for the 18 that have followed. Although Dr No is the first official bond film it wasn't the first attempt to turn one of the Ian Fleming novels into film, this had been done a few years earlier for an American TV movie which sank without trace, there was also a ...
...No ‘casino Royal’ which starred David Niven and Peter Sellers amongst many. Like many popular books there was a lot of interest in developing the James bond character into films but nobody quite knew how they were going to do it. The character in the books is very dark and brooding and was not thought to be very cinema friendly but Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman persuaded the studio to give them the money to make the first bond book ...

Dr NO

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

Out of five stars, Dr. No gets four. A great Bond film that probably wouldn't have stood alone, but was a great introduction for the subsequents. It introduces James Bond to the big screen - a secret agent so refined in marksmanship, bravery, duty, seduction, and especially gentlemanlike conduct. The scene in Dr. No's dining room encompasses the better qualities of Bond - he civilly eats a meal with the title villain while conversing about world ...
...At a point where Bond could escape by simply breaking a particularly appealing bottle of wine, he chooses to save the wine rather than himself. The exotic locales, women, and characters only add to the small fire that would soon blaze up into a billion-dollar francise. Note: also contains the first underground lair used by a Bond villain. There is also some very interesting features on this disc and should be in every James Bond fan collection ...

Unlike the newer Bond films, 007 doesn't use any of the high tech gadgets his has come to rely on today, instead he is much more violent and faithful to Ian Fleming's original creation. It is a little slow in places, but the ...

...and it gets dubbed "must-have-seminal-classic-of-its-genre". Dr. No is no different - of course, but it doesn't require a DVD release to get called seminal, and it is a very fine movie too. Connery looks very natural as a secret agent - which probably means he would make a terrible real one - sticking out a mile, but for the purposes of Bond, he is pretty much perfect. Slick, classy, and fabulously well shot (trying to avoid mentioning Ursula Andress, ...

Dr No

Advantages: Great Storyline, Great Musical Score, Fantastic Actors, Great Special Effects
Disadvantages: Being an older film, it hasn't got the best picture quality

Dr No is the first film in the massive James Bond series. It stars Sean Connery as the famous British agent, starring alongside Ursula Andress. When in Jamacia investigating various mishaps, Bond stumbles upon a plot to take over the world spearheaded by the manical Doctor Julious No. His investigations into this plot takes him to Crab Key Island, where he finds Doctor No's secret base and attempts to stop the threat once and for all... Dr No also ...
...next few movies of the series. SPECTRE is an enjoyable prospect alone, as the newer Bond films have no sense of continuity, whilst the originals felt more like a series that continued from the preceding film. The movie is very enjoyable, and showcases what a great actor Sean Connery is. The fear he shows through his face in the tarantula scene and the proffesionalism he gives Bond makes him one of the better actors to play the famous agent. His ...

Advantages: classic film
Disadvantages: Looks a little dated

The very first James Bond film is still one of the best films around. Aside from the film itself, it's easy to see why they called this disc the special edition. It's packed full of stuff that any Bond fan would die to get his hands on. The interviews with cast and crew are particularly interesting to watch as they shed light on some of the in jokes in the film that you would otherwise not notice. The documentary about the director Terence Young ...

Bond is Best

Advantages: Great DVD
Disadvantages: none

The first Bond film in the officially recognised series was originally intended to be more of a B-movie, but the winning formula of spies, girls and guns ensured its success and laid the path for the eighteen films that have followed since. Dr No is closer to the original Ian Fleming novel than a lot of the other movies, and there are fewer action scenes and cheesy quips than we`re used to from the later instalments. However, this should not deter ...
