Advantages: Famke, good special effects, great pacey movie

Starring the very delicious Famke Janssen (Xenia of Goldeneye fame) and Treat Williams (lots of films but never the lead), this is a fun-filled rollercoaster of a ride. There are also a number of even less famous people you have seen before although I do know Wes Studi (Last of the Mohicans - the one with the hatchet and the bad haircut) and the annoying one from The Mummy (quaintly enough, he is annoying in this one too). I'd never heard of this movie until I came across the DVD on the shelf at Woolworths, which as I could get it for a tenner, I decided to give it a try. The film is a sort of sci-fi/horror movie which while suffering from a pretty poor plot, does what it's supposed to. Entertain. Deep Rising is an action/horror film directed by Stephen Sommers, who would later go on to direct "The Mummy" and "Van Helsing". It stars B-movie legend Treat Williams and Famke Janssen and Djimon Hounsou, who are both a lot more well known now. Finnegan (Williams) is the leader of a group of mercenaries who takes on some very dangerous clients. Well, it certainly doesn't seem as though they did. The plot reminds me of some kids cartoon action movie. It really does, mostly due to the totally stupid and unbelievable escapes from the 'monster', and the "Oh look, a big monster's trying to kill us all, run away!" sort of plot. Deep Rising...not quite a B movie, but didn't make it as an A movie. Our reluctant mercenary hero, Finnegan (Treat Williams), takes on the job of transporting a gang of gung-ho ex-military types to predesignated coordinates. Unbeknownst to Finnegan and his small crew of two the gang are going to raid the worlds most luxurious cruise ship to rob the vault. The story basically is about a luxury crusier who sets of on its maiden voyage in the China Sea. The owner, who is on board the ship, got his figures wrong when he built the ship so decides to hire some people to come and rob the ship, and then sink it so he can claim in the insurance.
