Advantages: Superb revenge drama with a human touch Disadvantages: It was overlooked at the cinema & probably will again on dvd
"God will forgive them. He will forgive them and allow them into heaven. I can't live with that."
So starts 'Dead Man's Shoes' , a film in which Richard, played by Paddy Considine, is seeking revenge on the drugs gang and it's leader, Sonny (played by ex-boxer, Gary Stretch) who abused his mentally challeged brother, Anthony (Toby Kebell) while Richard was away in the Army. Sounds nothing original, and maybe in one paragraph it's not, but given ... ...& with his ability to come out with gritty real English dialogue and accents & a real vision of how ordinary people live, it is a bit of a masterpiece.
Disgracefully over-looked at the cinema - no doubt due to Warp Films' new & therefore small status as film-makers & distributors- it only seemed to be shown in arthouse cinemas, despite glowing critical acclaim, and despite starring Considine, who also starred in Warp Films' first release, the Chris ...

Advantages: Bleak, brutal and quite emotional Disadvantages: Ending was a bit of a letdown; not to everyone's tastes
Dead Man's Shoes is a pretty apt name for this bleak, brutal British revenge thriller. It's directed by relative newcomer Shane Meadows (whose previous films include 24/7 and Once Upon A Time In The Midlands) and it stars Paddy Considine, who has now become something of a Hollywood name, after appearing in Cinderella Man, and the upcoming Bourne Ultimatum.
It was nominated for best British film at the 2005 Baftas (losing out to Vera Drake) and won ... ...before, but I would imagine Dead Man's Shoes is a very good addition to either of these genres.
It works mainly because of the gripping central plot, its gritty realism, and the riveting lead performance from Paddy Considine. The story is extremely simple in essence, and at about the halfway point I thought I knew exactly where it was going. Luckily, the story becomes a bit stranger as it progresses (including one drug-fuelled scene that borders ...

I bought in on DVD from play.com for £4.99 so it was pretty cheap, even if it was rubbish I couldn’t really lose. Compelling. Brilliant. Genius”. Both quotes along ... ...be the same film.
Dead mans shoes is a story of revenge. Richard is an ex-soldier who returns to his home town in the midlands. He has a younger brother called Anthony. Anthony is mentally handicapped and starts hanging around with a group of lads, one is a drug dealer called sonny, played by an ex-boxer called Gary Stretch, the rest of the gang are all drug dealers as well but work for Sonny and are scared stiff of him.

**MOVIE ONLY REVIEW**
I rented this out a year or so ago. I happened to catch a small piece of information about it on a culture show. I'd never heard of it, but it sounded interesting so I watched it. I'm glad I did - It's possibly the best British film of the new millenia.
I watched it again only the other day, having purchased it in the HMV summer sale for £4.49 (it's not there anymore, I've looked!)
The plot of this film sounds pretty pedestrian ... ...avenge his mentally disabled brother. Said brother having been taken advantage of by a local gang of petty criminals who have used him as a plaything. But as you watch the film you realise that it's much more ambitious than that.
The director. Shane Meadows, is now considered to be a major hope for British film-making. Prior to this movie he had written and directed a couple of other highly praised pieces (Twentyfourseven & A Room For Romeo Brass). ...

...good and bad things about Dead Man's Shoes the one thing I never knew was that it had this highly underused actor in it. Having seen the trailer on the movie 9 Songs I decided to make the purchase £4.99 was all it cost from Play.Com. Something has happened to Richard's brother Anthony, something so bad Richard and Anthony return to their old home town to get some sort of justice. Richard immediately becomes noticed by the local drug dealer who challenges ... ...thing that stands out about Dead Man's Shoes is the location; this remote village come town in Derbyshire is not the expected location for such a sinister under belly of drugs and gang violence. In the middle of the countryside Director Shane Meadows and his location crew have found a bleak and desolate looking estate of mainly pre fabricated council style properties. Second stick out point is the gang that so clearly run this town; they are all ...

Advantages: Memorable movie with plenty of entertainment Disadvantages: Nothing serious
Paddy Considine stars as an army veteran who returns to his sleepy derbyshire hometown to see his younger, disabled brother. The early parts of the film see Richard (Considine) going to various places with his younger brother in tow and allow some sibling connections to be built up around the audience.
The other main charcters are a group of small time drug dealers, mostly harmless but with aslightly stupid ruthless streak. Led by Sonny, an eerie, ... ...start. The rest of the gang are likeable in certain circumstances and allows for a certain empathy when Richard confronts them. He is incensed by the way his brother was treated whilst he was away, and scenes depicting the things they did are shown in hazy black and white intermittently throughout the film.
The main character is brutally vengeful, but his weaknesses are portrayed so well by Considine that it is difficult not to sympathise with his ...

Advantages: Horror/Drama/Brit Flick all rolled into one Disadvantages: Very dark and gritty, not to everyone's tastes
After seeing Dead Man's Shoes get nominated for Best British Film at the BAFTAs, I thought nothing more of it, until I obtained a copy of the film recently. I don't usually like British-made films but I thought I would give it a try anyway.
Runtime: 86 minutes
Starring: Paddy Considine, Gary Stretch, Toby Kebbell
The film follows two brothers, Richard (Considine) and Anthony (Kebbell) as they return to their home town. They take up occupance in ... ...those Hollywood slasher flicks. Dead Man's Shoes contains a high level of grit (sex, violence, drugs) which we have come to expect from British films, and intertwines it with an underlying emotional drama.
The performances are very convincing, even from Considine, which is strange considering how few lines he actually has in the film. The supporting cast are just as good and you will truly believe the characters' stories as you watch the film.

In my opinion...What a Great Film.
I had heard it was good by a few friends, but after purchasing this film on DVD and watching it on a weeknight it made my week complete.
The film is very well structured and seems so naturally true.
When watchhing the film your eyes are glued to the television to see what may happen next, and whilst wondering what the end will be like in between jumping and biting your fingers.
Quite an emotional yet finger ... ...which neither me or my partner expected.
This film would be great for a girlie or lads night, just dont walk away from the tv, you may miss something.
Good English Film and this makes a change!

Paddy Considine stars in this awesome British film about retribution and revenge.
Set in a downtrodden midlands town, our hero returns from the army to sort out the bullies who have been making his mentally disabled brothers life a misery.

The film is completed by a very surprising ending with an unexpected twist. A true real ...

This film is about the bond between a boy and his brother. The eldest went away to join the army and while he was away his younger brother was bullied, tortured and intimdated and from when the brother returned the guilt on the his shoulders led him on a bloody misson of revenge.

Put simply 'Dead Man's Shoes' is one of the best and most underated British films of the past ten years. Having been recommended the DVD by a friend I found the film to be one of the best I have seen with a captivating dark storyline interwoven with a sublime scipt full of unexpectedly funny moments as well as being strongly emotional in parts. What impressed me most about this film was the real-ness of the acting which seemed so natural that it ... ...a fim concerned with real life with believable characters being put in extreme situations giving it a much harder hittingeffect than most films, especially to a British audience.
