Advantages: Johnny Depp's in it! Disadvantages: none
After reading the book by Joanne Harris, I decided to watch the film to see if it was a good adaptation of this truly amazing story.
Well, I was surprised. This film is excellent and in some ways even better than the book as it gives you more of the atmosphere, helped of course by the characters, costume etc. That's probably why it was awarded for 5 academy awards including best picture (so the box tells me). Not too sure about the soundtrack - a ...

Ooh la la Review ofChocolat (Wide Screen)by

Advantages: costume, setting, script, and the beautiful beautiful man that is johnny depp Disadvantages: Johnny does a pretty bad irish accent
This is truly a wonderful movie. It is so heart-warming, and there aren't many movies around these days which can leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy inside like this film does.
This film has lots of critical acclaim, has an excellent cast led by Juliette Binoche, and is nominated for several academy awards. But that is not what should convince you go and see it - It should be because you want to be truly inspired.
Its hard to define what genre ...

Advantages: Chocolate, what more do you need? Disadvantages: Seems a little old fashioned, but it's better than you expect!
I wasn't too keen on going to see this. It was my Mum who sugessted it and I said yes just cos i wanted to do something together and couldn't realy think of anything. It seemed a bit like a "older persons" film, not a typical teen movie, which I normally like to go and see. I knew the basic storyline, that it was set in a little french town and a woman comes and sets up a chocolate shop, and there's a lot of commotion about it. Anything to do with ...

Advantages: Good acting. Beautiful scenery. Great instrumental soundtrack Disadvantages: Slow in places
Firstly, let me say this. Chocolat is not a film for "the lads" to go and see! This is a film which is emotional and sentimental, as well as funny and quirky. A perfect film for a night out with the girls.
Lansequenet is a small provincila village in France, where life is peaceful, everyone has happy lives, and everyone attends church for mass. When a strange woman named Vianne and her daughter Anouk arrive to take over the old patisserie, things ...

Harris' story tells of an independant single mother, Vianne Rocher (Juliette Binoche), who turns a conservative rural village upside down when she opens a 'chocolaterie' in the middle of Lent. Refusing to conform, Vianne becomes considered as a threat to 'morality' by the traditionalist members of the community, but soon develops into an exemplary figure to a selection of villagers, who realise how they have repressed their own individuality to seek ...

Advantages: Good performances, nice to watch Disadvantages: Script is weak, everything could be a bit more
Having refound my past form of cinema attendances (going as much as I can) - it was unavoidable that I would see films that I was not extatic about seeing. "Chocolat" was not one of these films however - it has a cast of some of the best actors in entertainment today - Juliette Binoche, Alfred Molina, Judi Dench and Johnny Depp, normally a sure fire way to make me go to the cinema. Or so I hoped...

Advantages: beautiful in terms of image Disadvantages: predictable
You will like it because the Photography is beautiful, the actors are good and the story has a touch of mystery (or magic). Besides you want to like a film called “Chocolat” that deals with people’s hidden desires.
You will not like it because it’s predictable, a bit too long and slow and the characters aren’t fully developed, so that their stories aren’t clear or completely convincing. Not to mention the fake French accent of most of the actors.
The ...

Sweet and Sour Review ofChocolat (Wide Screen)by

Advantages: See Review Disadvantages: See Review
A new chocolate shop opening in a sleepy French village changes the lives of its inhabitants forever in the Oscar nominated film Chocolat. Set in 1959, the village of Lansquenet has remained largely unchanged through time and its church-going, God-fearing residents enjoy a peaceful, passive lifestyle.
But all this is set to change when Vianne (Juilette Binoche) and her young daughter Anouk move into the village and open up a chocolate shop serving ...

La Chocolat Review ofChocolat (Wide Screen)by

Advantages: subtle and romantic Disadvantages: Bot too much detail in story line
Chhocolat is a subtle comedy, in which a young mother Vianne (Binoche) arrives and settles in to an old fashioned town, who are very much into their traditional ways. However, Vianne doesn't always abide by these. She opens her own chocolate shop, creating exquisite chocolates that villagers can't seem to resist, allowing themselves to be tempted and gain happiness. But not too long after another man - Roux (Johnny Depp) -arrives in town, and Vianne ...

Advantages: Good cast, wonderful music, great locale Disadvantages: none!
This is a very intresting film to watch. Juliette Binoche is a wonderful as a confectioner who opens a chocolate shop in Lansquenent. Of course, the uptight villagers come out and become curious. Of course, there is the villian, Comte de Reynaud who tries to turn the town against her and sample her chocolates. Johnny Depp is great as the "river rat" who stirs things up. This is a pretty good film that makes you think about trying a sample of those ...

Advantages: Gentle, sweet smelling! Disadvantages: Johnny Depp's dodgy accent
After reading the enchanting story by Joanne Harris, Icouldn't wait to see the film. I was not disapointed. Its a gentle film about the intriguing 'Vianne' a sexy, but wayward mother, aetheist, & chocolate maker. She moves with the North wind her little girl, Anouk following reluctantly. They settle in a little town in 1950's France, in Lent & open a Chocolaterie. The film is gentle & shows the people with a 'small town' mentality a delicious alternative ...

Advantages: What a classic with some good star performances Disadvantages: Makes your tummy rumble not good for dieters like myself.
Warning do not even think about seeing this flick if you do not have a king size bag of maltesers on hand. It's a film all about life's little luxuries and enjoying yourself and it even has the gorge Johnny Depp in it. This magical and tear rendering picture is worth a look and receives a wonderfully chocolaty thums up from me. Little bit cheesy in spots iI must admit but thats what we brits love about these classics. Though I must say it doesn't ...

Advantages: The whole atmosphere and content of the film was exquisite! Disadvantages: none
This film is definately one to see. It is a film I have watched over and over and I never tire of the flowing storyline and sheer emotion that is renedered by all the cast. This is amazingly put together and brings to the surface our most intimate feeling. This is one to watch. The roles played by all the actors are lovable and memorable. The relationships which develop are easy to realte to and most people will be able to find something in this film ...

1960, small town France. Vianne Rocher and her pre-teen daughter move into town and open a chocolate shop just as lent is beginning. The town's small-minded mayor can't accept this and does his best to shut her down, but her warm personality and incredible chocolates manage to win over many townsfolk. Things get shaken up even more when a group of river drifters, led by Roux, stop into town (to the even greater distress of the mayor) and Vianne takes ...
