Advantages: Chocolate, what more do you need?
Disadvantages: Seems a little old fashioned, but it's better than you expect!

I wasn't too keen on going to see this. It was my Mum who sugessted it and I said yes just cos i wanted to do something together and couldn't realy think of anything. It seemed a bit like a "older persons" film, not a typical teen movie, which I normally like to go and see. Advantages: Good acting. Beautiful scenery. Great instrumental soundtrack
Disadvantages: Slow in places

Firstly, let me say this. Chocolat is not a film for "the lads" to go and see! This is a film which is emotional and sentimental, as well as funny and quirky. A perfect film for a night out with the girls. Lansequenet is a small provincila village in France, where life is peaceful, everyone has happy lives, and everyone attends church for mass. Harris' story tells of an independant single mother, Vianne Rocher (Juliette Binoche), who turns a conservative rural village upside down when she opens a 'chocolaterie' in the middle of Lent. Having refound my past form of cinema attendances (going as much as I can) - it was unavoidable that I would see films that I was not extatic about seeing. "Chocolat" was not one of these films however - it has a cast of some of the best actors in entertainment today - Juliette Binoche, Alfred Molina, Judi Dench and Johnny Depp, normally a sure fire way to make me go to the cinema. You will like it because the Photography is beautiful, the actors are good and the story has a touch of mystery (or magic). Besides you want to like a film called “Chocolat” that deals with people’s hidden desires. You will not like it because it’s predictable, a bit too long and slow and the characters aren’t fully developed, so that their stories aren’t clear or completely convincing. Chhocolat is a subtle comedy, in which a young mother Vianne (Binoche) arrives and settles in to an old fashioned town, who are very much into their traditional ways. This is a very intresting film to watch. Juliette Binoche is a wonderful as a confectioner who opens a chocolate shop in Lansquenent. Of course, the uptight villagers come out and become curious. Of course, there is the villian, Comte de Reynaud who tries to turn the town against her and sample her chocolates. Johnny Depp is great as the "river rat" who stirs things up. After reading the enchanting story by Joanne Harris, Icouldn't wait to see the film. I was not disapointed. Its a gentle film about the intriguing 'Vianne' a sexy, but wayward mother, aetheist, & chocolate maker. She moves with the North wind her little girl, Anouk following reluctantly. They settle in a little town in 1950's France, in Lent & open a Chocolaterie. The film is gentle & shows the people with a 'small town' mentality a delicious alternative ... Read review

Advantages: What a classic with some good star performances
Disadvantages: Makes your tummy rumble not good for dieters like myself.

Warning do not even think about seeing this flick if you do not have a king size bag of maltesers on hand. It's a film all about life's little luxuries and enjoying yourself and it even has the gorge Johnny Depp in it. This magical and tear rendering picture is worth a look and receives a wonderfully chocolaty thums up from me. This film is definately one to see. It is a film I have watched over and over and I never tire of the flowing storyline and sheer emotion that is renedered by all the cast. This is amazingly put together and brings to the surface our most intimate feeling. This is one to watch. The roles played by all the actors are lovable and memorable.
