4 Stars A family classic - film and car Review with images 27/02/2007

Advantages Advantages A fun family film suitable for all ages young and old

Disadvantages Disadvantages A required taste so my hubby says.

~~ Chitty Chitty Bang Bang ~~ It is back to my collection of musicals and here I review the classic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. When I started to think about the movie, I asked myself what comes to mind when I think about it, is it the characters, the silly jokes, all the production numbers. No; it is the car and that fun song Chitty Chitty Bang Bang; I love you. Even now in my head I am singing away to that song. It will take me days to get it out of my head now, I know, I know I need to get a life, he, he. ~~ The Film ~~ You put your DVD in and start the film, but you are faced with a blank ... more

Advantages Advantages Likeable lead, nice locations

Disadvantages Disadvantages Long, flat, lifeless, packed with unmemorable tunes

As another blustery bank holiday weekend scrapes by, so out come all the usual suspects, thrust upon us by unmerciful television executives with little regard for value for money in the licence fee stakes. 1968's 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' was adapted for the screen by Roald Dahl, he who had already mangled Ian Fleming's work with the film adaptation of 'You Only Live Twice'. The book was Flemings only literary departure from Bond, and while Bond took to the big screen with little difficulty, 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' is one big unwieldy mess of a picture. Receiving lukewarm to damning reviews ... more

Advantages Advantages Good film. Good sing-a-long songs

Disadvantages Disadvantages Could be a bit long for some people. Not many extras on the DVD

When it comes to musicals, you can guarantee I’ll be in front of the TV watching it! I love musicals, and have quite a few in my DVD collection. One of them is “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”. I don’t think there’s many people out there who hasn’t seen it. It’s normally on every Christmas/New Year. (Perhaps I should have posted this review then!). Anyway, on with the show, as they say! Welcome to Ian Flemming's CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG. The film starts with the car in question in a speedway race and the theme tune to the film. But, those days are long gone and the poor old car is now sitting in a ... more

    Advantages Advantages Good Family fun

Disadvantages Disadvantages Rather long for younger children

An Ian Fleming novel produced by Albert ‘Cubby’ Broccoli featuring loads of gadgets and a flying car…you’d have to guess I was talking about one of the many James Bond movies but it fact and improbably it’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! From the first Bond film in 1962 to his last in 1989 ‘Cubby’ Broccoli devoted himself to producing what was to become the multi-million dollar James Bond movie franchise. However 1968 was a rare exception and sitting in between ‘You Only Live Twice’ (1967) and ‘On Her Majesty's Secret Service’ (1969) ... more

Advantages Advantages A classic in family entertainment

Disadvantages Disadvantages A very long film, no thrills DVD

An epic amongst children’s entertainment is a good way to describe the 1968 film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, It is family entertainment at its very best. With a running time of 2 hours and 25 minutes it is extremely long for a children’s film. Remarkably however children as young as two or 3 will watch the entire film with interest such is the level of entertainment it provides. THE STORY: Dick Van Dyke takes the lead role as Caractacus Potts, an inventor whose enthusiasm is far greater than his level of success. He lives in a windmill with his children Jeremy and Jemima and his own eccentric ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages whish i had this car

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Has got to go down as an all time favourite of mine, its been enjoyed in my family as far back as I can remember, and still just as popular today, The story is based on the Potts family, Father Caracatus Potts (Dick Van Dyke) his two children Jemima (Heather Ripley) Jeremy (Adrian Hall) and Grandfather Potts played by (Lionel Jeffries). Caracatus is an eccentric Inventor, who is trying to make ends meet, and support his family through his inventions, but to no avail. The children are enthralled with a rotting old race car, at the back of a nearby farm yard, they use it ... more

Advantages Advantages A classic film,a great trailer

Disadvantages Disadvantages only special feature=original trailer

This DVD was, I'm guessing, perhaps a rush job (hence a new special edition DVD now being released) because it includes only the film, the original theatrical trailer, and a information booklet (which, granted, is quite an interesting read) However the options presented on the DVD (the film, the trailer, scene selections and subtitles), though are few, are presented clealy and are easily navigated through. Now to deal with the film itself. I am sure that this film is viewed by most as a children's classic, a must-see. The MGM film was based on the Ian Fleming (writer of original Bond's) and ... more

“Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” was released in 1968. It was adapted from Ian Fleming's book by Roald Dahl and directed by Ken Hughes. The film starts with a collection of famous Edwardian motor races. This car wins them all, the driver crashes it in order to avoid killing a child. The wrecked car is then found in the junkyard of Mr.Coggins (Desmond Llewellyn, 'Q' of James Bond fame) where a couple of children, Jeremy and Jemima Potts, are in love with it. They convince their father, an inventor named Caractacus Potts (Dick Van Dyke) to buy and repair it. Truly Scrumptious (Sally Anne Howes), an ... more

Another classic film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, i loved this film when I was younger and as I have grown up I still love it and watch it when its on the telly at Christmas or on a bank holiday. It is cheesy and everything but you will be guaranteed to be tapping you toes and singing along to the classic songs from Truly Scrumptious, toot sweets and the chitty chitty bang bang but to name a few. The story is about Professor Potts played by Dick Van Dyke when his children Jeremy and Jemima found a rusty old banger in the scrap yard and they manage to convince they dad to buy it. Advantages Advantages Good Clean family fun

Disadvantages Disadvantages Slighty too long for the younger ones

What can I say about this film, I think it is one of the film classics from the Sixties. My three year old daugher wants to watch it time and time again and I have also had to buy the soundtrack that goes with the film With the timeless classics including Truly Scrumptious and Toot sweets, but to name a few. The storyline is a bit farfetched at times, who's every heard of a car floating on water and starting to fly when it goes over the white cliff's of Dover, but with a little imagination little children think it's enchanting. With great cameo performances from the true master Benny Hill ... more
