Not Only a Windy City !!

Advantages: Best stage to movie transition
Disadvantages: Richard Gere's voice (god love him!!)

6 Academy Award winning movie Chicago, based on the stage musical written by Bob Fosse which has been running in the West End and on Broadway forever finally made it into a movie. Made by Walt Disney Studios and directed by the fantastic Rob Marshall (Memoirs of a Geisha) this movie made a smooth transition from stage to screen effortlessly. Not since Moulin Rouge have we seen a decent musical come to the big screen. Set in 1920's Chicago, the 'bit ...
...she is thrown in jail with Chicago's most famous singing murderess Velma Kelly - played by the brilliant Catherine Zeta Jones. Roxie realises , through Velma's meteoric fame since being accused of murder, that she could reach her ambitions of being a famous singer/dancer. So they compete with the towns spin doctor of a lawyer - Billy Flynn, player by Richard Gere. All the stars - although before watching it you wouldn't believe they can all sing ...

Sweet Home Chicago

Advantages: For the blokes...Girls in their undies
Disadvantages: Not 100% faithful to the stage show

...disappointed. Set in 1920's Chicago where the jazz is hot and the gin is cold (to steal a line from 'All That Jazz'), this is the story of Roxie Harte, who killed her lover in a fit of rage and her bid to escape the dealth penalty, set free from prison and see her name up in lights as a big star. The film is as fast paced as the stage show, and the transition between the musical numbers and the dialogue sequences is done well (though I'm still ...
...The songs are catchy, the filming is slick and well with half the female cast rampaging around in their skimpies most of the time, you can take the man in your life to see this and he won't complain about being made to sit through a chick flick...every bloke I know that has seen this film has enjoyed it. There were some noticable changes from the stage show (what happened to the transvestite newspaper reporter?), but these changes do not detract ...

A sassy night in

Advantages: Great dancing and music
Disadvantages: None

I had wanted to see Chicago at the cinema when it first came out, but you know what its like - its not everyone's cup of tea. My other half certainly made his feelings clear about going to watch a "musical"!!!! So as soon as the dvd came out, I was first in the queue! I bought the dvd in a supermarket and it cost me 12.99, and I have to admit its the best 12.99 I've ever spent - I can't recall how many times I have watched this film. The film is ...
...Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly played by Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones respectfully. Zeta-Jones for me is the best - she is a great singer and dances absolutely superbly. They both find themselves in prison for murder and both find themselves using the same lawyer, the slimy Billy Flynn played by Richard Gere. Without giving too much away about the storyline, it mainly centres about their plight to get out of jail and back on the stage in ...

Moulin Rouge Has A Contender!!

Advantages: Easy-going and alot easier to understand than the stage show!
Disadvantages: None that I could find!

...feel good, in the way Chicago does. After seeing the show in London a few years ago and being horribly disappointed, I decided to pluck up the courage and watch the film. I've been missing a masterpiece. Spectacular scenes, cinematic wizardry and a red hot script makes Chicago stand out among the rest. Catherine Zeta Jones as femme fatale is stunning, Rene Zellweger as not so innocent Roxie is sassy and Richard Gere as an arrogant attorney proves ...
...first number you are captivated by the music; you're never kept waiting for something to happen as something is always happening. The switch between stage and screen throughout the film is masterful. One of the best numbers is when Zellweger is sitting on Richard Gere's lap as a dummy and he is doing the talking for her. Its Moulin Rouge meets Barnum. Deceit, hogwash and dazzling scenes that keep you pinned to your seat. This film is guaranteed ...

Chicago-Musical extraordinaire

Advantages: Great songs
Disadvantages: Some parts of

I remember seeing this film at the cinema for the first time and I was astounded. It's an amazing film with great songs and its no wonder that its the longest running show on Broadway, it so captivating and the songs are simply amazing. The cast of the film also add to it with Catherine Zeta-Jones playing a sassy Velma Kelly and Renee Zellwegger playing the naive Roxie Hart. All the songs are performed to perfection and are so catchy and interesting, ...
...putting spice into all the murderers and Razzle Dazzle which is just a great song. I think overall it was a great movie and the story behind it was helped enormously by the songs, even though I did find some parts were not as interesting as others but they did not last long. I must admit that nothing beats the actual musical performed on Broadway but the film is a great tribute to the show. ...

You can always move on

Advantages: all
Disadvantages: none

...I had never seen Chicago performed so when I heard the film was going to be released I was very happy. I watched it the first day it was out. I watched it in English because I think that dubbed films, no matter how good the dubbers are, have a slightly different meaning and sense than the original ones. I relished this film so I watched it again, this time in Spanish, and I must say that it is way better in English! The other day I saw it again, ...
...though I must admit that I liked it much more at the cinema theatre. Now I'll talk about the story and the songs, so I don't recommend you to follow reading this if you haven't seen it yet, because you won't get surprised with the unexpected and interesting changes in the storyline. The story starts the night Velma Kelly, a popular jazz performer, murders her sister and her husband when she finds them in bed together. But we still don't know that ...

The movie of the year??

Advantages: Good movie...great soundtrack...
Disadvantages: few extras...not so great image

I don't know if this is THE movie of the last year....but surely is a very solid effort of the director Rob Marschall to bring the broadway musical onto the silver screen. The numbers are colourful and bold and the actors trying to show that they can sing and dance along with the acting...The main problem is that although they are trying ...their final product is mediocre to an expertised eye.Renne Zelweger is good enough playing Roxie...the main ...

Razzle Dazzle them

Advantages: Great dancing, singing and plot!
Disadvantages: It doesn't go on for longer!

In my opinion, this is one of the best musicals in the last 20 or 30 years! Featuring Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zita Jones, it is the story of a young girl, Roxie Hart (played by Renee) who is having an affair with a man she thinks can make her famous. When she realises this isn't the case, she shoots him and so is sent to prison, where she meets Catherine Zita Jones who has killed her husband and sister and tries to rope her into performing ...
...the trial of Roxie, in which she is found innocent and due to all the publicity she has received in prison, thinks she can become the next big thing, however she soon learns the ways of starbiz, at the top one minute and on the scrapheap the next. Frequently punctuated by brilliant songs, with astonishing dance routines and real emotion, this film is a real must have item for anyone, whatever you taste in films. Watch the moves, listen to the songs ...

Now thats what i call a movie

Advantages: best musical to have been brought to the big screen
Disadvantages: cast could have been better

...what i call a movie CHICAGO is propably the best musical to havebeen brought to the big acreen in recent times, i mustadmet i was already partial to chicago having seen it on stage and being blown away by it, but there was always the fear that the play wouldn't be able to make the transition to cinema . But director Rob Marshall, a stage-vet making his movie directorial debut, does a brilliant job. Setting a breathless pace as the movie races from ...
...helping to movethe story along, Chicago proves to be an enthralling, exciting and joyously cynical experience. The look of the movie isanother inmortant element with the dazzling use of lurid colours proving to be extremely effectively. On top of that the movie has something important to say about the cult of celebrity that dominates our society and the muck-raking media. Starring Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta Jones, Richard Gere and Queeen Latifa. ...

Chicago- The new Grease

Advantages: Catchy songs that make you want to dance in the isles
Disadvantages: Not very many characters a bit two dimensional

I thoroughly enjoyed this film for many reasons. It encorporates a number of emotions jealousy, rage, tragedy, scandal and yet still manages to get your toe tapping along to the tunes but without making a farce of the film overall. This film highlights some serious issues also about the influence of the media and lenience towards celebraties in the judicial system in general which is a very modern issue even though the film isn't set in modern times. ...

Best Musical for ages!!!!

Advantages: Dvd has lots of extra's
Disadvantages: Dvd is more expensive than VHS

Wow, i can't belive this film has only been reviewed 7 times! This is the best musical to come along since Moulin Rouge! I can't believe how well Richard Gere, Rene Zellweger(especially after her poor performance in Down with love) and Catherine Zeta-Jones can sing, they do an excellent job. The story is brilliant; music all the way, a non stop frenzy of in your face 1920's glamour, I was expecting there to be some talky parts but there really ...

The REVIEW : Chicago

Advantages: A pleasant welcome return to the musical era
Disadvantages: I would question the casting of the set of bones known as Rene Zelwigger

Chicago the place may be unremarkable but the musical is something from another world. I wondered if the hollywood take would impress me as much. Did Ms. Zeta Jones Douglas really deserve that Oscar? I concluded after watching the toe tapping spectacle and loving so much of it, that YES, she did. I enjoyed the film and had that warm feeling inside after watching it. My only concern was the casting of Rene Zellwigger - the only weak link in the ...
...exceptional. Zeta Jones outshone her in every respect. Queen Latifah had it going on. Despite refusing to rehurse prior to filming Richard gere even mangaged to dazzle Rene out of sight. All point considered - The only weak link was never weak enough to ruin this masterpiece. Musicals are back, for good? ...
