● Synopsis
After watching his parents marriage fail due to the failure of his fathers business, teenager Frank Abagnale (Leonardo DiCaprio) goes on a rollercoaster of an adventure as he cons his way into jobs as a pilot, doctor and lawyer, all amassing him a vast amount of wealth. But hot on his trail is FBI agent Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks) who is determined to bring the young con man in.
● Opinion
Quite often when you read the blurb ... ...sounds like an intriguing plot as well a star studded cast and an exceptionally talented director the film is going to disappoint. Such is the case of "Catch Me if You Can" a film inspired by a true story of cat and mouse between a young con man and an FBI agent. Whilst disappointing the film is not terrible, it just has a few too many flaws which detract from what could have been a decent film.
One of the main issues I have with the film is that ...

...no matter what, he will catch his man. Can Frank continue to hide himself away from justice? Although this is not a film I would usually be interested in watching, the casting of Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role persuaded me that it might be worth a look. DiCaprio is, I think, a very talented actor, as his early roles in Gilbert Grape and Romeo and Juliet have proved. As Frank Abagnale, he gives a really excellent performance and one that I found ... ...has to be a young teenager one moment and a polished man of means the next. I would have preferred to have more of an insight into his behaviour though - although he gives a convincing performance, there isn't really an explanation of why he behaves the way he does. We do know that his parents have been through a difficult divorce, but this isn't really enough. However, this is more a fault of the screenwriter than DiCaprio.
Tom Hanks plays Carl ...

the background story Catch Me If You Can was released in 2002 and is based around the life of the infamous con-man Frank Abagnale Jnr (Di Caprio) who's real life game of cat and mouse with FBI agent Carl Hanratty (played by Tom Hanks) during the 1960's was almost talk of the US. ...and smirking with self satisfaction. Catch Me If You Can is probably his most challenging film since his Indie days although it’s hardly taxing stuff leaving you feeling that he did it for his career rather than to win acclaim for his talent.
Whilst it’s confusing that Hanks and Leo were given roles totally unsuited to them, the real puzzle is what Spielberg is doing mixed up in all this. The trailer makes it look like a slick ninety minute chase ... ...lively score and Christopher Walken, Catch Me If You Can is all one note with moments of humour that are ultimately wiped out by a plotless plot and rambling narrative. Based on a remarkable true story and billed as a 'transcontinental game of cat and mouse' between a young con-artist and an FBI detective, 'Catch Me If You Can' is a highly watchable and thoroughly enjoyable experience. I think it's safe to say that 'Catch me if you can' is not the typical sort of movie I watch. If it's not a girly chick flick, comedy or kids film, I'm usually not interested, but after being assured that this film contained no violence or gore, I agreed on watching the DVD!

It's the mid sixties and Frank Abagnale Jnr is barely sixteen years old when his life is turned upside down. He and his parents have recently been forced to move ... ...father failed to pay his taxes, and as if that wasn't bad enough, he then he walks in on his mother in bed with another man. Frank is devastated, but shortly afterwards, he returns home, and an even bigger bombshell is dropped on him - his parents are getting divorced. A lawyer talks to Frank, and tells him he must choose which of his parents he wants to live with. All of this is too much for the young Frank, and he runs away from home.

Catch Me If You Can is the story of a conman who passed himself off as an airline pilot and paediatric doctor among other things, and a dogged FBI check fraud officer. Starring Leonardo Di Caprio in the role of the conman (Frank) and Tom Hanks as the FBI agent (Carl), it was a film that promised much. I never got round to watching it in the cinema as I was just too busy, and wasn't entirely convinced that it would be a good film. So the question ... ...and FBI agent determined to catch him. Whatever else may happen in the film, it really doesn't stray very far from this basic plot. As such, the plot is interesting but seemed only partially developed. Based on a true story (with the person whose life it was based around being a consultant for the film!), it does to some extent show why Frank entered this lifestyle because of his rather eccentric father, how family disputes played a part in his development, ...

Catch me if you can
Catch me If you can is a true life story of a young boy Frank Abagnale Jnr who ran away from home to avoid dealing with his parents divorce - All he had was a cheque book and £10 to get him on his way.
Using his cheque book he tried to stay a few nights in a motel, but when they realised the money didn't clear, they kicked him out, so he then tried his luck with the banks, and found out that Becoming an airline pilot he could ... ...he had to try and catch him, there was an instant bond between the two.
Very good film well worth watching.
