Can you imagine being away from your family and friends, well thats what happens to Tom Hanks in this movie. Tom Hanks is a fedex employee who is marooned on a deserted Island, with no food or heating he has to defend for himself. The only thing keeping him going is the love for his girlfriend back home. I'm going to be honest...I saw "Castaway" with no preconceptions at all because usually this kind of film just doesn't make me go "Oh I gotta see that". FANTASTC AMAZING This is one of the best films I think I have ever seen. And in a sad sort of a way, I can safely say I've seen a lot of films. I generally don't care for Tom Hanks films (I thought Forrest Gump and Philadelphia were both very over-rated), but was happy to make an exception in this case. The only problem I had with the film was the last 15 minutes - I won't spoil it for you by going into detail, but basically it was all a little false, and quite badly written. The rest of it is superb - the plane crash scene is one of the most gripping scenes ever filmed, and has to be seen ...
...Most of the action takes place on the island, and again the scenery and acting is superb. I went to see Castaway a couple of weeks ago now, it was brilliant in parts, but I would advise people to leave after he has been rescued. Whilst on the island Tom Hanks captures the audiences attention and their emotions, as we se and hear only him for the majority of the film. The audience laughed, winced, and felt his desperation alng with him whilst he was on the island. We shared in his desperation and watched on intruiged as he became so attached ...

In a shipwreck situation it would be common sense to use all available resources to ensure survival. Tom Hank's character was too busy playing postmaster, where in reality, you would rip open the packages and not store them, to find any useful items. I found it strange that he didn't use the ice skates to provide fire, instead he labouriously used the friction method, by hand, not even having the common sense to use the laces as a bow. I went to see this film last week, not really because I wanted to but because it was the only thing on. Has to be said that I am glad I made the effort as Tom Hanks put up a superb performance. As I am sure you will have gathered the story is about a man (Fed-ex employee) whose plane crashes and he finds himself the only survivor washed up on a tropical (uninhabited) island. This film is incredibly facinating. I won't give the story away for those who have not seen it, but definitely worth watching.
