Advantages: Memorable, captivating, involving Disadvantages: Too long, weak ending
This film is long. Too long. 2hrs 20mins. Not that it isn’t captivating, but most people’s attention starts to wander after sitting in a cramped seat for a while, trying to munch silently. This could have done with being half an hour shorter, and not just because of cramped legs, the plot was getting tired too.

He is only let down by ... ...are highly effective and believable, but there are moments which leave you wondering if the director had lost his mind. For example, there is a ‘Free Willy’ type moment with a whale. I thought this was supposed to be a serious, adult film. Anyway, the plot. Tom plays Chuck Noland who is a troubleshooter for Federal Express, and lived his life by a clock. He never seems to have time for his life, nevermind his loyal girlfriend played by Helen Hunt who seems to be constantly waiting around for him to include her in his life. On Christmas Eve he is called away to work, but he had ... ...to the airport he gives her the box and tells her they will do it properly when he returns. Advantages: Tense, unpredictable Disadvantages: Little dialogue
...Until now that is.
Castaway is a new film starring Tom Hanks and woman of the moment Helen Hunt. It's basically a remake of the old Robinson Crusoe story, but with a slight shift in plot and a few additions. The basic premise remains the same – man coping with life after being shipwrecked. The plot is rich, and goes as follows:
Chuck Noland (Hanks) is an executive. He runs the global package delivery firm known as Fed Ex, and he's passionate ... ...effect on the brain, and Castaway deals with this topic admirably, and the way the human mind changes to help us deal with this kind of situation.
There's a lot of tension in this film. Will one of Chuck's ideas succeed? Will he escape from the island before he goes insane? And will he ever see Kelly again? All these questions are answered, but the plot is sufficiently complex that it isn't obvious what will happen next. I admire this quality of ...

...two extremes…
In truth Castaway is pretty dull fare with not a great deal to commend it to the uncommitted souls who do not find Hanks the best thing since sliced bread. He was pretty good in Philadelphia, evoked sympathy and admiration for his character in The Green Mile and won plaudits for his portrayal of Forrest Gump, but for the most part the Hanks master touch has left me curiously unmoved – his studiedly gauche character acting has always ... ...his newest performance.
And Castaway has not a lot going for it apart from Hanks’ performance – if you’re unimpressed by the man then you’ll probably be unimpressed by the film.
The descent into madness through isolation, and the consequent life changing experience of being shipwrecked and cast away all alone on a desert island for the long term, is what this film is really all about and it’s gripping enough in its limp wrested way, but doesn’t ...

Advantages: Excellent acting by Hanks Disadvantages: gets a little long winded towards the end
Tom Hanks is such a master of the subtle gesture that one could happily watch him, say, rubbing two sticks together.... That's good news for Cast Away, in which Hanks, playing a guy who has washed up on a deserted Pacific island after a plane crash, has to pull off that old Boy Scout firestarter trick. Cast Away, as directed by Robert Zemeckis could have used more of the sparks that Hanks finally generates in that scene. Heck, it could have used ... ...triumph for Hanks, goes flat in its final, draggy stretch when it overreaches for significance. I have to admit that I was dragged kicking and screaming to the cinema to see this film as, to be honest, I couldn’t think of anything else more boring - a film about being stranded on a desert island. And it stars Tom Hanks. But I had the choice of going to see it or spend Saturday night at home watching mediocre tv programmes and devouring a big bar of Galaxy. There was no contest - the chocolate won hands down but I was practically dragged ... ...Cinema in "The Quay" beside the River Clyde in Glasgow. So I stocked up on popcorn, Maltesers and a large size Irn Bru and settled down expecting two hours of boredom. I consoled myself with the thought that I could always write a scathing review for dooyoo afterwards and anyway, the seats were comfy so I could have a snooze if I wanted to. Thankfully, I didn’t fall asleep because if I had then I would have missed quite a good film - much, ...

Advantages: Excellent plane crash sequence. Good acting from Hanks Disadvantages: Anti-climatic ending
It seems to me that whenever Tom Hanks releases a film nowadays, people automatically say "He's gonna get an Oscar for this". I wonder if he gets sick of that? The man clearly puts a lot of effort into his research and method acting...the year he dieted to slim down his character makes it all the more feasible for 4 years to have passed in the story. Maybe he should choose an action film or something to shake off that Oscar boy tag, because it tends ... ...up about his Oscar credentials.
The whole film is one big advert for FedEx (though whether it's a good or bad one remains to be seen). We see Hanks training people in the FedEx way of life, delivering on time worldwide. He is a man whose life is run to a strict schedule. This all goes out of the window when his delivery plane crashes in the sea in the middle of nowhere. The plane crash sequence is horrifyingly realistic. Very well done indeed.

Having watched the film at my local cinema I was, at first inclined to laugh at the absurdity of the fact that a man could survive, unaided and alone on a desert island for five years. However, if one decides not to take the film at face value, and actually get in to it, and feel the emotions that the character feels, then it actually becomes quite entertaining. Tom Hanks, I thought did very well in his role as the man left stranded, in addition, ...

Tom Hanks sat in the celebrity auditorium at the bafta's and saw A new generation of Best Male' lift the bafta that may have been his! Advantages: Tom Hanks main role Disadvantages: Far fetched perhaps?
I went to see Cast Away finally after having to be disappointed on 2 occasions trying to get tickets. Unfortunately we ended up with front row seats which I was expecting to find very uncomfortable but as the film was so engrossing I didn't notice the crick in my neck until we left the cinema!
Anyway about the film...I personally love Tom Hanks as an actor, I find him very powerful in his delivery & very convincing in his character portryal and ... ...is just Tom Hanks on a beautiful island talking to "Wilson" (a volley ball!)or is silent. Only a very convincing actor coudl pull this kind of feat off and Tom manages it.
There are a few parts in the film which will take you by surpise - I jumped on at least 2 occasions. The ending of the film does seem to drag a little but I don't think that this detracts from the overall effect.
A MUST SEE.
OK so it is a little far fetched but then - it's not ...

Castaway…
I went to the cinema a while back and armed with my complimentary popcorn and bottle of beer (went posh and booked the premier) I sat waiting for what I thought a much anticipated and long awaited film.

The film then goes on for the next 90 ...

"When Hanks leaves the island, the audience should leave the cinema" as a famous film critic said. How right he was. This film had it all, the action, the humour, the drama and the scenery. Advantages: Tom Hanks' acting Disadvantages: too long, gets boring
I was looking forward to seeing Castaway, starring Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt. It had been advertised for months at the cinema and I thought it would be one of the best films this year. I was quite disappointed and I'll tell you why.
Well, it wasn't all bad. It was a very well-made film: Tom Hanks plays a wonderful part and the special effects are believable (and we all know how hard it is to create a believable plane crash). However, there just wasn't ... ...and for the most part it was Tom running around an island - alone (unless you count the volleyball!). Don;t get me wrong, he's good and I can't stress that enough, but it does get a bit tiring.
Some advice for potential viewers of this film: get involved! I saw it with two friends who thought it was wonderful and this was only because they let themselves become emotionally involved with the character (the only character!). I as envious of what they ...

Advantages: Amazing Story of survival Disadvantages: Some people may not like the lack of dialouge
This is a review of Castaway starring Tom Hanks directed by Robert Zemeckis.
Tom Hanks plays Chuck Noland, a systems engineer for FED-EX, he plays an organised, punctual, likable bloke.
Chucks love interest is played Helen Hunt and the two are much in love.
On route to another country for work purposes, Chuck awakens to find his plane has met a severe electrical storm and with his collegues (pilot & co pilot) their mighty FED-EX jet comes crashing ... ...raft and after climbling aboard and floating for many hours he falls into sleep.
When Chuck awakens there is no sign of the wreckage or his two collegues. he is on a strange deserted Island, not one other soul is on there with him.
Chuck is obviously distrubed and distressed but clings to the belief that help will be with him very shorty. Unkown to chuck the storm blew the plane miles of course and his isloted island is not on any flight path.
