Advantages: Keeps you interested, suitable for most people, a bril movie! Disadvantages: the beginning is not too hot!
...This was what happened when Castaway came out. I was very dissappointed and so as soon as we were able to rent out the video of this fab film, I dashed to my local Blockbuster! I walked home (with my carrier bag sparkling!) full of excited anticipation! In our family we have a ritual about watching movies. I got the popcorn, the others got the drinks and dimmed the lights. We were ready for action.............
The two main characters in this whopper ... ...only Tom Hanks-(my all time favourite!) Most films with Tom Hanks, Forest Gump, Apollo 13 etc.... I have thoughrly enjoyed and that goes for Helen Hunt as well. So I was expecting wonders, I was definetly not dissappointed!
The beginning may have started off slightly dull, but if you haven't seen this marvel then don't give up on it! Sorry if I am rambling a bit, I will try and get straight too the point ! Ok here goes......
The overall plot of ...

Castaway
No this is the not the film of the same name, made many years before with Oliver Reed where he went to a tropical island on purpose with a random woman and strutted around in the nude with her for the rest of the movie, this is one starring Tom Hanks as a man who involuntarily gets stranded on an island and thankfully keeps most of his clothes on!
This movie was always going to be a one-man affair, and therefore the film-makers where going ... ...lead role. They chose well, and Tom Hanks pulled off what I believe to be one of his best performances of his career. He had very little support from any other actors in the movie and it truly was a solo performance, and he did it brilliantly.
The story is basically, Chuck Noland (Hanks), is a systems engineer for the FedEx company and he is just about to happily marry his girlfriend (Helen Hunt) when he is called away to accompany a set of FedEx ...

This film stars Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt, although Tom Hanks stars much more prominently. If you don't like Tom Hanks then this film is certainly not for you. In the film Hanks plays Chuck Noland, an executive worker for the FedEx company, travelling on planes from place to place to ensure delivery of all the packages. It doesn't take a genius to figure out what is going to happen! Before the completely predictable plane crash Hanks propose to his ... ...you know the answer would be yes, that is if Hanks ever made it back home. The plane suffers a catastrophic failure and plummets in to the sea. Hanks, the sole survivor, manages to clamber in to a dinghy and floats towards a tropical Island, in the middle of nowhere. If you’ve ever read the book 'Lord of Flies' this Island is just how William Golding described his. A golden beach lined with palm trees! It doesn't take long before Hanks realises he ...

Advantages: Tom Hanks is pretty good, good SFX, unconventional ending Disadvantages: You can have too much of Tom Hanks... nothing really exceptional about the film
I saw this after reading somewhat mixed reviews, though the consensus seemed to be that it was good. With the basic plot being a man (Chuck, played by Tom Hanks) stranded on a desert island and having to fight for survival, the real question was: with the subject has been dealt with so many times before, what could they possibly do here that was any different from the myriad films going before it? Well, to its credit, it does manage to be a little ... ...stages; before, during and after the shipwreck. (Or, in this case, the air crash.) So I'll deal with each of these stages in turn. BEFORE The character is reasonably well drawn, though he is quite an irritating character in many ways (quite possibly less so to Americans, but we Brits are less tolerant of the managerial speak and the slush). So you don't feel 100% sympathy for him at first. But then I suppose you don't need to. The night he flies ...

...ok!! Like most Castaway films he adapts to living on the island, making tools for cutting and getting used to eating on what he can find. The scenery on the island was good but all through the film I kept waiting for someone else to appear in the film, they didn’t!! I like Tom Hanks but I am afraid that watching him and him alone for about an hour wandering about the island was too much for me. But for the fact I had paid for the video and ... ...So if I was castaway for 4 years and returned to find my wife remarried would I be devastated, I know I couldn’t keep the smile of my face for weeks. Or the reverse she is castaway for 4 years and someone calls with the news that she has turned up, the person giving me that news would get a serious punch in the mouth!! Anyway overall the film was average but very predictable, I found it very boring in parts and certainly couldn’t recommend ...

Advantages: Wilson the football was quite interesting Disadvantages: Tom was not
Why is this under an action and adventure category? I don't remember any? Forgive the fact this will be a short op, but there's very little to explain really!...
The Plot
--------
Tom Hanks plays a FedEx employee, who by totally uninteresting circumstances ends up in a plain crash. Uninterestingly he finds himself washed up on an uninteresting island, with no other inhabitants (although i'm sure they would have been uninteresting had there been ... ...with this film. Didn't have to shave for a few months, and while on the island only had to learn about 3 lines, all of which were spoken to his friend Wilson, who was a football. To give Wilson credit he played his part well.
The plot thickens when Tom tries to light a fire and cuts his hand. Tom eventually figures out how to light a fire. Then it was back to the dreary norm... He eventually decides he's got to get off the island, to avoid dying ...

Advantages: Atmospheric, Immersive Disadvantages: Last bit rushed
I can't remember the last film I watched that I could relate to this well. No, I've never actually spent 4 years stranded on an island with just a volleyball for company, but after watching this I've got a pretty good idea what it would be like. This is a very special film. Some people say its slow and mundane. I admit, it does take a while to get going, but from the minute the plane goes down it grabs you and doesn't let you go. The main character, ... ...an average person who is forced to change his way of thinking in a fight for survival. Hanks has very little time to introduce the character before becoming a cast away, but succeeds spectacularly. Then his acting is really shown off when he starts talking to both himself and a bloodstained volleyball called Wilson. I'm not a Tom Hanks worshipper, but its this acting that makes the film.
You can actually feel like you're there, or at least feel ...

Advantages: great acting Disadvantages: fades once back in civilisation
Castaway is a good film which manages to keep you watching despite there not being much interaction. Tom Hanks gives a performance which is more physical than anything. For most of the film his dialougue is limited and it's all about reaction and what he does for survival. He plays a fed-ex employee who is obsesses with time and quite passionate about his job. He has the devoted girlfriend and a good life. One overnight flight changes that as the ... ...ocean leaving him the only survivor. He drifts onto an island which is un-populated. The plane crash sequence is quite harrowing and certainly not advisable to watch if you have a flight in the coming weeks. For the next hour it's pure Hanks as he tries to adapt to life stranded on the island with minimal posessions. He goes back to prehistoric methods of hunting his own food, making fire and making his own primitive clothing. He also suffers many ...

Advantages: Convincing portrayal of secluded life and personal survival Disadvantages: None
Strong, visually stunning, absorbing and powerful film that leads you quietly but willingly aside one castaway's personal ordeal of life alone and the difficulties he faced just learning how to live a new solitude life. Tom Hanks has already secured his position as one of Hollwood's leading and most sought after actors, and in Robert Zemeckis's Cast Away (2000) he continues to prove his acting prowess and versatility in a film where he acts alone ... ...one man’s incredible personal survival and individual growth when everything is against him. His character portrayal of Chuck, a time-driven, motivated, workaholic is convincing and he expertly delivers his personality with ease and conviction, he comes across as a man obsessed by the clock, literally running from one business venture to another in as short a time as possible whether by plane, van, car, bike. The pace of the film in the opening ...

Castaway is a film about a man starring Tom Hanks who travels on a plane for business purposes (Fed Ex Express), however, he runs into severe weather difficulties and eventually crashes into the ocean. This must be one of the best films of all time, that centre’s around human involvement.
I’ve heard a few criticisms of this movie that I will address later in the opinion, firstly let me say Tom Hanks puts in a superb performance as the lone Fed Ex worker (Chuck Noland) who through no fault of his own gets washed up on a desert island, after the plane he was on carrying Fed Ex parcels crashes into the sea.
Anyway, when he wakes from ... ...a small, remote desert island, with nothing to his name except a pocket watch with a picture of his girlfriend (Helen Hunt) in it. But after a short time several parcels from the plane wash up on shore, he opens all of these bar one, which in his mind he intends to deliver when he gets back home, From the parcels he gets a pair of ice skates (Which he puts to excellent use.) a volley ball and some video tapes, and with these meagre possessions he ...

Advantages: Powerful film with a brilliant actor, plot and and director to match Disadvantages: People just don't seem to understand it(idiots)
Zemeckis has produced a true beauty with this film, and coming from the side of the director, it has to be said that he is one of the best out there, and this film really shows it.
Tom Hanks plays Chuck Noland, who is a systems engineer for FedEx, basically he tries to make things more efficient, and we first see him in Russia at Red Square, were we see that his life is ruled by the clock(and that he has a bad tooth), "We live and we die by the ... ...or something to that effect. He flies all around the world trying to make things work a bit faster, making sure packages take less time, and on his return to Memphis, America, we first see his girlfriend Kelly, played by Helen Hunt, who puts in a sterling performance, although she is not really in it much. At a family gathering at Christmas, we realise the extent to which Chuck is busy, as he is paged and has to fly off again, and he also receives ...

Who never dreamed a day to endorse the famous costume of Robinson Crusoe, lost in the beach of a paradisiac island, and who would spend his days to eat, leaned with a coconut, fresh coconuts, to enjoy lobsters roasted with the wood fire, to live humbly of hunting and fishing, to stroll under the palm trees and more not to think of daily worries of modern civilization? At the release of this film, the large majority of the televiewers were expected ... ...it is not this image (in extreme cases of stereotypes) which characterizes this film! And which is found quickly confronted with other material but also psychological ...

Advantages: Great effects and story Disadvantages: Regurgitated Robinson Crusoe
...suggested to me to purchase Castaway on Sky Box Office on Sunday evening, I must admit, I was a little hesitant.
Do I want to sit through 2 hours and 30 minutes of a modern Robinson Crusoe?
Well, I pressed the magic PURCHASE button and off we went. What a well spent bit of cash it was.
Castaway features Tom Hanks as a Business Tycoon in charge of Federal Express, thats right, the company that deliver your mail to far flung destinations.
He is ... ...to marry.
Days before Christmas he needs to fly away on business.
Well you can guess what happens mid flight???
This is one of the most dramatic air crash scenes I have ever witnessed on screen. My brother who works for an airline says that his flight crew have said in the past about the realism of that part of the film. Dont know how they would know! Its not like they have been in many crashes(i hope). It really strikes home the true horror of ...
