Advantages: Tom Hanks Disadvantages: Too much Tom Hanks!
The most enduring thing you will remember about this film is the fact that it is a two and a half hour advertisement for FedEx and the plane crash. This is a trailer for Tom Hanks' acting abilities and a clear intention to aim to get the team who brought us Forrest Gump another string of Oscars.
Tom plays a FedEx engineer who accompanies parcels around the world and ensures that they get to the alloted destination within the 'company promise'. The ... ...briefly at the beginning and end of the film.
After being placed on an aircraft, at Christmas, Tom settles down for an easy ride and return in time for the New Year. Unfortunately, the plane diverts around a storm in the Pacific and is forced to crash into the sea. I must say at this point that the crash sequence was quite dramatic and without being on an actual crash myself (!!) quite realistic. Tom is the only survivor who makes it to a deserted ...

I was expecting so much... the trailer was magnificent. Sure you know the whole plot from watching the teaser but hey its got to be good right? Robert Zemickes, Tom Hanks... Forrest Gump, Back to the Future, Apollo 13, Philadelphia.
The movie opens with Tom Hanks working for Fed Ex in Russia. Wow look at the Russia package handlers, watch the American belittle their abilities. Laugh at their transportation problems. Watch him fly home to the love ... ...only actress in Hollywood since she opened in What Women Want the week before and two other films this fall). Advantages: Tom Hanks is a good actor Disadvantages: Um....not much
I didn't like this film. There. I've got the interesting part of the review done now. Well, in some ways what I just said is a little like CastAway. "How?" I hear you cry (Well I think I hear you anyway) and the answer to that is that CastAway is interesting for 10 minutes and then slowly but surely becomes very dull. I'm not going to ruin the story for anyone who hasn't seen it (an easy thing to do, believe me) but the main plot goes: Man in plane ... ...the ending. Now some people may say that the beauty of this film is that Tom Hanks is on his own, on screen, for a significant length of time. Now this can work both ways for the film. It can either enhance it, as it will show the world what a great actor the subject is. Or it will ruin it due to lack of action and events. Tom Hanks is a consistently good actor and this film is no exception, however giving a great actor a dire film plot to work with ...

Advantages: Skillfully acted and directed Disadvantages: Unoriginal, and slightly unbelievable
'Cast Away' has been met with mixed reviews, with most of the anathema arising from the blatant advertising of Fed Ex. However, despite this somewhat annoying product placement, the film as a whole is an impressive work. Tom Hanks, despite his failure to win his third oscar for 'Saving Private Ryan', must have a better chance with this vintage performance. Large parts of the film have little dialogue, but this does not seem a diadvantage for Hanks, ... ...the quieter parts of the film often being much more powerful than the spoken parts. Other credit must go to the director Robert Zemeckis, for some inspired imagery and his seamless connection of one scene to the next, and indeed to Helen Hunt's remarkable screen rapport with Hanks. Overall - 6/10 ...

Advantages: A well thought out and masterfully executed piece of work. Disadvantages: Leaves you begging for answers, soit may not be for some people.
This really was another proud moment in the long line of amazing films from the living legend that is Tom Hanks.
It pretty much illustrated the evolution of man, all in a couple of hours, and I have never in my life become so emotionally attached to a small, spherical piece of inflated leather. They managed not to fall into the dangerous trap of narrating his epic survival, which could so easily have polluted this tale of man's inner journey and ... ...accurately represented, tense and gripping plane crashes ever to be seen on the big screen. However the film does ask a lot of questions, and if you like a movie with a clearly defined ending then this one may not be for you. Some may even call it slow, although you don't really expect action to come thick and fast if you're stranded on a desert island for four years.
A truelly profound evening's entertainment. ...

Chuck works out that the search party would never reach him - the area to be surveyed is over 4 times the size of Texas. The depiction of this adaption is very good, the audience to share his utter helplessness, yet also his strong will to survive so that he may once ... ...most poignant about Chuck's struggle to survive is his total isolation. Most of the film progresses without any spoken lines whatsoever, Hanks capturing the lonliness beautifully in his role. Although this is only a ball, 'Wilson' helps to alleviate the complete lonliness that the charcter feels. ...

Starring: Tom Hanks, Helen Hunt, Cristopher Noth
As a screenwriter or director, there’s little you can do with a man on a desert island. Unless a shark slithers up the beach to eat him, a nuclear bomb drops on his head or he discovers God (or possibly all three at once), you’re stuck with him learning to break open coconuts, spear fish with twigs and experience something akin to religious ecstasy when he learns how to create fire. Cue desert island which Tom escapes four years later, returning home to find his wife has married the dentist. Naturally, there’s hope in abundance. And that’s ...

Advantages: Great Effects. Solid acting. Realism. Uniqueness. Disadvantages: Ending a tad too long.
At first glance I thought the idea of Tom Hanks alone on a island with only a volley ball for company was going to be a good, never mind, rewarding film. Okay it's no modern day classic but it is an entertaining an unique film. One can imagine it was an actor's dream for Hanks, to have so much screen time to emote feelings of being lonely, in pain and going mad. Hank's character Chuck goes through a transformation in the film that is believable. ... ...starts off almost ten to twenty minutes dialouge free action. The Special Effects beat those of the terrible Perfect Storm. It left me with my mouth wide open. The ending is little overlong and doesn't match the main bulk of the film on the island but it is not as slushy as it could of been and thankgod for that, instead it is more realistic and beliveable in a sad way.
The film should be released on rental in the next month and is available on ...

Advantages: Brilliant acting from Tom Hanks Disadvantages: None that I can think of
I received this DVD as a Christmas present after seeing the movie at the cinema. It truly is an amazing film, Tom Hanks as usual shows what a diverse actor he can be.
Tom plays a character called Chuck Noland, a worker for Fedex. He lives a fairly normal life, having a girlfriend who he's set to marry and he works hard. Until one day while on a plane delivering parcels, the plane crashes into the ocean killing all the crew on board apart from Chuck.

His main diet for the first month or so is coconuts, until he masters the art of fishing. Chuck finds a few of the Fed Ex boxes washed up onto the island. Amongst them is a football who he names Wilson and Chuck sees Wilson as a companion. The story is very moving. He spends many years on the island not knowing that ...

Advantages: Original Disadvantages: Island is somewhat unauthentic
Cast Away is one of the best films I have seen in a long time. Tom Hanks stars as a Fed Ex regional manager who takes a plane journey to deliver some of his "precious" parcels. One enjoyable moment was when he had to remove a mouldly tooth with an ice skate! If you haven't already seen this then I would highly recommend this! Hanks has done well with this one! ...

Advantages: Spectacular air crash Disadvantages: overlong and unfullfilling
A modern day Robinson Crusoe affair but without the stirring music that accompanied the original TV series that was aired back in the sixties, if you can remember that!
This had all the promise of a hallmark film, especially with the extremely talented Tom Hanks playing the leading role.

The most spectacular part of the film was when the aircraft plunges from the skies and dives deep into the ocean. This was superbly filmed and left you breatheless as you watched Tom Hanks' desperate attempt to free himself from the ill-fated craft. But once on the island, life becomes as dull for the viewer as it does for him. There are some good moments, but for me, Wilson, the volleyball, who Hankd ...

The Film Cast Away, begins with a FedEx systems engeneer (Chuck) (AKA Hanks), living his life through work, being a very busy man, going across the globe to sort out problems at short notice, any time. ...comedy, and I found that Cast Away was yet another winner for him. I liked the film because it pretty much went straight into the main story, but allowed enough time to understand the stress and dedication Chuck (Tom Hanks) had for his job. Chuck has to learn to catch his food, make fire to cook his food, collect drinking water and make tools to equip his survival. Advantages: good performance from Hanks Disadvantages: thin plot
Good old Tom!
Yet another sterling performance from Mr Hanks as Fed-Ex worker who survives a plane crash only to get washed up on a deserted island in the middle of nowhere.
The film itself was good viewing but as you would expect kind of predictable in its outcome. The film trundles along a bit sometimes but Tom keeps this going well where many actors may not have done.
With the plot being kind of thin - it basically shows the highlights and ... ...he finally manages to build a boat to get him off of it.
There are some comical moments in the film as well as some quite sad ones. The film paints a good picture of what can happen to a person if they have no human contact for such a long period of time but also shows how well humans can adapt to near-alien conditions and overcome huge obstacles with time and patience.
I recommend the film to anyone, however anyone who gets easily restless may ...
