Hey Wilson, are you awake

Advantages: Great acting, Great special effects, some funny bits
Disadvantages: none

Cast Away ~~~~~~~~~~~ I love Tom Hanks movies – The movie Big, has got to be my all time favourite. I did enjoy The Green Mile and Sleepless in Seattle but this is a whole new type of movie for Hanks as he’s virtually the only actor in it for most of the movie. I rented this from Choice video and it cost me £3.00, well worth it! If you haven’t seen this movie and don’t want to know what happens then please don’t ...

Hanks in top form

Advantages: More extras than you can shake a stick at!
Disadvantages: The film itself is overlong and slow.

I brought this DVD from America on ebay and as such it is a special edition 2 disc set, as far as I know it is being released in this country at the end of October in this format. The film is a long (nearly 2.5 hours) and drawn out affair that is definitely not for action movie fans! But stick with it and you will be partially rewarded! It stars Tom Hanks as Chuck Noland who works for an american courier service Fed-ex which involves going on many ...
...Hunt) home alone. On one particular plane trip something goes wrong (it is not conclusively explained what) and the plane ends up ditching in the water killing everybody on board except for our hero Chuck who ends up being washed up on a remote island. Due to radio failure ans a change of course potential rescuers have no idea where the plane came down. The story is basically about his fight for survival and I really cannot say much else without ...

One man and his Island

Advantages: see op
Disadvantages: see op

...no conclusion. This is not. Cast Away is an excellent film which runs for over 2 hours because it need’s to. It needs this time to show you Chuck developing with his new life on the island, we need to be introduced to Wilson (yes, Wilson the friendly ball!) and see what effect Wilson has on Chuck’s life on the island, and it has a huge one, I can tell you that. This film holds a lot of character development, and we get to see Tom Hanks ...
...running his own film, being the star of the film, it’s like the Truman Show without the cameras! Tom’s acting was superb. I thought it was good in Forest Gump, but in this film he excels himself. It must be pretty hard as an actor who has played in loads of films before, but with other actors around him and on screen to just jump into a film where on screen he has no other actors at all, and all the dialogue he speaks has to be spoken ...

Robinson Crusoe Redone

Advantages: Hanks, Zemeckis, Great concept
Disadvantages: Helen Hunt

...of your worst nightmares? Cast Away starring Tom Hanks and directed by Robert Zemeckis, grapples with these issues, as it explores the life of the hero marooned on an island akin to Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe's classic novel. Tom Hanks is Chuck Noland, an executive of Fed Ex. Like any other normal modern day Joe, Chuck is perpetually time driven, harried, and on the rush. His life is in a rut of delivery, schedules, time management. And yes ...
...exhilaration and joy. Cast Away works in the way Zemeckis wonderfully uses silence and expressions to create an impact. Like in the scene, when Chuck comes back from the island, he wakes around a table laden with rich food, and he just picks them up and looks at it. The irony is wonderfully shown here, the hero had to live on a starvation diet and now when he sees the table laden with all the food, he simply cant bring himself to eat it. But what ...

Another Oscar for Hanks

Advantages: Brilliant virtuoso performance by Hanks
Disadvantages: sometimes a little slow

One of the most hyped films in recent weeks has been Tom Hanks' latest to-be-Oscar-nominated 'CAST AWAY'. I had looked forward to seeing this film since I first heard about it over a month ago and was definately NOT disappointed! Tom Hanks had purposely put on weight(for the first part of the film) and grew a real 'Grizly Adams' style beard - for the second half just for the film. I have always liked anything related to the ocean (apart from Perfect ...
...things all added to the anxiously awaiting Castaway's release. The movie was directed by Robert Zemeckis who last directed Hanks in 'Forrest Gump', of course and the actor also not only produced the film, but also had the idea for it in the first place. Anyway, onto the action. 'Cast Away' has Hanks as Chuck Nolan, a FedEx Engineer. He is very time orientated, takes his job very seriously and goes about it very much in ordered, almost military fashion. ...

...in the middle of nowhere. Cast Away is just like that, except for the fact that there is only one survivor and there are no exciting mysteries to be uncovered. You may consider watching one person trying to survive on an island as pretty dull viewing, but in fact Cast Away is extremely interesting and engrossing, as we watch the castaway come to grips with his new world. Tom Hanks is the star of the show as FedEx worker Noland, and for me gives a ...

I think the extras are pretty good, the audio commentary is particularly interesting as it tells you how particular scenes were shot and how the location was used to the best effect. There is also a rather amusing piece on Wilson the volleyball which I found quite funny. It's worth purchasing the 2 disc DVD because of these extras rather then just getting ...

Wilson stole the show.

Advantages: Brilliant performances by Hanks and Wilson
Disadvantages: yeah right

First things first - how about a best supporting actor oscar for Wilson? The volleyball Tom Hanks befriends whilst stranded on a tropical island for 4 years has taken over the crazy man on the boat in Waterworld to become my favourite character in a movie ever. WARNING - THIS OPINON REVEALS CERTAIN DETAILS OF THE PLOT OF THIS FILM. IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO KNOW THESE, PLEASE RATE IT VERY HELPFUL ANYWAY SINCE YOU CAN TAKE MY WORD FOR IT THAT IT IS. THANK ...
...know many people have dismissed this film as boring but even though Hanks only talks about once every half an hour on the island it is his ability to keep the viewer entertained that should definately be rewarded with an oscar. The story centres on a FEDex field manager (Hanks) whose plane crashes at sea and he is washed up alone on a tropical island. As the film goes on we see how Hanks copes on the island, and how his only companion is a volleyball ...

a NICE film not great but NICE

Advantages: A 'nice' film. Not great, but 'nice'.
Disadvantages: a bit slow and long

Ok, so the last time Tom Hanks teamed up with Robert Zemeckis was on the multi oscar winning 'Forrest Gump' which is most probably one of Hanks' best performances ever. As such I was expecting big things from this film despite doubts about the storyline being fairly simplistic. I'm afraid to say that I was fairly dissapointed by this film. The pace was slow throughout and I didn't think that the storyline seemed to get very far. This is a fairly ...
...half hours) which didn't leave much of an impression on me when I left the cinema. However, there is definitely a lot to praise in this film. Tom Hanks is as watchable as ever, and it seems the method acting seems to have worked. They actually made the film in two parts: for the first part Hanks got all beefed up, then Zemeckis directed 'What Lies Beneath' in the time it took Hanks to starve himself and grow a large beard. This is a very effective ...

Advantages: Compelling, Awe Inspiring, Enjoyable
Disadvantages: Absolutely None

What a fantastic film! I just can't stop watching it! Its got a fantastically gripping plot for a "desert island" movie, because theres not much you can do with a remote island, is there? The characters are well thought out and have deep personalities which help you bond with them. One thing i must say is Tom Hanks' amazing commitment to his character-he went on a 6 month diet in which he hardly ate anything for him to look "stranded". Tom Hanks ...

He spends lots of time away from home, travelling all over the world for his job (the opening credits, finds us in Moscow, following Nolan as he desperately struggles to get a consignment of parcels to the airport) He misses his partner (played by Helen Hunt) and through the little dialogue they share at the beginning they are practically unseperable. Cast Away - This should be

Advantages: Good for family enjoyment
Disadvantages: Poor plot

Having given us his preposterous What Lies Beneath, Robert Zemeckis has followed it up with a giant two hour, twenty minute advertisement for FedEx. No seriously!! Tom Hanks plays a driven, work-obsessed systems engineer for FedEx called Chuck Nolan, helping them to expand triumphantly around the globe. We see him first motivating the local hirelings in the Moscow branch - a picture of Lenin is being unscrewed from a wall in one shot – harassing ...
...Then his FedEx plane crashes and he's stranded on a desert island for four years with nothing to do but grow a very big and unattractive beard. The FedEx packages washed ashore help our Tom to survive - and even, finally, to find love. What happens when you are stranded alone, forced to survive in the wild? In real life, you grow skeletally thin, and become deeply traumatised by the solitude, unable to communicate properly for months afterwards and ...

This film provides no/to some love story, and the very fact hes on his own must have been a scary prospect for the writer, in finding his main character something to do that would be entertaining. My Man Volleyball

Advantages: Interesting one man performance
Disadvantages: Ending is anti-climatic

Firstly, if you really dislike Tom Hanks that I suggest avoiding this film as he is on screen for almost the entire film. Hanks stars at Chuck Noland, a Fed Ex employee who travels the world trying to improve his companies service in different countries. As we learn at the start of the film, he is obsessed by time and a real workaholic. He is married to Helen Hunt and before another trip across the sea, he leaves her an engagement ring with her ...
...the plane crashes (in a spectacular sequence which has to be one of the best planes crashes committed to screen) and Chuck, the only survivor, is washed up on a deserted island. The desert island is where he and the audience say for the next and largest chunk of the film. We are never shown a search or the effect on his wife so for over an hour and a half, Hanks is the only actor on screen. It's a gutsy decision for director, Robert Zemeckis to ...

Superb One Man Show

Advantages: Incredible acting, scenery, story
Disadvantages: A bit long although the time flies by; the ending could have been more

Yes, I was skeptical at first, I'll admit it. I mean, there's no denying that Tom Hanks is a wonderful actor, but, honestly, how good can a movie acted by basically one man be? I'm happy to announce that it was positively excellent. It's the story of a man leading the fast life; barely pausing to catch a breath. When his business flight goes down over the Pacific, he's forced to make the transition from the life he took for granted into a life where ...
...can't think of anyone who could've played the role better than Tom Hanks. He is so believeable, and connects to the audience emotionally. When Tom cried, I could hear the people around me sniffling; when he laughed, we all laughed along with him. Helen Hunt plays the role of his girlfriend -- a small role, but a huge basis of the movie since she's the woman he loves; a reason to live. I'm usually not too fond of Helen Hunt on the big screen, but ...

Brilliant

Advantages: Absorbing
Disadvantages: quite drawn out

I have just read an opinion on this DVD and i felt I wanted to write about this, as I have a completely different viewpoint. As always, Tom Hanks took a brilliant part, I think, with others, the film was his idea, that took a long time to become reality, but in my opinion it was well worth the wait. The plot was that the main character was involved in a plane crash and landed on a remote island, and survived there alone for four years. The opinion ...

It was a story of survival, under impossible circumstances, of battle with human will and ...
