...diplomatic relations with Vichy France. Casablanca is a place full of spies, crime and intrigue. As the gradual Nazi takeover of Europe continued refugees travelled from the major cities to Marseilles in order to go across the Mediterranean to Algeria and then to Casablanca in French Morocco. Here those who could afford it could get exit visas to Lisbon, and from Lisbon to the US. But many were forced to wait in Casablanca and some never left.

...The story is set in Casablanca in Morocco, it is a place where many French fled and Europeans to get away from the German invasions during the war. The people are also going here to get visa's so they can go to America and be safe since it is World War Two. Casablanca s a very nice place with it's markets and culture and the club owned by Rick (Humphrey Bogart)which is named Rick's. He plays a moody club owner and he never joins anyone at their table ... ...so miserable. She comes to Casablanca with her husband which is unfortunate for Rick. The reason they have come is to get visa's for America because her husband is an enemy of the Nazis and has left a camp to escape to America. She has walked into Rick's club but not on purpose and she is in as much surprise as he is. In Paris

...way, we can concentrate on Casablanca the movie, rather than Casablanca the grab-bag of pop culture references.
Humphrey Bogart, in perhaps his greatest role, is Rick, an bitter ex-pat American who now runs the imaginatively named 'Rick's' in Casablanca. Here he is kept company by the loyal, piano playing Sam (Dooley Wilson) and sporadically flirts with the corrupt chief of police Louis (Claude Rains). It is the middle of World War Two, and from ... ...desperate hope of gaining a visa to America and safety.
Things go off big style when - through sheer force of coincidence - his former lover Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) walks in. It could've been any gin joint in any town in all the world, but she walked into his...unfortunately for Rick, she is also accompanied by her husband, Laszlo (Paul Henreid), who happens to be a highly influential enemy of the Nazis.

...she wants to stay in Casablanca with the line "You must decide for the both of us". Rick decides to help Ilsa and Victor escape to America. Of course, every Nazi leader including Major Heinrich Strasser(Conrad Veidt) persue them. Rick fights the Nazis and several bad guys in this film.
In the climactic scene between Rick and Ilsa, they are at an airport, where Rick tells Ilsa she must leave for America. As Rick watches Ilsa's plane leave the airport, ... ...of a beautiful friendship".
Casablanca was the greatest Hollywood film ever made. The cast was excellent from Humphrey Bogart's Rick and Ingrid Bergman's Ilsa to the supporting cast. Of course the piano player Sam(Dooley Wilson) sings the classic "As Time Goes By". Of course Bogart gives another classic line to Sam "Play it again, Sam".
Casablanca has excellent elements from a great screenplay and snappy dialouge. The film has humor, suspense, ...

This is one great movie, possibly the greatest. Practically every shot has been aped at some time since - and that's flattery indeed.
I've watched it quite a few times now and cannot find a bad shot or dodgy line, or a glitch in any of the performances from Bogarts sublimely cool bar owner, Peter Lorre's magnificently creepy Ugarte, Claude Rains' superb police cheif, Ingrid Bergmans' radiantly beautiful Ilsa and so on. The direction (Michael Curtiz) ...

Review of Casablanca (DVD)
Advantages: Quotable lines and filmstars the way they used to be Disadvantages: Quality isn't so good anymore
...the script at all.
Casablanca is a film that is rather hard to put into any specific category. It's a romance, and it's a drama, and it's a war-story. Bogart, as most will know, runs a 'gin joint' in the port of Casablanca, aided by his black pianist, Sam, and the local French policeman, who seems entirely disinclined to enforce the local rules on gambling after-hours. Just when things are going nicely, in walks Ingrid Bergman, with whom Bogart ... ...mention the wonderful ending shot - But I won't give away the ending. Casablanca is consistently voted the best film ever made. It has humour, romance and action, so I can quite easily appreciate why. Everybody should see Casablanca at least once. It's one of those films. ...

...wrong – I will watch Casablanca again and again, and thrill to those moments in the film we all know – but can this film really be one of the best ever made? Just watch the opening, and ask yourself whether it is has quality, or does it resemble an early episode of The Saint? Yes, I know about how the director used certain techniques to draw the attention from and to certain areas, but does he really rank alongside Fellini or Bunuel? That said, I’ll ...

Maybe it was because I'd just returned from Africa the night before, maybe because I was tired and had eaten too much chocolate even for Christmas day, but this film affected me to the point of tears! I'd always avoided watching this film amongst a few select others because they seemed so full of cliches and oft-repeated one-liners, and even though those famous lines trickle out steadily in the last half hour of the film, they only serve to add meaning ... ...characters even further.
It may be an old story of hard nut has heart melted by beautiful lady only to find she does a runner cos she's already married, but I guarantee that you will end up falling for one of the leading characters yourself. Rick ("of all the bars...") is aloof and yet sexy, and the drama and sentimentality is forever in the background and often in the foreground because of the on-going war that makes everything so desperate and ...

Advantages: superb acting and great story Disadvantages: none
I cannot count the times I have watched this movie. Late one night BBC2 showed a breakdown of how each scene was seamlessly and perfectly crafted, and my admiration reached new heights. How can I describe this masterpiece?
It's a great story for the boundaries it crosses. Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) is in love with two men. The plot makes this slightly more allowable because she fell in love with Rick (Bogart) when the germans were marching into Paris ... ...When she discovers he isn't she abandons Rick without a word, and he, sunk in cynicism, flees the war to run a cafe in Casblanca. The story opens with Rick walking a fine line of tolerance but not quite co-operation with the local nazis. He clearly doesn't like them, but he will not act against them. It is clear that something or someone has jaded his view on life - and then she walks in, from his past. Little by little Rick comes to realise the ...

...deals, to try and escape Casablanca to Portugal, where they can then make their way to America and freedom. All this under the nose of a very corrupt Capt Renault, humourously played by Claude Rains.
Rick is an aloof character who maybe dreams of escaping too, but he's doing ok. That is until Ilsa (the beautiful Ingid Bergman) returns to his life. Ilsa accompanies the brave and proud Victor Lazlo (Paul Henreid), who tops the Nazi wanted list. But ... ...their presence? Why does Rick turn to drink...and could he really be that selfish as to turn a man in to the Nazis for his own benefit?
This film had me guessing all the way to the end. It also had me nodding my head going "Ahh NOW I see!" whenever I heard one of those classic lines (some call them cliches but I refuse to see it that way) of which this film gave us so many.
I was captivated by this film. When it was over I thought "Why did it take ...

Advantages: Showing Bogart and Bergman at their best Disadvantages: I know all the words by heart!
Everyone I know, knows this is my favourite film. so much so on my 40th birthday I ended up with 3 copies of the video.
A few years ago I was working in Brussels and discovered a restaurant/bar close to Place Louise called Rick's Bar. Not only did it have memorabilia of the film all around the walls, it was a great place to eat and drink a few heady Belgian beers.
Even if I know the music, and most of the dialogue off by heart, I can still happily ... ...box of tissues and watch this film all over again.
I don't care that it's was made as a propaganda film, or even that the storyline is a bit weak. It's basically a boy-meets-loses-meets-loses girl story with a bit of political intrigue, drama and a few shootings thrown in, set in wartime Morocco. Bergman is incredibly beautiful, and if you think about it, how could she ever have been attracted to Bogart's character - handsome he aint! If you've ...

...I finally decided to buy Casablanca on DVD. After watching it just once it has already become one of the most
treasured discs in my collection. The film is a masterpiece, packed with quotable lines, humour, romance and even the occasional bit of action. As for the DVD, the picture and sound are very good considering the age of the film. There is the occasional bit of compression noticeable, but this is certainly the best version available of the ... ...Bugs Bunny playing Humphrey Bogart's role. Overall, this is a fantastic film on a great disc. The age of the film may put people off, which is a shame. ...Hollywood films every Wednesday afternoon. Casablanca came along first. I, at first, didn't enjoy this film. I think this was partly because I was expecting something really incredible after all the hype. But afterwards, I went home, thought lots about it and decided that it wasn't that bad after all.
Later, I wrote an essay on the film and watched it several more times - it certainly grows on you. I am now an avid fan of Hitchcock's classic. I ... ...that the whole issue of love and jeoulousy has never changed. this makes the film very universal and it will therefore always be a classic.
