THOUGHTS ON CARRY ON CRUISING
As I watch each Norman Hudis film in turn I find it more and more difficult to find something new to say, as it always seems to be a case of 'seen it all before'. It is something we have now come to expect and Carry On Cruising is no exception.
Set on the SS Happy Wanderer this film recounts the experiences of passengers and crew on a cruise. Sid James plays the Ship's Captain and seeks nothing less than total professionalism ... ...regenerates his Sergeant role from Carry On Constable, trying in vain to run a tight ship. From the moment he first meets his new crew you know that the ride will be choppy. He tries to set his stall out early by asserting his authority, yet only succeeds in making himself look silly, as he says: "I'm going to be blunt and make some very cutting remarks!" With Kenneth Williams as Marjoribanks we get a character who this time bridges the gap between ...

I love Carry On Cruising! But it could quite easily have been another
Sergeant clone like Constable, had Norman Hudis chosen to send up the Navy. Instead he chooses to place the crew on a cruise ship which obviously gives scope for plenty of interaction between the crew and the civilian passengers, or the boys and the girls as it transpires!
Again we have a collection of misfits, this time a bunch of new crew members on Sid James well established ... ...must stress is my favourite Carry On performer. Dilys Laye is outstanding, having joined the film at just 2 or 3 days notice when Joan fell ill.
This is by far my favourite Hudis' Carry On and I'd recommend it to Carry On fans and non-Carry On fans alike! ...

Advantages: Carry on in Colour, finally!! Disadvantages: Similar to the first five
...first major watershed in the Carry on series. Last one written by Norman Hudis, the introduction of some new, familiar faces, and the brand spanking effects of colour!
First Impression
------------------------
The ultimate low budget film series shelling out on a cruise? Don't bet on it! The producers do credit P&O with their help in the film, but the fact most of the on board deck scenes are around the same area (Swimming pool and walkways around) ... ...What ensues is memorable Carry On physical comedy!
Memories
--------------
All those outlined above plus the scene in the bar where Dilys Laye and Liz Fraser join the regular drunk (Ronnie Stevens) and the barman and try most of the drinks in a matter of minutes!!
Also Kenneth Conner singing a ballad where his mind wanders(!) and he ends up serenading... well, I don't want to spoil it!
Conclusion
-----------------
An entertaining entry into ...

Advantages: entertaining, well acted Disadvantages: some of the regulars are missing
Carry On Cruising was made in 1962 & was the last one to be written by Norman Hudis & the first one in colour ! This one is set - you might have guessed ! - on a boat, captained by Sid James. Kenneth Williams & Kenneth Connor form part of his crew, but many of the other regulars - Hattie Jacques, Joan Sims, Charles Hawtrey - are absent for this one.
Instead we have Lance Percival as the chef, fitting in well with the rest of the cast, with the glamour ...

Advantages: Light hearted film Disadvantages: Some of the top cast members are missing
Carry On Cruising is the 6th film in this series and the first one in colour. It was released in 1962. The cast includes Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Liz Frazer, Dilys Laye, Esma Cannon and Lance Percival.
As the title suggests this film is set on a ship. Sid James plays the Captain on the luxury cruise liner S.S. Happy Wanderer who tries in vain to keep control on his passengers and staff alike.
Carry On Cruising sees the smooth running of the ... ...and misadventures.
One of my favourite parts of the film is where Kenneth Willaims tries in a desperate attempt to impress the Captain, by playing a game of table tennis with the delightful Esma Cannon. Esma quickly takes to the game and gives Williams a run for his money. Williams decides to put in more effort in order to try a last ditch attempt at winning the game. In doing so, he whacks the ball which ends up in the Captain's mouth. Esma's reaction ...
