...success of the hilarious classic, Carry On Cleo (1964)(one of the very best out of all 31 Carry On films made), director Gerald Thomas and producer Peter Rogers decided another parody was what was needed to keep the series vital and alive. Written by Talbot Rothwell, the team came up with another one of their ultimate entries in the series with Carry On Cowboy (1965). There was always a loose structure to the plot in most Carry On films but with ... ...comic misunderstanding (this is a Carry On film after all) ends up being sent a sanitary engineer with the laughably named Marshall P. Knutt (Jim Dale) who is accident-prone from the word go! Luckily for him, help is at hand in the shape of the volatile Annie Oakley (Angela Douglas) who turns up at Stodge City seeking revenge on her fathers murderer who just so happens to be the Rumpo Kid! The merry, loveable Carry On gang all take on surprisingly ...

THOUGHTS ON CARRY ON COWBOY
At the height of its parody of cinematic styles (Espionage and Period styles previously and Hammer Horror to come), Carry on Cowboy attempts to laugh at the Spaghetti Westerns of the 1950's/1960's. Set in Stodge City, a small town in the mid-west, Carry On Cowboy tells the story of Johnny Finger, alias The Rumpo Kid (Sid James) and his power-driven terrorisation of Stodge, and his seduction of the women therein. Judge ... ...is quite threatening for a Carry On film. This is offset by an entertaining performance by Jim Dale and a sultry one by Joan Sims. Charles Hawtrey is simply a scrawny bundle of fun. The unreality of an English-accented native American wearing gold-rimmed spectacles and having a dislike for fighting, makes Hawtrey's character extra-special, and he saunters through the film with ease - a wonderful Indian camp! Peter Butterworth makes a welcome introduction ...

Advantages: Sid James shows his versatility Disadvantages: Some of the characters are awful
Carry On Cowboy was made in 1965 & was the team's chance to get to play cowboys & indians ! I really can't stand Westerns, so this put me off a bit, but the Carry On team did a pretty good job overall.
Sid James & Angela Douglas are the stars of the film for me, with Sid playing Johnny Finger / The Rumpo Kid very convincingly, proving what a good actor he really was. Angela Douglas provides a touch of glamour as Annie Oakley, but also gets to do ... ...!
Unfortunately, there are some drawbacks to the film. Bernard Bresslaw's huge talents are wasted as Little Heap, with Charles Hawtrey only coming off a bit better as Big Heap. Kenneth Williams is also irritating as Judge Burke.
So it has its faults, but it's pretty good & is worth watching. ...
