...my top ten musical faves, Calamity Jane starring Doris Day and Howard Keel. Take me back to the Black Hills, oh well if not .......take me back to the innocent days when films such as this were hot news, back to the days of the l950s and especially l953 when this film was made. ...of my real favourites is Calamity Jane starring Doris Day and Howard Keel which was made in 1953 so it is actually a year older than I am! The story of the film is loosely based on the life of Martha Jane Cannary-Burke with her name Cannary eventually getting changed to Calamity possibly to match her tomboy tendencies. The film starts with a lively song 'The Deadwood stage', which sees Calamity arrive back in Deadwood from Chicago. ...with a great imagination. Calamity Jane has got to be one of the best musicals ever made. Watch as she brings in the Deadwood stage all the way from Chicagy (chicago) full of passengers and with the help of driver "Rattle Snake". Having first watched Calamity Jane when I was probably about 16, so eight years ago, I have loved it ever since. It tells the story of Calamity Jane, and WilBill Hickock, and while the writers definitely took major liberties with the historical aspects of the film, it's a thoroughly entertaining way to spend a couple of hours. An excellent tale of a cowgirl who leaves her small town to visit Chicago and brings back the very ladylike Katie to star at the local theatre.
