In the screen adaptation of BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY, Helen Fielding's international best-selling phenomenon, documentary filmmaker (and real-life inspiration for the character...
more...Shazzer) Sharon Maguire has managed a rare feat - a film as captivating as the novel. Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is a pretty and neurotic thirtysomething singleton (in her vernacular) who vows to take control of her life after being humiliated by handsome, standoffish barrister, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at her parents' New Year's party. Determined to lose weight and cut back on vices like wine, cigarettes, and workaholic-alcoholic-misogynistic men, Bridget begins a diary to chart her progress. Unfortunately, the P.R. executive hits a snag when her boss, gorgeous cad Daniel (Hugh Grant) instigates a sexy e-mail flirtation. Despite her tendency to bungle book launch parties, and any situation involving the ever-present, ever-disapproving Mark Darcy, Bridget's winning combination of charm, vulnerability, and wit intrigues not only the seductively dangerous Daniel, but also the arrogant barrister. Featuring a note-perfect performance by Zellweger, a devilishly against-type one by Grant, and the inspired casting of Firth (the object of Bridget's lusty fantasies in the book); DIARY is a clever, delightful romantic comedy guaranteed to please old fans and win new ones.

Review of Bridget Jones's Diary DVD by WillKnn

Advantages: It's Very Funny, Star Performances from Renée Zellweger and Hugh Grant
Disadvantages: Slow in parts

...the perfect man. Okay sums Bridget up perfectly. Never read the book, never knew it existed although knew the name Bridget Jones from somewhere but like usual can never put my finger on it. Renée Zellweger, know her, was in love with her for a short period of time (yes I admit it) she is cute and for once we have an American who can actually (almost) pull off being british which let’s face it the rest of the population want to be…right? ... Keep up with the Joneses
Review of Bridget Jones's Diary DVD by Karaoke_James

Advantages: Great central performance from Renee Zellweger, A main character the audience can genuinely empathise with
Disadvantages: The inclusion of Geri Halliwell's 'It's Raining Men'

...and ever so slightly neurotic Bridget Jones. The movie begins at a New Years party at the house of Bridget's parents, where she makes some resolutions. Namely, to cut down on the cigarettes, to get her body into shape and to find herself a decent boyfriend. Now in her early thirties, Bridget has been quite successful with her career - she has a good job with a publishing company. She also has an attractive flat in London and a good circle of friends. ... Read review

Review of Bridget Jones's Diary DVD by Zoe

Advantages: er...
Disadvantages: it's only 97 minutes long

...came from us laughing at Bridget with her calorie and Marlboro Light counting and her Mr. Darcy obsession. The dichotomy of such an inane column in a relatively highbrow newspaper was funny. Just so you know there was a point when this gag worked. Then came the books, essentially a collection of Fielding's columns. This too had some merit and due to a fluke of timing became hit beyond all proportion. 'Chick lit' (my most hated phrase of all time) ... Read review

the trailer doesn't do it justice
Review of Bridget Jones's Diary DVD by corman

Advantages: acting, script, and a bit to close to the truth of all of us at some points!
Disadvantages: none

...(of Jerry Macguire fame) is Bridget Jones. 32 going on 33, single, looking for a man, wine-swigging, chain smoking, neurotic and not exactly in her ideal job. Sound familiar? Any female over the age of 25 will find at least one thing in common with Bridget, and we've all done at least one of the things that she manages to blunder her way into during the film. There were quite a few guys in the audience as well, who also laughed (not just a chick flick), ... Read review

...cast Renée Zellweger (Jerry Maguire) as Bridget Jones. Hugh Grant (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, and every other sodding film ever made) as Daniel Cleaver. Colin Firth (Shakespeare in Love, The English Patient and the BBCs' Pride and Prejudice) as Mark Darcy (obviously likes playing Mr Darcys ;-) ) The story Bridget Jones is a fictitious character, brain-child of Independent newspaper columnist, Helen Fielding. ... Disadvantages: They've waited this long to make the next one!

...Diary' stars Renee Zellweger, as Bridget Jones, Hugh Grant, as Daniel Cleaver, Bridget Jones's Boss and potential Love Interest, and Colin Firth, as Mark Darcy, Bridget's other potential love interest. The film feature fantastic performaces from these actors, as well as other characters, who are also portrayed fantastically! ...not happening”. Each time Bridget Jones manages to end up in the most impossible situations, like serving blue soup to her friends. It’s so implausible, that it isn’t funny anymore. Anyway, it’s possible you had a good laugh, but I hated it! Acting (4/5) -------- Let’s not slate it entirely, the acting was without a doubt good: - Renée Zellweger really does her best to be a “Bridget Jones”-type woman, ... Read review

Review of Bridget Jones's Diary DVD by emilystobbs

Advantages: great fight scenes, funny
Disadvantages: bad english accent

...In this extreme circumstance Bridget Jones was favourable. Oh I hate the way that everyone else was right- the film was actually very good and very funny. Renneé Zellweger (excuse my spelling) was a fantastic Bridget Jones (although the put-on English accent was really irritating) and Colin Firth and Hugh Grant were brilliant supporting actors. If anyone doesn't know by now, Bridget Jones is a 32 year-old single woman and the film follows the incidents ... Read review

...opinions will know, I adore Bridget Jones. She’s toe-curlingly embarrassing, neurotic and very very funny. The books make me laugh out loud (not very handy when you’re reading in bed and Darling Hubby is trying to sleep!!) and I was so looking forward to seeing the movie adaptation; I hadn’t been this excited since Christmas (and there wasn’t a turkey curry buffet in sight, thank God!!) Review of Bridget Jones's Diary DVD by utero

Advantages: funny, good acting
Disadvantages: nothing new

...2 hours since I saw Bridget Jones Diary and I feel I must share my opinion on it. I am a man of 22 years and haven't read the book this film was based on. The character of Bridget Jones is someone that women can relate to a lot better then men. But even so I enjoyed the movie a great deal. We meet Bridget (Zellwegger), a thirty-something woman who's search for a man has been empty for a few years. She's a chain-smoking, booze drinking girl ... Read review

Bridget Jones - hilarious
Review of Bridget Jones's Diary DVD by Blondieg83

Advantages: Incredibly funny
Disadvantages: A lot missed out from the book

...Of Film: About 93mins The film Bridget Jones’s Diary is from the book of the same name written by Helen Fielding. I would certainly recommend reading the book first before seeing the film as it is more detailed and quite a lot of the plot is lost in the film. Main Cast: Bridget Jones – Renee Zellweger Daniel Cleaver – Hugh Grant Mark Darcy – Colin Firth Bridget Jones is a thirty something ‘singleton’ living in London who smokes like ... Read review

Not just for the ladies
Review of Bridget Jones's Diary DVD by Nameless

Advantages: Funny and good to watch
Disadvantages: Lots of girlie moments

Bridget Jones Diary has been classed as the ultimate chick flick, so as a guy you can imagine the horror look on my face when I arrived at the cinema, expecting to see a totally different film only to be told the tickets for said diary film were already purchased. I consoled myself with a vast quantity of chocolate from the kiosk and went into the auditorium. After the trailers (which I was looking forward to more than the film) it began, and I ... ...the large red diary that Bridget (Renee Zellweger) is frequently reading/writing. Moreover, the diary is very nearly her ultimate downfall as she negotiates her way through a complicated series events, most of which seem to involve her (eventually ex-)boss, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) and Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). But still, the difficulty with the underlying diary form is finding a way to sustain the dramatic movement and intensity. The film is ... Read review
