In the screen adaptation of BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY, Helen Fielding's international best-selling phenomenon, documentary filmmaker (and real-life inspiration for the character...
more...Shazzer) Sharon Maguire has managed a rare feat - a film as captivating as the novel. Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is a pretty and neurotic thirtysomething singleton (in her vernacular) who vows to take control of her life after being humiliated by handsome, standoffish barrister, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at her parents' New Year's party. Determined to lose weight and cut back on vices like wine, cigarettes, and workaholic-alcoholic-misogynistic men, Bridget begins a diary to chart her progress. Unfortunately, the P.R. executive hits a snag when her boss, gorgeous cad Daniel (Hugh Grant) instigates a sexy e-mail flirtation. Despite her tendency to bungle book launch parties, and any situation involving the ever-present, ever-disapproving Mark Darcy, Bridget's winning combination of charm, vulnerability, and wit intrigues not only the seductively dangerous Daniel, but also the arrogant barrister. Featuring a note-perfect performance by Zellweger, a devilishly against-type one by Grant, and the inspired casting of Firth (the object of Bridget's lusty fantasies in the book); DIARY is a clever, delightful romantic comedy guaranteed to please old fans and win new ones.

so what was in the other diary
Review of Bridget Jones's Diary DVD by naryan1

Advantages: cute, funny and downright easy eye candy.
Disadvantages: why do all films based in britain have to feature a damn MINI?

...this week were empathizing with Bridget and in sync with the movie every step of the way. But the film also shows the hand of her co-writer, Richard Curtis, who gives it some of the sophisticated irony of his "Four Weddings and a Funeral," and the script otherwise strikes so many universal chords that the men in the audience were enjoying it almost as much. The first-time director is Sharon Maguire, whose background is in television documentaries ... Read review

Best film of the year so far
Review of Bridget Jones's Diary DVD by GR-Design

Advantages: n/a
Disadvantages: n/a

Bridget Jone’s Diary, probably the biggest film this year (so far!) and a film that I wasn’t really all that interested in seeing, but my girlfriend did (always the way isn’t it fellas!). So, I went to see it with my girlfriend earlier this week and must say that even though I thought I wasn’t going to like it, I was very impressed! Bridget Jone’s Diary is all about Bridget (hey you would never had guessed that if ... Read review

Review of Bridget Jones's Diary DVD by Ork1927

Advantages: Very funny. Good Adaption
Disadvantages: Nothing Really

...immediately hate each other and Bridget turns to her smooth and smarmy boss, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) and embarks on a turbulent relationship which all ends in tears. Bridget changes her job to becomes a TV presenter and then has to choose between Darcy and Cleaver while her group of friends look on and offer advice that ranges from useless to extremely foul mouthed. Oh, she has to get her parents back together as well. As you can see, this ... Read review

Review of Bridget Jones's Diary DVD by ickle_devil

Advantages: brilliant, funny, perfect cast
Disadvantages: none, well differs a little form the book

...and all attempts to watch Bridget Jones’s Diary just didn’t happen. Therefore when it came to going to see hits or going to work I opted for the cinema. I wanted to see the film, but am not a ‘chick flick’ kind of girl and this put me off a little bit. The Cast… Renee Zellweager – Bridget Jones is a woman in her 30’s who is a little insecure, ok a lot insecure, and has a problem with keeping new years ... Read review

There's Hope Yet
Review of Bridget Jones's Diary DVD by Eudora

Advantages: funny, easy to follow, faithful to the book, British
Disadvantages: Lack of a substantial and engrossing story line, rather predictable

...have any great expectations about Bridget Jones’s Diary and so I didn’t come away feeling disappointed. Renee Zellweger (Jerry Maguire, 1996) stars as the thirty-something single woman, tired of her present life and eager to find new excitement, in particular an ‘extraordinary’ relationship. It’s the same old story, borne straight out of the ‘Does my bum look big in this?’ Arabella Weir literary tradition ... Read review

I have never laughed so much in a cinema
Review of Bridget Jones's Diary DVD by arcadionseyes

Advantages: funny, funny, funny, funny, at times touching
Disadvantages: erm?

...have never read Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones's(that's how they spell it!) Diary, but after seeing this film, I think I will make it my business to do so. I was expecting something, how could you not? Every other person has been willing to sing its praises, but after Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill, I wasn't expecting to laugh that much. The funniest film in cinema I have seen was Something about Mary, but this film is funnier by a thousand ... Read review

Bridget Jones's Diary Movie Review
Review of Bridget Jones's Diary DVD by michaelcrook

Advantages: Incredibly funny and surprising better than the book.
Disadvantages: Slightly longer than the average comedy.

...in the life of thirty-something Bridget from her perspective through the writing of her diary. We get to experience every ounce of Bridget's thoughts and each one is an absolute comedy gem. The best aspect of the film is the huge range of characters, though it must be remembered that at all times we are seeing things through the eyes of Bridget. There's the nasty 'Daniel Cleaver' who Bridget can't resist and then there's all round nice bloke 'Mark ... Read review

Wanton Sex Godess
Review of Bridget Jones's Diary DVD by fairydust

Advantages: easy to relate to the character, very funny in a cringeful way
Disadvantages: the lovely english accents

...add my contribution to the Bridget Jones opinion craze! Having paid a visit to the cinema last night, i would definetly recommend each and everyone of you go and see this film. No, its not a cinematic masterpiece, and perhaps the accents are a little too 'English', but this film is light hearted, and has inspired me to go out and make sure i do all those mad things (ie running down a snowy street in a pair of leopard print knickers and little else!) ... Advantages: Hilarious!, Good acting/actors
Disadvantages: None really!

...story line! Renee Zellweger (aka Bridget Jones) plays the part of an English thirtysomething year old office type lady, come singleton diarist who is looking for her ideal man. That is basically ya lot! Sounds pretty boring right!? Well your wrong!! It amazed me just how much there was to the story line considering what ive just told you there is basically the entire plot! Considering its a 96 minute film! Basically it starts off with Bridget ... Read review

Advantages: Three excellent performances. Witty dialogue. Nice romantic comedy. Good soundtrack.
Disadvantages: Nothing like the book (apparently)

...about this amazing book called Bridget Jones' Diary that every woman has read. True, I had never even heard of it and was unsure about seeing a movie based on a book about men being bastards. However, I got dragged along to see this movie and must say that I rather enjoyed it. The movie covers a year in the life of Bridget Jones, a lonely thirty-something who, after years of being single, decides to write a diary to record her efforts of finding ... Read review

Advantages: close your eyes and listen to the songs - they do better alone, Hugh Grant acts
Disadvantages: patronising, no real want for her to suceed - despite the attempts, weakly scripted, chick flick (althoug it does try)

Movie of the month - Bridget Jones Diary. The sad thing is that I`ll have to hear about this cack flick for a while to come. I`m dreading its release on DVD, video, sky, tv - why? Answer is - because I`ll be reminded that I went and wasted 2 hrs of my life watching it. Why you should listen to me... Bridget Jones a very funny film
Review of Bridget Jones's Diary DVD by jacksonandy

Advantages: Well made - funny - British
Disadvantages: More of the same from Mr.Grant

...dubious character and womanising, so Bridget obviously has a relationship with him. She has the habit of doing and saying the wrong thing at exactly the worst time, I cringed inside on a number of occasions, feeling really sorry for her, the highlights in her performance were the speech at the ruby wedding party and her resignation speech. And would you believe even the old fancy dress party joke worked brilliantly – anyone who makes that funny gets ... Read review

...year in the life of Bridget Jones, she is a little ‘pudgy’ not over weight just well rounded, she is without a man, smokes, drinks and is on a permanent yet at the same time none existent diet. Basically the film tracks Bridget’s involvement with two men, the childhood friend and the office hunk. The humiliations of Bridget Jones
Review of Bridget Jones's Diary DVD by IsabelleMcQT

Advantages: quite a laugh
Disadvantages: too many excruciatingly cringeworthy scenes

...have not read the book Bridget Jones' Diary, and I think the film is enhanced by having read it. Knowledge of the book fills in background to the film, making it more believable - for one thing, Bridget in the film comes across as a bit of a loser, whereas I'm told in the book she is shown to be immensely witty, which would explain why two handsome men are in love with her. OK this film did make me laugh, but it's been a couple of weeks since I ... Read review

...year in the life of Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger), a thirty something spinster whose prospects of finding a man in her life appear quite slight! The film starts at a New Year's Day party which her parents take her to, where they are determined to match her up with the hosts' son, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth).
