In the screen adaptation of BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY, Helen Fielding's international best-selling phenomenon, documentary filmmaker (and real-life inspiration for the character...
more...Shazzer) Sharon Maguire has managed a rare feat - a film as captivating as the novel. Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is a pretty and neurotic thirtysomething singleton (in her vernacular) who vows to take control of her life after being humiliated by handsome, standoffish barrister, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at her parents' New Year's party. Determined to lose weight and cut back on vices like wine, cigarettes, and workaholic-alcoholic-misogynistic men, Bridget begins a diary to chart her progress. Unfortunately, the P.R. executive hits a snag when her boss, gorgeous cad Daniel (Hugh Grant) instigates a sexy e-mail flirtation. Despite her tendency to bungle book launch parties, and any situation involving the ever-present, ever-disapproving Mark Darcy, Bridget's winning combination of charm, vulnerability, and wit intrigues not only the seductively dangerous Daniel, but also the arrogant barrister. Featuring a note-perfect performance by Zellweger, a devilishly against-type one by Grant, and the inspired casting of Firth (the object of Bridget's lusty fantasies in the book); DIARY is a clever, delightful romantic comedy guaranteed to please old fans and win new ones.

BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY (2001) [FILM ONLY REVIEW]
Review of Bridget Jones's Diary (Wide Screen) by Charles_Strickland

Advantages: Renee Zellweger
Disadvantages: Limp translation of book to film

Sharon Maguire's BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY was released in 2001 after phenomenal success from Helen Fielding's book, as if anyone needs telling, of the same name. The book is an immensely enjoyable read, a book that throws you head first into someone else's secret diary of a life you can't help but squirm to as you relate to it all. The film, then, was much anticipated. Bridget Jones is a thirty-onwards year old London disaster area. There should be ... Read review

...woman called -you guessed it- Bridget Jones. She decides, after realising how sad her life is to change it for the better. She proposes to go on a diet, stop smoking, stop drinking and find a man (not too much to ask then!), she starts a diary to record her progress in- which is why the film is called Bridget Jones's Diary. I don't want to spoil the film for any people who haven't watched it yet by saying what happens, so I won't- I’ll just ... Read review

Makes a change from laughing at me
Review of Bridget Jones's Diary (Wide Screen) by Saltire

Advantages: Amusing comic escapism
Disadvantages: If you're picky, not the best adaptation of the book possible. My 4 star rating is because I like my films to be perfect (I'm fussy like that)!

...been a fan of the Bridget Jones diaries from first appearing as a feature in the Independent through to the Edge of Reason, I couldn't really miss out on the opportunity to see the film. Having read the critics reviews, I was unsure as to what to expect. Apparently it was a "good film, but not for the die-hards". The challenge was set, so off I went. I was initially worried as to the overall girlieness of the film. Although I am a girly, I'm not ... Read review

Have You Met Miss Jones....
Review of Bridget Jones's Diary (Wide Screen) by nicanddarrell

Advantages: Funny, witty and enjoyable
Disadvantages: Ummm, I have tried I can find none

... For the uninitiated amongst you, Bridget Jones was created by author Helen Fielding, and brought to life on the big screen by American actress Renee Zellwegger. Bridget is a single thirtysomething, obsessed with her weight, quitting drinking and smoking, but mostly with finding Mr Right. In order to try and find some order in her life, she has started to keep a diary to record the events in her life, hence the title of the film. As the film progresses, ... Read review

British splendour, spunk and stiff upper lips
Review of Bridget Jones's Diary (Wide Screen) by dave27

Advantages: Everything
Disadvantages: Nah

...the case of the marvellous Bridget Jones's Diary it was all justified, completely and utterly justified ... because this film is quite simply immense in a very minute and bijou way. You've all heard the bit about the big pants and the fireman's pole and the nether parts of Ms Zellweger's famous body, and doubtless this film has been seen by the vast majority of you discerning readers out there, because it was immensely popular, but sadly I missed ... Review of Bridget Jones's Diary (Wide Screen) by moose

Advantages: Believable, very easy to watch, Hugh Grant!
Disadvantages: Quite short in length (95 minutes)

...roughly knows the outline. Bridget Jones is 32, single with a dead end job in publishing. Her diary takes us through the day to day life of a single, very average thirty-something. This doesn't make it dull though! No way! This film is something every female should see - and I guarantee that they will see something of themselves in Bridget (my title gives that something in my life away!!!). Bridget (Renee Zellweger) is addicted to smoking, drinking ... Read review

...Maguire, behind the scenes featurette, Bridget Jones Articles featurette, Deleted scenes and two music videos. All of which are pretty good in my opinion. Now for those who don't know anything about this film, it stars Renee Zellweger an American actress who had to put on weight to star in this film. I thought she actually looked better than she does today (having lost all of the weight she put on and more!), Hugh Grant (who I don't like at all) ... Read review

Advantages: Very very funny.
Disadvantages: Support group left in the background.

...everyone should have heard of Bridget Jones, if you didn’t read the first or second book and haven’t seen the movie then you must be male or an alien species that has just arrived on the planet. As regular readers of my stuff will know, I recently scored higher on a corporate gender balance test than all of the females at my management level. Higher on the female side that is! ...is very pleasing indeed. Yes Bridget Jones's Diary is a success, and I don’t just mean financial wise either, its clocked up a £7m total here in the UK already making it the ninth highest grossing opener ever. Bridget Jones is also a success because it does what its supposed to do, make you laugh, and with Richard Curtis at the helm of writing the film it means you'll laugh a lot, with him being responsible for Four Weddings, Notting Hill, ... 30 and Single, Isn't Life Great
Review of Bridget Jones's Diary (Wide Screen) by JayHall1991

Advantages: Brilliantly Funny and Well Actedh
Disadvantages: All Males Stereo Typed

...to cynical for all that, Bridget is completely naive, but also desperate to have a life, that deep down inside, she doesn’t believe she can have. All these imperfections make for a very endearing heroine. The fact that Bridget has imperfections, (unlike any role Meg Ryan has played, although I love her as an actress) makes her more human and likable basically. Also these movies, aimed at a 30 something female audience, assigns all men as lying, unfaithful ... Read review

Review of Bridget Jones's Diary (Wide Screen) by kellyv43

Advantages: very funny
Disadvantages: none

Bridget Jones Diary was a film that everyone was talking about a few years ago. I couldn't wait to see it. I first went to see it at the cinema when it first came out and laughed almost all the way through, it was very funny. I waited patiently for the film to be released on video or DVD to buy, and when it was it became my very first DVD. This is a film based on the best selling book by Helen Fielding. It is made by the makers of Nottinghill and ... Read review

Review of Bridget Jones's Diary (Wide Screen) by Sam-Hay

Advantages: Excellent film, extremely funny, as good as the book
Disadvantages: None

...anyone who's never heard of Bridget Jones, where have you been for the past few years?! Bridget Jones is a neurotic 30-something "singleton" - or in Bridget's words, a 'spinster'. She has to cope with "smug marrieds" asking why she's not married yet and her mum trying to fix her up with her friend's son, Mark. The diary in the title follows Bridget's life over the space of a year. In the book (from which the film was adapted), each entry in ... Read review

...author. - The Plot So who is Bridget Jones? Well, she's a 32 year old woman working for a publishing firm in London. She's shy, a bit clumsy and flustered (especially under pressure), she 'says things without any thought for the consequences' and, above all, she's single. And she hates this. In fact, from what I can tell, she embodies all the traits women most hate about themselves – she's neurotic, obsessed with her weight, drinks too much, ... Read review
