Advantages: Renee Zellweger Disadvantages: Limp translation of book to film
Sharon Maguire's BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY was released in 2001 after phenomenal success from Helen Fielding's book, as if anyone needs telling, of the same name. The book is an immensely enjoyable read, a book that throws you head first into someone else's secret diary of a life you can't help but squirm to as you relate to it all. The film, then, was much anticipated.
Bridget Jones is a thirty-onwards year old London disaster area. There should be ...

She proposes to go on a diet, stop smoking, stop drinking and find a man (not too much to ask then!), she starts a diary to record her progress in- which is why the film is called Bridget Jones's Diary.
I don't want to spoil the film for any people who haven't watched it yet by saying what happens, so I won't- I’ll just ...

...been a fan of the Bridget Jones diaries from first appearing as a feature in the Independent through to the Edge of Reason, I couldn't really miss out on the opportunity to see the film. Having read the critics reviews, I was unsure as to what to expect. Apparently it was a "good film, but not for the die-hards". The challenge was set, so off I went.
I was initially worried as to the overall girlieness of the film. Although I am a girly, I'm not ...

For the uninitiated amongst you, Bridget Jones was created by author Helen Fielding, and brought to life on the big screen by American actress Renee Zellwegger. Bridget is a single thirtysomething, obsessed with her weight, quitting drinking and smoking, but mostly with finding Mr Right. In order to try and find some order in her life, she has started to keep a diary to record the events in her life, hence the title of the film.
As the film progresses, ...

...the case of the marvellous Bridget Jones's Diary it was all justified, completely and utterly justified ... because this film is quite simply immense in a very minute and bijou way.
You've all heard the bit about the big pants and the fireman's pole and the nether parts of Ms Zellweger's famous body, and doubtless this film has been seen by the vast majority of you discerning readers out there, because it was immensely popular, but sadly I missed ...

...roughly knows the outline. Bridget Jones is 32, single with a dead end job in publishing. Her diary takes us through the day to day life of a single, very average thirty-something. This doesn't make it dull though! No way! This film is something every female should see - and I guarantee that they will see something of themselves in Bridget (my title gives that something in my life away!!!).

Now for those who don't know anything about this film, it stars Renee Zellweger an American actress who had to put on weight to star in this film. I thought she actually looked better than she does today (having lost all of the weight she put on and more!), Hugh Grant (who I don't like at all) ...

...everyone should have heard of Bridget Jones, if you didn’t read the first or second book and haven’t seen the movie then you must be male or an alien species that has just arrived on the planet. As regular readers of my stuff will know, I recently scored higher on a corporate gender balance test than all of the females at my management level. Higher on the female side that is! This was a revelation to me but a point of hilarity for all ...

Yes Bridget Jones's Diary is a success, and I don’t just mean financial wise either, its clocked up a £7m total here in the UK already making it the ninth highest grossing opener ever. Bridget Jones is also a success because it does what its supposed to do, make you laugh, and with Richard Curtis at the helm of writing the film it means you'll laugh a lot, with him being responsible for Four Weddings, Notting Hill, ...

...to cynical for all that, Bridget is completely naive, but also desperate to have a life, that deep down inside, she doesn’t believe she can have. All these imperfections make for a very endearing heroine. The fact that Bridget has imperfections, (unlike any role Meg Ryan has played, although I love her as an actress) makes her more human and likable basically. Also these movies, aimed at a 30 something female audience, assigns all men as lying, unfaithful ...

Bridget Jones Diary was a film that everyone was talking about a few years ago. I couldn't wait to see it. I first went to see it at the cinema when it first came out and laughed almost all the way through, it was very funny. I waited patiently for the film to be released on video or DVD to buy, and when it was it became my very first DVD.

...anyone who's never heard of Bridget Jones, where have you been for the past few years?!
Bridget Jones is a neurotic 30-something "singleton" - or in Bridget's words, a 'spinster'. She has to cope with "smug marrieds" asking why she's not married yet and her mum trying to fix her up with her friend's son, Mark.
The diary in the title follows Bridget's life over the space of a year. In the book (from which the film was adapted), each entry in ...

- The Plot
So who is Bridget Jones? Well, she's a 32 year old woman working for a publishing firm in London. She's shy, a bit clumsy and flustered (especially under pressure), she 'says things without any thought for the consequences' and, above all, she's single. And she hates this. In fact, from what I can tell, she embodies all the traits women most hate about themselves – she's neurotic, obsessed with her weight, drinks too much, ...
