Advantages: Lots of colour, Insight to Indian culture, Lead characters make nice eye candy, Great scenes in India, America, London and Goa Disadvantages: Weak plotline, wooden acting, too many songs.
This is a modern day adaptation of the Jane Austen classic 'Pride and Prejudice'. I can not possibly comment on how it compares to the original as I have not read it or seen the adaptation of the original, but I can certainly share my thoughts and experiences of it.
The film is directed by British Asian director Gurinder Chadha, who received much critical acclaim for her hit film 'Bend It Like Beckham' two years ago. Due to the success of Bend It ... ...my opinion, the film failed to meet those expectations. (Ironically, my first review on Ciao was on 'Bend It Like Beckham'!)
The plot focuses on Lalita, played by the stunning Aishwariya Rai who makes her debut into the mainstream cinema with this film. Lalita is an intelligent, educated, proud Indian girl living with her parents in Amritsar, India. Lalita's mother is a very enthusiastic matchmaker, who is keen to find wealthy husbands who are preferably ...

The upcoming nuptials has the Bakshi family go to LA for the festivities, and wouldn’t you know it, the wedding is to be held at one of Will’s hotels, and sparks begin to fly more noticeably between him and Lalita, until he upsets her once again. Finally though, Lucky is returned safely, Jaya and Balraj are reunited, and Lalita and Will fall in love with each other, and presumably, live happily ever after. The sad thing is, the movie sounds great on paper, but in reality, it falls far short of expectations. The script should work marvelously well with the Indian setting, but that gets lost in the East-meets-West conflict that drives the script instead. Chada ...

Advantages: Light and entertaining, colourful and vibrant, gives a light insight into Indian culture Disadvantages: If you don't like musicals, don't go
Bollywood bonanza. This film reminded me so much of the wonderful musicals we used to see, West Side Story, My Fair Lady and the like. My husbands face when they started singing in the street was a picture! Half way into the film the fire alarms went off in the Cinema and I found myself, with hubby and his youngest daughter (12) outside on the pavement discussing whether we should go back in, or leave. What’s to discuss? Louise and I just had to ... ...wanted to know how it ended. Decision made and hubby reluctantly made his way back to his seat.
I offer a totally unbiased review of the film as I was totally unaware at the time that this was an adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice”. Not that this fact would have made a difference, I have never read Pride and Prejudice and so judge this film on its merit and not against something which has gone before.
What drew me to see it was my ...

Well i will start by saying you have got to go and see this! Its been out for 3 days and ive seen it twice- and its just got better.
Its written and produced by Gurinder Chadha (same gal who did Bend it Like Beckham) and is just as cool.

If you ... ...of the film which can be improved on in order to make it a bollywood masterpiece. First criticism I'll have to make was what happened to the singing?? It was all done through voice overs and everyone sounded identical. I know alot of bollywood movies are made in this way but if it was to be a true musical surely they can sing rather than mime.
Another one would be you'd get really into the story then suddenly out of the blue we'll get a song/dancing. ...

...rightly called the global village.
Bride and prejudice is an adaptation as well as an inspiration of Jane Austen's novel. It is not adapted brilliantly but the concept of marrying your daughters is really very traumatic and humorous in asian societies. The mothers are really bent on finding a rich handsome green card or british pasport holder man for their beauty queens without realising how they are going to be adjusted in a foreign environment. ... ...and Maya, of Mr. Bakhshi who is a farmer living in a Amritsar punjab side of india. At this point they were invited in a wedding where the four sisters meet Balraj a british indian and Darcy who is a rich british person. The ...

I am an Indian and I really looked forward to this film that seemed like it was going to merge genres and do well to introduce the brilliant acting of Rai to the western world! After watching the film I would have to say yes it is colourful and funny. However its neither here nor there it follows Austen's plot pretty much to the letter, with adaptation of course, but just feels empty and shallow. It began well with the first song in Punjabi or Hindi, ... ...makes no sense to me and spoilt some really good dancing. Many Bollywood films have songs and stock characters but there is also serious issues underlying the films and they are addressed throughout the film. This does not address anything serious and seems to be just a big song and dance. We never believe Lakhi is any genuine trouble with Wickham, which I did when reading the novel.
This film lacks all the subtlety of Austen's novel and there is ...

Bride and "Prejudice is a Bollywood" version of the great "Pride and Prejudice" written by one of England's finest authors - Jane Austen. It is a love story in which there is often much confliction due to the prejudice of characters on both sides. Bride and Prejudice highlights this within two families - representing the Asian Culture and the other representing the Western culture.
The music and dancing is truly outstanding. It has been so cleverly ... ...squeezed into to a compact time of 2 hours! It is a very colourful film - really highlighting the Asian culture. There are many 'oohs' and 'Ah's'. Involves lots of emotion.

Advantages: lighthearted, suitable for all viewers, gives an insight to the indian culture Disadvantages: the fighting was a little superficial and could have done with a bit more of romance
This film is a must see romantic comedy if you are a big fan of Aishwarya Rai. If you have seen Bombay Dreams and liked it, the chances are you will like the musical entertainment in this movie as they are somewhat similar. The story script while not extraordinary, is rather catchy. This is probably due to the fact that it is a fusion of the Asian and Western culture.
Martin Henderson's did an excellent job of his character as Will Darcy, the arogant, ... ...However he does not pull off the on screen romance well. The movie comes to an end without even a kiss so, if you go there thinking that romance equals physical contact, you will be disappointed.
Naveen Andrews who plays Balraj (Darcy's Friend), does a good job with the first song sequence. On the whole this movie is a must see if you are looking something lighthearted after a hard week or day at work. Just don't keep all hopes up. Leave your imagination ...

At first I wasnt too sure about this movie, the first 15mins or so seemed a bit over the top kind of like a musical! Once we got over the sudden outbursts of song the film became very enjoyable. Advantages: Feel-good fun and a good opportunity to sample a different culture Disadvantages: not for those who hate Bollywood
This was my first ever Bollywood movie (though I am told this is Bollywood lite). I thought it was enormous fun, full of colour and verve. The music was actually accesible - Bollywood with some standard western numbers as well. The script was a bit weak in places and I thought Martin Henderson was miscast as Darcy - he didn't have the brooding power and chemistry of a Colin Firth and he was out-classed by Aishwarya Rai. Aishwarya Rai is impossibly ... ...to it, eg no kissing and the way it celebrated marriage. It was nice that all the men in the movie quite frankly all wanted to get married as much as the women - I think this is true of men in real life, only they are encouraged to hide it and act macho and the convention in movies is to show men as reluctant.
This is not for those who don't like Bollywood though - my husband didn't like it - I think it was the eunuchs appearing in the street number ...
