Advantages: Still fresh after all these years Disadvantages: None
Made in 1959, Breathless tells the story of Michel Poiccard (Jean-Paul Belmondo), a hipster who steals a car in Marseilles, kills a cop, and heads for Paris. While in Paris, he tries to commit further criminal acts, such as trying to cash a stolen cheque, and there he meets American student Patricia (Jean Seberg). Michel falls in love Patricia and entices her to run away with him. But the long arm of the law is reaching out.
Breathless is an affectionate ... ...existential questions.
Stylistically, Breathless was probably the most self-reflexive film of the 1960s, with its call to the audience that they were truly watching a film.
The aforementioned jump cut not only was Godard’s “two fingers” to conventional Hollywood film language, but it also restructured the way we see movies today, especially with montages and story lines. The use of hand-held camera work was also groundbreaking, as this was before ...

Advantages: Iconic performances, unique directing style, gorgeous cinematography, wicked score. Disadvantages: May be a little confusing to some.
This tale of two could-be lovers on the lam is an altogether charming, amusing and downright original piece of cinema. It's the key film of the French New Wave and it's one of the coolest things ever to grace the screen. Jean-Paul Belmondo is superbly cast as the naive hipster Michel, a small time criminal with dreams of being like Humphrey Bogart. The viewer is seduced by this sexy, mischief maker only to have your alliance towards him called into ... ...Seberg makes for a quirky, pixie like romantic lead as Michel's latest fixation. Jean-Luc Godard uses the rather light plot to experiment with the camera - jump cuts, close-ups, hand held, direct sound - it's all thrown in there to create an atmospheric, kinetic and frantic paced film. And that funky, jazz score adds to the cool factor. One of my all time favourite scenes happens half way through the film as Michel and Patricia flirt and talk aimlessly ...

Advantages: Superb example of French new Wave Disadvantages: If you like conventional entertainment, stear clear.
If you have any interest in cinema as an art form as oppose to purely entertainment then viewing a few Jean Luc Godard films is a must. He was at the forefront of the french new wave in the fifties and sixties - a form of cinema which tried to evoke the experience of living through natural light, hand held cameras, totally improvised performances and unconventional narrative structure and editing technique. This film along with Godard's Weekend are ...

Jean-Luc Godard's 'A Bout De Souffle' (or 'Breathless') is an effortlessly cool homage to American 50s B-movies, that set the trend for countless indie film-makers. The conventional story is about a young car thief, played by Jean-Paul Belmondo, who kills a cop and goes on the run with his girlfriend. However the film is striking because of Godard's 'point-and-shoot' technique, using hand-held cameras, improvised dialogue and brutal cutting. 'Breathless' ...

Advantages: great story, cast Disadvantages: none, see review
Well, this is a film that has plenty of swagger and energetic style from the French cinema. The film is called A Bout De Souffle, directed by Jean-Luc Godard.
The film is a love story between Michel Poiccard(Jean-Paul Belmondo), a small-time criminal on the run for murder and Patricia Franchini(Jean Seberg), an American girl selling newspapers on the streets of Paris. The relationship starts to bloom as Michel hides from the police.
The film was ... ...many references to pop culture in France. There is a gritty, documentary feel to this film. Godard tries to bring plenty of depth to the characters.
In the bedroom scene with Michel and Patticia, the characters try and fail with their relationship due to their different worlds. A Bout De Souffle was released under the title Breathless. When it was released in 1960, many people responded to the great energy of this film, which became a box office ...

Advantages: Charming and a classic mustsee film Disadvantages: Subtitles (this is a French film), oddity, simplicity
I have seen this film a few times, most notably with my father, who loves it, and then again with
my boyfriend, who thought it boring. I personally thought it was fantastic. As a Truffaut classic, upon
which opinions are notable diverse, it is well worth
watching simply in order to make up your own mind.
The points to be appreciated about this film are:
1. This is a classic, and well worth watching in order
to form your own opinion.
2. If ... ...3. If you want a character-centered film, then watch this. Jean Seberg and Jean Paul Belmondoare excellent, Seberg as the charming yet lost American newspaper seller, and Jean Paul as the gangster. Both roles are elegantly disjointed, and yet I felt they were easy to connect with and very human.
The points to be considered about this film are:
1. If you find subtitles irritating, beware.
2. My boyfriend, who didn't like it, found the film
a little ...

Advantages: one of the best crime movies ever, a gem which has'nt aged at all, with superb perfomances from Belmondo and Seberg. Disadvantages: dont watch it if you dont like wobbly cameras
Until a couple of years ago, this film was virtually impossible to find. I had heard so many good things about it, I was thrilled when it was rereleased in the cinema, and I was not disappointed.
Not only is this film a superior crime movie, it is also hilariously funny. Jean Paul Belmondo is one of the coolest anti-heroes in modern cinema, with his half dog end of a cigarette permanently protruding out of his mouth, and his Bogarde pretensions; ... ...love interest of Belmondo who eventually causes his downfall.
Basically Godard's take on the crime thrillers of the day, this revolutionary film shed a whole new light on the genre. His famous use of the jump-cut breathes vitality into the literally 'breathless' story, and even forty or so odd years on this film still seems as fresh as when it was made. ...
