Advantages: Fantastic dvd of standout BBC series Disadvantages: No extras!
...I fell in love with Blackpool the first time it was broadcast on the BBC. It is just a fabulous, modern musical, sort of in the style of Moulin Rouge (which I did like), because they sing a wide variety of contemporary and classic songs. It portrays Blackpool both as the glamorous English seaside Vegas that Ripley fantasizes it to be, and also as a somewhat seedy, rundown resort. It is also a mystery and a romance, with a touch of wry humour thrown ... ...D.I. Carlisle. For anyone interested in the new Dr. Who's previous roles, this is a prime example of why he was chosen to become the latest timelord. He is perfect in this role, a joy to watch as always.
He (Detective Carlisle) is investigating a murder, focusing on the local big man about town, Ripley Holden, played by the also excellent David Morrissey. The series unfolds with a good deal of suspense and various subplots involving Ripley's children. ...

Advantages: Entertaining, Enjoyable, Well Acted, Different, Unique Disadvantages: Only one series!
...drama? If so the BBC Blackpool DVD series is probably the one for you. It is a mystery murder whodunnit starring David Morrisey (now starring in Basic Instinct 2), David Tennant (the new Dr.Who), Sarah Parish (Cutting It), John Thomson (Cold Feet), Shyanne Holden (Coronation Street) and Steve Pemberton (League of Gentleman) among others. The plot revolves around a murder in a new arcade owned by Ripley Holden (David Morrisey) and the invesigation ... ...are a variety of popular song and dance routines which have you watching open mouthed at this unique show. I won't go any further into the plot as I wouldn't want to spoil it for you.
The DVD comes with 2 discs - 3 episodes on each. You can pick up a copy on amazon for about £12 and possibly cheaper on ebay or another auction site.
This is thoroughly reccommended if you missed the show on the BBC last year. The only downside - well it was only ...

Advantages: Thoroughly enjoyable Disadvantages: You might want to watch it all the time
If you didn't see this when it was shown on BBC1 television, then a major treat awaits you in your local DVD store or Internet shopping outlet.
Without giving away too much of the story :-
A young scally (supposedly on his stag weekend) is found dead in a locked amusement arcade.
A young Scottish detective is brought in to investigate.
The series shows the personal and public inter-relationships between the larger than life amusement arcade owner, ... ...There are musical interludes throughout where the cast perform various classic and not so classic pop tunes with dance sequences which go from the sublime to the totally ridiculous and back again.
Lots of twists and turns along the way, with great performances from abroad ranging ensemble of actors cast in a totally inspired fashion.
It is probably best to approach this DVD without too much prior knowledge, but look out for the line where the Elvis ...
