I received this DVD as a Christmas gift from my daughter after much hinting ... ...day , ten minutes with Billy is guaranteed to have me rolling around , helpless with laughter , whether I choose the classic " Billy and Albert " , " The Pick of Billy Connolly " , " Billy Bites Yer Bum " or one of the newer world tour compilations .
It's the blend of quirky thoughts , alternative views on life , harshly funny childhood memories and strange but hilarious songs that makes the trademark " Billy " session what it is .

Advantages: Best comedian of his generation Disadvantages: Victim of his own success
Firstly I am a massive Billy Connolly fan. I have loved his work for a long time and although I am too young to have seen him in some of his original Parkinson interviews I am fortunate enough to have seen most of his performances back to back, rather than having to wait years for another tour.
His latest tour 'Too old to Die Young' was recorded in New York in 2005 while he was at the spritely age of 61. I have seen some of Billy's attempts at being ... ...become a little too cliched. Billy was always great at observational humour, telling stories of something that happened to him or something he saw, but always something we could relate to. He would put a comic slant on an everydayoccurance and make us realise just how funny parts of our lives could be, it just took someone with the right kind of eye to see this. His stories of the effects of drinking snakebite ('drunk from the legs up') and his horror ...

...of national identity to find Billy Connolly hilariously funny, and for the most part he is. He's declined in the public popularity somewhat in the last couple of years, due to some less than PC comments he made at a live show about the plight of Iraq hostage Ken Bigley (reputedly he said something about how he wished the captors would "just get on with it"). Of course, this shocked the world, but not in the usual Connolly style and his popularity ... ...audience, the American public find Billy absolutely side-splittingly hilarious; but all through the hour long DVD, I think the three of us got a good laugh all of about 5 times. Some of the material is shamelessly recycled; some is relevant only to the American public and some is just simply not funny. However, not to drag it down too much; a few of the sketches are absolute solid gold!! In particular, the piece that he ends on about his experience ...

Quick review of Billy Connolly - Live In New York (DVD)
I'd like to say this is a great DVD but I'd be lying. He is getting older and is talking to an American audience so obviously this will effect what he says, but the problem with the DVD is more accurately that he just isn't as funny.
It's disappointing to say but I wouldn't particularly recommend the DVD. If you can get it from a good price then go for it but don't rush to buy it. If you are wanting to introduce Billy to someone then buy his DVD from the 90s. ...
