Advantages: A few good performances Disadvantages: Sloppy direction and scripting, rampantly homophobic attitudes of many characters
...the Russian mafia. Wouldn't it be nice if everyone could just be cool?
Director F Gary Gray clearly isn't a man afraid of unoriginality; he previously helmed "The Italian Job" remake. That could be the reason that "Be Cool" feels more like a greatest hits compilation than a real story. For one thing it's a sequel to a very popular film and for another it trades heavily on the reputations and charisma of its stars. Gray falls short because he is ... ...chain-smoking in an attempt to be commanding. He occasionally relents and lets the slightly more charming twinkly-eyed side do the talking, but it still doesn't qualify as acting. He's still trying to trade on the kudos lent him by "Pulp Fiction", but those days are long gone and he's plunged too deep into the mainstream to be considered a cult figure. He's now just a portly middle-aged man on the slide.
Uma Thurman disappoints as sexy widow Edie; ...

Advantages: Another decent performance from Travolta, enjoyable script Disadvantages: Vince Vaughn, it will be compared to the original and that is where its main short comings will be
...the sequel never seems to be better than the original and that is certainly the case with Be Cool. Get Shorty is one of my favourite films and for the follow up to be better than its predecessor would have been some accomplishment. The original was something totally different to other movies and there was something in the Danny De Vito/John Travolta partnership that really seemed to click and work so well. Like all sequels Be Cool has been slated ... ...and find out.
I'll be honest that having read the reviews and heard a few people talking about it I didn't expect a lot from this follow up. In fact if anything I wondered if maybe they had made a mistake in making the film. It turned out that I actually really enjoyed it, it's not as good as the first but I think if you put the first one out of your mind this is a decent comedy film. It will make you laugh and it is thoroughly enjoyable, you just ...

Advantages: Decent Cast, Travolta dances Disadvantages: Vince Vaughn and a host of stupid characters, lame story
...The only question that can be asked is "was it worth the wait?"
Disenchanted with the movie industry, Chili Palmer (Travolta) takes a crack at the other major entertainment industry in Los Angeles - Music. When a music producer get's shot in broad daylight, Chili steps in to help his widow (Uma Thurman) run the record company. Chili takes young singer Linda Moon under his wing and set's her on the way to stardom. But it's not all plain sailing as ... ...has been taken from them. Be Cool is another tale of the show business underbelly in LA LA Land.
Sadly Be Cool is a pretty average film that thinks it's being pretty clever. In trying to emulate the smart nature of the original film, the makers have instead dumbed down the material and thrown in more cast members than you could shake a stick at. The result is incredibly cluttered, a bit bland and at times pretty annoying.
Travolta himself is perfectly ...

Advantages: Good cast Disadvantages: Some tedious singing
...are plenty of laughs to be had. There are references to Pulp Fiction and Saturday Night Fever when Edie asks Chili if he can dance. “Yes, I’m from Brooklyn”, he says.
There are also some great gags at the start, about how useless sequels are. So, is this sequel useless? Well, the main problem with it is, is that the music industry, especially gangster rap, is really beyond parody. For instance, it’s widely known that the industry often holds a trail ... ...touch and then don’t bother. The plot also starts to drift in the middle and the whole thing is not as clever as its predecessor. Also, the music scenes are often tedious and the whole thing feels a bit too long, at nearly 2 hours. Having said that, "Be Cool" works more often than not - check out the hilarious sight-gag at the end when someone (I won't say who) ends up being set on fire and then inadvertantly wanders onto the set of an R'nB video.

Being able to see John and Uma on screen again, was reason enough to make me hit my local movie box. I knew that I would not get to see the electric chemistry that I got in Pulp Fiction but what ever I can grab I'll take. Unhappy with the movie bizz, Chili Palmer (John Travolta) ... ...movie with others you will be measuring with a short stick. Of course it does not compare, that's the reason why you loved that outstanding movie.. because it was so much better than movies that you usually see. Be Cool is a good movie that is funny. It does not leave you in awe but it sure makes you laugh for a couple hours. You cannot watch this movie and say that it was not amusing. At times the story seems to take great leaps and be unrealistic, ...

Advantages: HAS LOTS OF FAMOUS ACTORS Disadvantages: THE ROCK IS A GAY BODYGUARD
...the theatre thinking, “this should be alright.” But I came out thinking, “That was a ****ing AWESOME movie!” This movie totally surpassed my expectations. 'Be Cool' has such a random interconnected flow to it which all relate back to the whole scheme of things; and that’s what makes it awesome: The fact that it is fresh, funny, random, and most importantly, MAKES SENSE, all in one movie. A lot of times in a movie, you’ll ... ...think about it later it doesn’t exactly fit into the plot of the movie. The ENTIRE cast performed so well that you can’t picture anyone else that would fit their role; one definitely worth mentioning is The Rock. I sat there wondering how he pulled it off; he just performed that well. Then I tried to picture him as The Scorpion King. He is two TOTALLY different people that you’d find it hard for him to play such diverse roles; but ...
