...Robbie forever. - Atonement is an incredibly beautiful film and one that moves at an urgent pace. From the very opening scene when Bryony is hurriedly finishing writing the play on her typewriter, the tap of the keys forms the beat of the music and it is sharp and urgent and the whole feel underlying is that of a frantic nature and of a foreboding. This is brilliantly done and throughout the film strange sounds such as these, are picked out and ...

...wrongdoing. The story of Atonement begins in the sumptuous and idyllic setting of an upper class family who live in a huge country mansion. It initially takes place in 1935 pre war Britain and it is a very compelling and complex film. Basically it is the tale of the relationship of two sisters and a local man. A love triangle of sorts. Bryony is thirteen, and a very precocious, sensitive, creative and highly strung individual. Her older sister Cecilia ...

The Truth, the Half-Truth and Something Else

Advantages: Beautiful cinematography, committed performances, an innovative score.
Disadvantages: The mannered acting made everything seem a little forced.

On a sweltering day in England in 1935, the Tallis family gather for the weekend. The oppressive heat creates a sense of forbidding that is realised all too soon. Youngest child and would-be writer Briony sees a series of exchanges between her elder sister Cecilia and Robbie Turner, the university-educated son of their housekeeper. She misinterprets the events, leading her to accuse Robbie of a terrible crime he did not commit. The accusation destroys ...
..."Pride and Prejudice" director Joe Wright returns with only his second feature film and a hell of a picture it is too. You have to have real bottle to tackle a novel thought unfilmable and Wright does so with aplomb. He approaches it as a high-end heritage film take on an epic love story. The whole production looks amazing; very glossy with great attention to period detail. The opening scenes are drenched in golden hues that reflect the idea of a ...

* Atonement *

Advantages: Acting , Plot ,
Disadvantages: None!

Atonement is a 2007 film based on the romantic novel by the English writer Ian McEwan. The film was directed by Joe Wright and stars Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. Atonement was released in the United Kingdom on September 7th 2007. Running time of the movie is one hundred and twenty three minutes ( just over two hours!). The film is a fifteen certificate. I will now try and describe what the film is about without giving too much of the plot away ...
...plot description : Atonement is set in the 1930's. Briony an enthusiastic writer aged thirteen and Cecilia are sisters who come from an extremely wealthy family. Robbie (the son of the family's housekeeper) is doing some gardening at the rich family's estate and in return their father is paying for Robbie's education at Cambridge university , where Cecilia also attends. The English Patient 2

Advantages: Well acted
Disadvantages: Sprawling epic

...was reticent to rent this, Atonement almost a tribute to that three hour groan in all but name. It's a visually stunning and authentic piece make no mistake and Keira Knightly is the stand out performance as the decadent moneyed daughter from the manor, but the central love story between her and James McAvoy has little chemistry and so not a truly romantic film in any way, or at least in my book, the film as cold as a broken fridge in the North Pole, ...
...in the video store, so Atonement my final selection for the Blockbuster five films for five quid deal to get me through this inclement spell of weather. I've been putting it off because I feared it would be another English Patient but to be fair it's not too boring and I lasted the two hours. Why Oscar chasing movies always have to be over two hours is beyond me but at least there was some sort of story to fill those two hours here, these big movies ...

Not Sorry I Watched This...

Advantages: A strong adaptation, great performance from McAvoy, moving
Disadvantages: It was never going to be as good as the book....

I have recently read 'Atonement' by Ian McEwan (and reviewed it here if you're interested) and we, the book club, decided to watch the film after we'd talked about the book. I really enjoyed the book and so I was a bit concerned that the film would be a disappointment as adaptations of books so often are. But the film was the most nominated of 2007, which bode well, and now that I have seen it, I would agree that the film's success at last night's ...

...devastated by the second. Atonement is a compelling, moving and heart-breaking story about how one mistake can affect the course of the future, and the lives of others in such devastating ways. It is also a very grisly and true-to life account of the horrors and futility of the War as we follow not only Robbie fighting on the front, but the two girls left behind working in the hospital wards that are struggling to cope with the wounded. A Wonderful love story

Advantages: Super acting, great story
Disadvantages: The ending was very unexpected - made me cry

I have wanted to see this film for some time now and even when I bought the DVD it still sat in the cupboard for over a month. With hubby being away again I took the chance to sit and watch it and I am so glad I did. She tries to get the children who are staying with her family to act out the arts so they can perform it but it does not go ...

Living With The Past

Advantages: great plot, great acting
Disadvantages: -

Atonement is I have to say one of the best films I have seen in a while. It was a film which relied less on special effects and merely on plot and tugging at the feelings of the audience and the cinema fell so silent as everyone watched and hoped. I had seen the trailers for this film about a month ago and thought at the time it looked like a war/love story but it is more than that as I found out when watching it. It definitely looked like it'd be ...
...somewhat likeable. The word atonement was not one I was familiar with until I looked it up. After seeing the film it is aptly chosen as it fits in with the plot and means to redeem or to have to live with something a sort of punishment to try and gain forgiveness. This film begins with the sound of rushed keys being slammed on a typewriter. It is the sound of someone enthusiastically typing away what their imagination will continue to give out. ...

Fighting the inner war.....

Advantages: Brilliant period drama
Disadvantages: Those not liking period and artistic films may not like this

Atonement is the 2007 film adapted from Ian McEwan's book of the same name and directed by Joe Wright. It featured at the Oscars. The Plot A blossoming relationship between Robbie Turner and Celia Tallis is halted when Robbie is falsely accused of a crime by Celia's younger sister, Briony, who is besotted with him. Briony's act changes the course of several people's lives with this lie, and the story follows the consequences of her actions set ...
...The two leads, Robbie and Celia, are played by James McAvoy and Keira Knightley. The chemistry between the two is sizzling, and they are both proving themselves as exceptional actors. 3 different actresses play Briony throughout the course of the film. Young Briony is played well by a very 'proper' Saoirse Ronan. Romola Garai plays the 18-year-old Brioney very well indeed, particularly with the elements of guilt shown. Finally, Vanessa Redgrave takes ...

Good film

Advantages: good story and great characters played by good actors
Disadvantages: maybe a little slow at first?

I have just been to see this film at the cinema and wanted to share my thoughts on the film. It is different to the films that i would normally go and see as when watching the previews for it you get the idea that it is a film set during the war. However when you watch it, it's actually not got scenes about the war all the way through and you actually don't go to the time of the characters being involved in that area until about half way through ...
...about the film then i would advise that you should watch as i really enjoyed it. The film is based on the book of the same name by Ian Mckeown, which, i haven't read myself so i wouldn't honestly be able to say wether it is a good adaptation of the book but the film is good itself. The film is directed by Joe Wright. The main characters in the film are as below: Keira knightley who plays cecelia James Mcavoy who plays robbie Saoirse ronan who ...

A pleasant Sunday Afternoon Offering

Advantages: Generates Discussion,.
Disadvantages: Overrated

I start this review by saying I have not read the book , so can not comment on if the Director has done a good job in translating the Book onto the Screen. So this is a review only about the Film which my better half and I went to see Yesterday (Sunday afternoon) at the Cinema in Nottingham. My first comment is praise for Ciniworld Nottingham in that it was advertised as being at 4 p.m. and the Film actually started at 4.01 p.m.. None of those ...
...I imagine this must not be normal as it seemed to catch quite a few people out as they arrived up to 15 mins after the film had started. I open by saying that I do not know how this film has achieved so many Bafta and Oscar nominations, I am not saying it is a bad film but its not that good either. The photography I would say is excellent, I really enjoyed the outside scenes. Also the Sound Quality was very good, so in the Crowded Lions Corner ...
