Advantages: Visually stunning, slick chase sequences Disadvantages: Far too gory, dodgy religious overtones, possible disservice to Mayan culture
...however, as a chase movie, Apocalypto is not really that original. But it was well told and is well set, with some good performances and thought-provoking themes so I would have to say that I liked it. 7/10 from me. And I resisted the urge to call this review “Mad Mayan”.

Advantages: Authentic. Excellent visually Disadvantages: Fast moving, foreign language
Apocalypto is an awe-inspiring film that keeps the viewer clinging to the edge of their seat. Based in the deep forests during the Mayan period, the visual aspects are quite something, especially the Mayan pyramids. The story by Mel Gibson and Farhad Safinia, focuses on Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood), a passionate yet brave warrior. In a tribe where the members, cook, hunt, build and even poke the fun out of each other, he plays his part for the community ...

Advantages: Action packed, Gripping, Disadvantages: Not for everyone.
Mel Gibson's Apocalypto (2006) may sound at first like a pretty dull and uninteresting film to watch but then you would be wrong this film is as potent and powerful as it is violent and brutal that can only be shown from the ancient Mayan civilization upon which it is set.
The whole film is spoken in the extinct Mayan language with English subtitles this gives it more depth and realism than if the people spoke in English as have many of films of ...

Advantages: Action-packed adventure that threatens to rip your heart out! Disadvantages: Maybe too violent for some.
It would seem that Mel Gibson is no longer flavour of the month in Hollywood land and this perhaps explains why his latest directorial effort has been so overlooked. Which is a shame, because it's a cracking movie.
At first glance this film may not seem too appealing. Once again, like Passion of the Christ, the spoken language is not English and subtitles are used instead. This is not to everyone's taste but many successful films over the past ...

Advantages: Heart stopping gore filled violence fest Disadvantages: All in sub-titles although quite amusing when they "swear" - Hmmmm I am really 28!! ;-)
My first review for a week or so, thought i'd better make it a good one.
The first bit of advice i'd give about this movie is that to make sure you haven't just eaten before watching!!!......This 15th-century adventure (performed by a mostly nonprofessional cast entirely in subtitled Mayan) begins with natives eating genitals and shows several beheadings as well as a heart being cut out of a living person's chest in loving close-up. - gore gore ...

Advantages: brilliant cinematography, thrilling story, intense Disadvantages: almost gave me a heart attack!
...a few people have labelled Apocalypto a racist movie. I'm sorry but I don't see it. What it shows is a powerful people conquering and oppressing weaker people and a man rebelling against it all. It's nothing less than the old tale of David vs. Goliath. And this intense battle is filmed beautifully. This is the kind of film that not many directors have the balls to make anymore. This epic film was truly made for the big screen. The scenery is breathtaking, ...

Advantages: Includes a making of documentary Disadvantages: Subtitles I guess, but superb nonetheless
I purchased this DVD a couple of weeks back after hearing it was quite good from colleagues at work and I wasn't disappointed. The story is about a Mayan tribe in Mexico that are forced out of their village by outsiders who are trying to capture them for sacrificial purposes. The story begins by introducing you to Jaguar Paw and his family, which then leads to his father being killed before his eyes by the outsiders when they invade at dawn, however ...

Advantages: 2 hours of zero distraction Disadvantages: it ends
if you by this dvd, be ready to do a lot of reading. being about a central american tribe on course it will .......... not be in the language of english. by the end of the film you will find that it was a bit of a stipulation.
do buy it anyway though. it takes you on a long thrilling winding journey about the hell a warrior in the tribe goes through to ultimately save his way of life and his culture.
if a bit of gore is what you want, than this ...
