Based on the diary writings of English widow Anna Leonowens, who journeyed to Siam in 1862 to tutor the children of King Mongkut, this is a grand, epic motion picture that recalls...
more...the Hollywood days of yore (see 1946's ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM and 1956's THE KING AND I for earlier screen adaptations). Yun Fat delivers a heartwarming performance that should finally earn him star status in America, and Foster is, as always, a magnetic screen presence. Their relationship, which is sparked by a just-beneath-the-surface romantic undercurrent, propels the story forward and provides it with its emotional core. As the film builds to its exciting climax, the relationship between the two is tested even further.

Review of Anna And The King (DVD) by sailormn

Advantages: True moving story
Disadvantages: none so far

...Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon), and Anna Leonowens (by Jodie Foster). It is love between two people, with different background, status and responsilities. You would enjoy the intriguing and interesting dialogues between Anna and King Mongkut, where both through argument, secretly admired each other. The true story is based in Siam (former name of Thailand). The movie begins with Anna (a widow) arriving in Siam with her son, Louis and two Indian ... Read review

An excellent movie
Review of Anna And The King (DVD) by alisonr

Advantages: Beautiful photography, excellent acting, fascinating story
Disadvantages: didn't go on any longer

...force in the world. Anna is summoned to work for the King of Siam and to tutor his (58) children about English customs. Anna takes her son and forms a strong bond with the King and the whole royal family. Ok so it may not sound very exciting, but there is plenty of drama, tension and action I can assure you. The film also explores the often unforgiving Siam customs and the impending war with Burma. The film is beautifully shot and a pleasure to ... Read review

Anna and the King personal view
Review of Anna And The King (DVD) by clairec73

Advantages: Great storyline, fantastic acting and good action shots
Disadvantages: Will not please die hard King and I fans

...Killers) - Jodie Foster as Anna Leonowens (Panic Room, Contact, Nell, Silence of the Lambs) The Film is based on the diaries of Anna Leonowens, who died in Canada, Quebec from a stroke in 1915. I think this is better than the original (King and I) despite my fondness of musicals. The acting is superb and there is a huge cast of extras. I can't imagine how difficult this was to make a film with the costumes (that are superb) and locations ... Read review

A real chick flick
Review of Anna And The King (DVD) by mazi

Advantages: excellent performance of Jodie Foster
Disadvantages: film for girls

This is a classic film based upon a true story, unlike the musical the king and I, it gives you a much better insight into the historical background of the film. As you would expect Jodie Foster gives an excellent performance as the main character Anna. My only criticism of the film is that ot takes a little time to get going and is definately a film for women-a chick flick- a good film to rent for a girls night in with a takeaway and worth buying ...
