...parasite on board the ship which has infected a member of the crew. This then leads to the birth of an alien which terrorises the crew throughout the rest of the film.
Tense, dark and very cleverly directed this is a classic for all sci fi and horror fans. ...

Advantages: A classic, must see film. Disadvantages: Don't watch if you are easily scared
...and tension. The world of Alien is gritty, dirty and far more real than other science fictions of it's time which portrayed the future world as silver, white and clean. This film is a must for science fiction and horror fans alike. Also for potential media or film studies students this film is a perfect springboard into a study of either of these genres as much study has already gone into it. Personally I have studied this film in regards to the ...

Advantages: Aliens, Science Fiction, Sigourney Weaver as Ripley Disadvantages: Old, Would be great with todays special effects, Not shown on TV often enough
Alien is one of those films that I could keep watching all the time. But, unfortunately, it is rarely on television anymore, apart from the odd showing on Sky Cinema now and then. The storyline is that the crew of a spaceship have to fight for survival, and the survival of all mankind when they discover that these alien life forms breed within a human host. Maybe it is the whole science fiction that gets me interested in seeing this film everytime ...

Advantages: Directing, "the Alien" Disadvantages: Shady plotting at times
Alien is a superb haunted house in space film, with the boogieman replaced by an alien designed by the brilliantly warped mind of H R Geiger.
The crew of a spaceship respond to a beacon and one of the shipmates is infected with an alien seed, which reveals itself in a gruesome fashion and then proceeds to hunt the crew.
There are some brilliant actors in this film - Weaver, Skerritt, Stanton too name a few and they put forward great performances ...

The Alien saga has to be my favourite science fiction series. The first in this series is, arguably, the best. Director Ridley Scott creates an air of clostraphobia inside the spaceship that makes you feel uneasy and scared. The movie is excellent, combining shock horror tactics with good effects to make a scary, but fun rollercoaster ride. The DVD comes with an extra disk which contains a documentary entitled 'The Alien Legacy'. This details the ...

Advantages: Loads of suspense Disadvantages: Spawned too many sequels
Alien is a very horror film set in space. The action starts when the crew of the Nostromo are awakened from hibernation to investigate a possible distress call. They pop down to the planet where the signal is coming from and inadvertendly pick up an alien along the way. From then on, things turn nasty. Director Ridley Scott builds up the suspense, giving the whole film the feel of a stylish slasher flick. There's lots of wandering down dimly lit ... ...the rest of the cast do a great job of being absolutely terrified. And there are plenty of creepy moments. Probably the most memorable moment of the movie is when the alien bursts out of John Hurt's stomach while he's having lunch. Don't you just hate it when that happens? ...

Advantages: scary as hell Disadvantages: little expensive for such an old film
...years after its original release, alien finally makes its way on to dvd, and i am pleased to say that this version takes nothing from the original and in places makes it more refreshing especially being able to watch the stomach bursting scene in slow motion and trying to spot the effects at work, ok its pretty easy but its still fun. Full mark to all concerned although the extra features are lacking this is a great horror film given a new lease ...

...always felt that the original Alien was superior to the sequels even though they are good. Part of the appeal of this movie was to see it when it came out. The concept of this monster gestating in the stomach and exploding from this man was just horrific when it first came out. I think the 'gore' factor and thus the shock factor is less now given the kind of atrocities you see on the big screen but for me this was a major leap in horror at the time ... ...out. This movie also presented one of the first realistic monsters. One based on a believable species that could reproduce and sustain itself. That too was part of the horror. It seemed like this could happen. The other aspect I enjoyed (and the following films let me down) was Scott's hiding of many of the 'gore' scenes (again like Psycho). For example showing an emotionless cat's flickering eyes as you hear screams in the background. Arresting. ...
