It has a great atmosphere to it, as various cast members wander around the ship, looking for the alien, but being more likely to be eaten! The alien itself is best scene in short snatches and, unfortunately, when seen in it's entirety it does disappoint, emphasising the limitations of the special effects in the pre-CGI world. Other than that, Scott made one hell of a film and the extras bring this out. Not only is there an interesting audio feature-length commentary from the man himself; but also some deleted scenes, accompanied by little commentaries from the director. ...

Well, OK, there's only one alien here, but the film owes much of its plot to Agatha Christie's "Ten Little Indians" novel, in that a small group of people are slowly killed off, gruesomely, one by one. Difference here is, we know What Dunnit! The plot is well-known: commercial spacecraft answers distress call, accidentally picks up deadly parasitic lifeform which incubates inside John Hurt, pops out demon-king-pano-style from his abdomen, then embarks ...
...For the latter, Alien was the film which finally got rid of the clinical, shiny surroundings of Star Wars and all its imitators, and showed the Nostromo as a dirty, falling-to-bits factory ship, with equally grubby crew members who swore and bitched at each other in a satisfyingly realistic evocation of cabin fever. ...but then picks up an alien which causes havoc on the ship. There is very good use of silence in this film. In the first few minutes there is no noise, only a camera going round the corridors of the ship. This silence creates yet more tension, as you are not sure what will happen next. The tension created is very much of a sudden shock kind, with some let-downs. It is very tense, and certainly made me jump sometimes. The only thing this film suffers ...
...the alien is wonderfully depicted. The film does not contain much nudity or bad language; the 18 certificate is only due to the frights in the film. It is a very good sci-fi thriller, and does make you want to watch on. But it is the type of film that relies on you not knowing what is happening next.
