ALIEN

Advantages: GREAT FILM
Disadvantages: NONE

...his face covered by an alien creature. this later falls off but the damage has all ready been done. Shortly afterwards an alien bursts from John Hurts stomache and then the alien slug grows into an enormous 9ft killing machine. What happens from this point on I will not divulge here, surely you've seen it? The film began a huge 'alien' type spin offs and clone type films. But none ever to match the original. The only negative from a personal point ...
...effects are nothing special but the performances from all of the crew where exceptional. The directors cut, which this film isn't, is far far superior. Starring, Sigourney Weaver, John Hurt, Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton. Written by Alan Dean Foster and directed by Ridley Scott. Watch this film its a cracker. Summary: Worth your time. ...

horror to stand the test of time

Advantages: Original, well made, timeless
Disadvantages: none

In my mind, Alien will always be one of the most well constructed horror films of the 20th Century. HR Giger’s creature is quite formidable and Ridley Scott’s choice to show very little of it adds the mystique that the alien is invulnerable. The Plot Take a haunted house story with seven unsuspecting good guys who discovery a monster and try to kill it or escape from it. Now take that scenario way into the future and onto a massive ...

I first saw this film in my early teens and remember having nightmares about various scenes. But after a few ...

It has a great atmosphere to it, as various cast members wander around the ship, looking for the alien, but being more likely to be eaten! The best science fiction film ever

Advantages: see text

...the title of the review, Alien is one of the best science fiction movies ever. It tells the story of a commercial ship that is carrying mineral ore from other planets back to earth when it picks up a distress call coming from an unknown planet. The crew of seven lands on the planet and sends a search party to see where the distress call is coming from. They end up finding an alien ship and--- in fact, I don't want to tell you anymore. ...has great special effects. The alien it perfect-- ugly, scary, and deadly in its own way. The only reason I'm not giving this an excellent is because the acting isn't as good as it could of been and it starts out pretty slow. Overall, this is one of the best science fiction movies ever made along with Star Wars, The Matrix, and Blade Runner. ...

...of HR Giger for the alien which is rarely glimpsed anyway. This was one of those films which I had to watch alone, simply so no one else would see me with my hands over my face. Scott handles the suspense excellently and I wouldn't advise anyone to watch it who has a heart condition - especially the notorious stomach-ripping scene. It can be strong stuff but anyone who can take the gore and suspense will find themselves rewarded by an intelligent ...

Loving the Alien

Advantages: More tension than you can shake a stick at. And then some.
Disadvantages: Why wasn't there a director's cut before?

I’m talking about the Director’s cut here (but it remains true for the original) – in its widescreen re-mastered glory. This was a great film originally; one of the first and best horror movies as we know them now. It worked because it was original: the nominal star was killed off (similar in thus regards to Psycho) and raised the question (which is usually so obvious): Who here is gonna survive? The answer: Who knows? The characters were brilliantly ...
...They interacted with each other as if they were real people; they got angry; there were divisions; they appeared to exist within a time and place of their own and we were only peeking into a small and strange (not to mention dangerous) period of their lives. So what’s the point of introducing a Director’s Cut then if it was such a great in the first place? The point is that Scott has removed (admittedly I couldn’t see where – a sure sign that he ...

...watches it today. The alien itself is best scene in short snatches and, unfortunately, when seen in it's entirety it does disappoint, emphasising the limitations of the special effects in the pre-CGI world. Other than that, Scott made one hell of a film and the extras bring this out. Not only is there an interesting audio feature-length commentary from the man himself; but also some deleted scenes, accompanied by little commentaries from the director. ...

Disadvantages: not too atmospheric

The first of the alien quartet, quintet? The first of the alien series! That’s better, if anyone knows, tell me, I know a set of three is a trilogy! Anyway as I was saying, the first of the set. Probably not the best, id say aliens was the best, or resurrection. This is more of a scene setter for the rest of the films, with the aliens being not too convincing or scary. The atmosphere isn’t really here either although Mrs Weaver is great ...

Ten Little Aliens

Advantages: Giger's designs, realism of The Nostromo, great cast
Disadvantages: Agh! It's Man In Rubber Suit!

Well, OK, there's only one alien here, but the film owes much of its plot to Agatha Christie's "Ten Little Indians" novel, in that a small group of people are slowly killed off, gruesomely, one by one. Difference here is, we know What Dunnit! The plot is well-known: commercial spacecraft answers distress call, accidentally picks up deadly parasitic lifeform which incubates inside John Hurt, pops out demon-king-pano-style from his abdomen, then embarks ...
...For the latter, Alien was the film which finally got rid of the clinical, shiny surroundings of Star Wars and all its imitators, and showed the Nostromo as a dirty, falling-to-bits factory ship, with equally grubby crew members who swore and bitched at each other in a satisfyingly realistic evocation of cabin fever. These were people pissed off with each others company, who were quite happy to spend most of their time in cryogenic suspension, safely ...

Stunning thriller

Advantages: Great story, tension
Disadvantages: Know the plot after one viewing

...but then picks up an alien which causes havoc on the ship. There is very good use of silence in this film. In the first few minutes there is no noise, only a camera going round the corridors of the ship. This silence creates yet more tension, as you are not sure what will happen next. The tension created is very much of a sudden shock kind, with some let-downs. It is very tense, and certainly made me jump sometimes. The only thing this film suffers ...
...the alien is wonderfully depicted. The film does not contain much nudity or bad language; the 18 certificate is only due to the frights in the film. It is a very good sci-fi thriller, and does make you want to watch on. But it is the type of film that relies on you not knowing what is happening next. Once you have seen it, it will not be as scary. So try not to watch it too often, as the fun will wear off. ...
