Advantages: Spooky classic Disadvantages: Can be slow at times
It is not easy to categorise Alien. It is obviously Sc-Fi but it is so much more than that. It's a thriller as well. And a damn fine one aswell. Ridley Scott's superb direction works in tandem with some great performances from Ian Holm and Sigourney Weaver. It is littered with truely memorable scenes such as the infamous chestburster scene and the loss of control by Ian Holm's character. The set design is also top notch, the spaceship has an inbuilt ... ...around'm that Scott takes us on in the films opening scene. The ship and the creature have almost matching designs and the darkness that most of the film takes place in ensures that the audience is never exaclty sure what is going on. By taking inspiration from 2001 and a little from Star Wars he managed to create a science fiction horror films that was league ahead of anything else like it. The sets are fantastically constructed and if you have never seen any of HR Giger's art work before it's well worth a look for that alone. The cast work together brilliantly, and this was the film that launched Sigorny Weaver's career. As for Riddle Scott, it proved he ...

I purchased the Region 1 Version long before it was even announced over here. I was very happy with it then, and I am very happy with it now.
Picture = 9
One of the best transfers that an older movie has been given. Presented in its original aspect ratio and enhanced for widescreen TVs.
Sound = 9
The sound has been remixed from the old track to a new Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack and believe me, it sounds great. The score occupies the surrounds ... ...jump out of your skin moments.
Extras = 10
There is a new commentary from Ridley Scott, very good. There are lots of deleted scenes which are very good indeed. There are tonnes of photos, a screensaver, more DVD Rom content.
Well worth the purchase because it is a classic movie and deserves a place in everyones collection, the extras and the quality of the presentation make it an absolute must. ...

Advantages: The ULTIMATE way to see the film Disadvantages: absolutely none
I'm a huge fan of this film, and so grabbed the R1 DVD as soon as I got my player.
Well, what can I say? WOw. From the outside this DVD impresses.
The menu screen(s) are some of the best I've seen, its clear real thought has been put into them.
For a 20 year old film, the re mastered picture looks excellent and is definately the best print of the film I've seen.
The sound too is excellent, putting some of the newer films on DVD to shame.
So, ... ...but wait..theres more. i havn't evcen touched the extras yet. With deleted scenes, photogrophy and concept sketches its a fairly comprehensive package. But the real kicker is the directors commentary.
If your a big fan of the film you *need* this commentary, the director rarely pauses and always has something to say about whats on screen. As such we get a great insight into how the film was made. One of the better commnetaries I've seen.
I don't ...

...tagline to this 1979 classic. Alien is certainly a masterpiece of the Sci-Fi/Horror genre. Ridley Scott's richly atmospheric and lavishily detailed direction immediately makes this a film that stands high above all of its rivals. The story itself is simple and harkens back to those 1950's space creature pictures. The production design is simply marvelous. The design of the Nostromo is filled with realistic details, and creates a claustiphobic atmosphere. ... ...derilict spaceship and the Alien itself has been much imitated since. The seven foot creature is truly a work of art. Only Aliens came close to really recaptuing the striking horror and beauty of the creature.

Girl power is introduced by Spice Girls. However I don't think so. Actually this movie has already told you that how powerful can a girl be. Sigourney Weaver really a lady that can kick alien's ass. The graphic, gory death scenes and horriffic screams and sounds in this film make it one of the most frightening films in motion picture history. ...wreaking havoc on humanity. Alien follows all those rules and regulations to a T but is without doubt one of the epic monster movies of the last thirty years, with Sigourney Weaver's lead role both strong and yet vulnerable - perfect for what's needed.

This is the one I think most of my friends on here remember, the one that started it all.
