Aeon Flux. It's very rare that I see a film I hate (only Cutthroat Island and Battlefield Earth have ever received one star from me), but in this absolutely awful sci-fi action flick, we have another. Maybe the fact that I had just seen the brilliant Crash biased my judgement, but I couldn't help feeling that in the same day I had watched the best and worst film of the last year.
As soon as the credits said it was an MTV production I knew we were ... ...why.
Charlize Theron plays Aeon Flux, who in the year 2415, decides to stand up to the ruler of a utopian city, Bregna, which is Earth's last populated city after a virus wiped out 99% of the population 400 years back. You see, she is a member of an organisation called the Monicans, who are sick of living in this seemingly perfect world, and see it as little more than a gilded cage. When the government murders her sister, Aeon's life is dedicated ...

...city's leaders. Her name is Aeon Flux, an acrobatic assassin out for revenge against the men she blames for her sister's death.
Since the departure of the Sigourney Weaver's Ripley, cinema has been crying out for another female action heroine. But from the look of this nonsensical bucket of tripe, it will have to wait a while longer. So what went wrong? All the elements are here; director Karyn Kusama was at the helm of critically-acclaimed "GIrlfight" ... ...to a product recall. When Aeon says at the climax "Now we can move forwards", you want to add "because now there isn't a dirty great wall in the way!" In fact some of the script is so risible that you might actually find yourself slapping your forehead in disbelief. The plot twists are similarly laughable; the "surprise" bad guy may as well be carrying a flashing neon sign declaring himself as such. At least he has a clear goal, unlike the majority ...

Advantages: Johnny Lee Miller back in action is about it! Disadvantages: Everything else is just cliched and awful!
Aeon Flux started as a series of short animated episodes on MTV where a gun toting, black catsuit wearing female killed just about everyone in sight before, invariably, dying at the end of the story. This format turned out to be very successful and Aeon Flux moved on to 20 minute stories which allowed a bit more story but still pretty much followed the same idea. Bullets flying everywhere as the acrobatic woman killed a virtual army of bad guys! ... ...woman, now given the name Aeon Flux.
In 2011 99% of the worlds population is killed by a virus, Trevor Goodchild discovers a cure and builds a city to house all those who have survived. The city is called Bragna, is populated by 5 million people and 400 years later is considered a paradise city, at least by most of inhabitants anyway.
There are those that don't agree though, The Monicans, as they are called, don't think that the Goodchild dynasty, ...

...tele. Eventually he picked out Aeon Flux. I'm not really a film person so I had no idea what it was about let alone whether it would be any good.
Background - Before Aeon Flux
In 2011 a terrible virus wipes out 99% of the world's population and only 5million people survive. A world renowned scientist develops a cure for this terrible disease and founds the city of Bregna. The world outside turns into uncontrollable wilderness and so a wall is built ... ...problem under control. Aeon Flux
There is an uprising against the government in 2415. The monicans, including Aeon Flux, do all they can to free people of the oppression of the government of Bregna. They try to answer the questions of why so many people are going missing and why nobody else asks any questions. One day after Aeon is sent "blind" government surveillance her sister is killed and she swears revenge on the people behind it; she assumes ...

...they once rightly dominated.
Aeon Flux (Charlize Theron) is the agent assigned with the task of assassinating Trevor Goodchild (Marton Csokas). Equipped with an intimate knowledge of how to kill a man with her bare thighs, Flux sets out on her mission with the aid of her trusted friend, Sithandra (Sophie Okonedo), a human hybrid who’s modified her feet to be another pair of hands to help her move about more swiftly.
Having crossed the border from ... ...crossing lawns of grass that instantly turn to deadly spikes and tasty-looking fruit that fire poisonous darts at intruders, Flux comes face-to-face with Goodchild – and the truth of humanity’s situation is revealed. Physically unable to kill Goodchild no matter how hard she tries, it turns out that in curing the disease and saving five million humans, the scientist inadvertently sterilised the whole population and has spent the past four hundred ...

Advantages: Decent enough in places; Theron's wardrobe! Disadvantages: No oomph at all; more like an episode of a TV series than a film
I've been putting off watching Aeon Flux for a while, although I'm not too sure why. It probably had something to do with the negative feedback it gained after promising so much. Adapted from a sci-fi series in the early 1990s and starring Charlize Theron, who is usually on fire on screen, I was surprised when it got slated, but last night, with the wife round at a friend's house and son William tucked up in bed, I thought I'd give it a go.
The ... ...So, the plot seems okay. Aeon Flux (Charlize Theron) is a Monican, and teams up with Sithandra (Sophie OKenodo) to infiltrate Goodchild's base and take him out. She is sent by the Handler (Frances McDormand), and this is where the sci-fi kicks in. The Handler communicates via a sort of telepathic link, with the Monicans swallowing a pill which connects to the neurons in the brain and visualises the recipient in a chamber, having a conversation. Other ...

Advantages: GREAT stunts and special effects, Theron looking stunning! Disadvantages: Some of the characters lack the depth that would make them engaging
Aeon Flux
Firstly, I'll admit that I rented this film on the purely superficial and shallow basis that Charlize Theron looked brilliant in the promotional pics and trailers for this film. However, I have to say that it delivered purely as a film on its own.
STORYLINE
The storyline is not bad at all. The film is basically, a post-apocalyptic femme fatale movie. We enter a world, known as Bregna which on the face of it is Utopia, a perfect society. ... ...society, and Charlize Theron, plays Aeon Flux, an assassin kitted up in gorgeously fitting tight leather, who works for a rebel group trying to avenge a set of mysterious deaths. I do not wish to ruin the film for you lot so that's all I'm telling you!. SPECIAL EFFECTS
The special effects are what make this film really stand out for me! There are some really beautiful and stunning scenes and the film starts with a brilliant one where we see the ...

The story follows Aeon Flux, a member of a rebel group named the 'Monicans' in the city of 'Bregna'. Her sister is kidnapped and killed by the ruling factor of Earth's last remaining city. This is not an uncommon occurence and happens regularlt around the city. Aeon and the rest of the rebels are trying to stop this.
Aeon is commanded by her leader to assassinate the leader of the city, Trevor, but as she gets closer and closer to the truth ... ...quite a good scene when Aeon and one of her associates are trying to negotiate a garden full of booby-traps to infiltrate the governements headquarters, and contains some quite fantastic stunts and graphics.
However once they do infiltrate the headquarters, there are some more action scenes, that once again do not disappoint. i.e Theron killing a man with her thighs!! But once again other than these the rest of the sequences do highly disappoint. ...

Advantages: Looks good Disadvantages: Feels badly edited
Aeon Flux is an assassin trying to undermine a Utopian society where almost the whole population has died from some disease and everyone else lives in a perfect city. It's predictable that the wall around the perfect city is going to end up getting partially destroyed so people can go live on the rest of the planet. It ends up that everyone is a clone and they are trying to have children naturally but this is already happening and those people are ... ...the end. That might sound like I have spoilt most of the plot there but far from it, theres a lot more plot and its extremely complex too. I truly wanted to like this. It's a little too complex to make any sense in the amount of time it's presented in. I watched the DVD version & I get the feeling it's been edited to hell & beyond. You get the feeling this was supposed to be lots longer (especially seeing as there are 4 hours of bonus features on ...

...starring Charlize Theron as assassin Aeon Flux. The plot is complex but understandable. This movie is based on the animated series and has attempted to stay true to its roots, helped by the involvement of Patrick Chung (the original series creator).
The sets are the usual mixture of computer graphics and real life, but as is usual these days you can't tell where one ends and the other starts! The city of Bregna is not your usual post apocalyptic ...
