You'd have thought, by now, that if American students only learn one thing in college, it's never to take a detour or short cut down dirt tracks when driving. Apparantly not !
As their seimester comes to an end, three college guys, Anderson Lee (Jay Gillespie), Cory Jones (Matthew Carey), and Nelson Elliot (Dylan Edrington), plan on heading down to Daytona Beach for Spring Break. After a break from driving, they wake up to find the road ahead closed, ... ...narrow dirt track.
Before long, the trio arrive in the town of Pleasant Valley - a sleepy 19th century town, and are readily greeted by one-eyed Mayor Buckman (Robert Englund) and the townsfolk who are preparing to celebrate "The Guts and Glory Jubilee" - an annual event commemorating a historic event in the American Civil War - and all are dressed in costumes from the era. ...have seen this year is 2001 Maniacs, a remake of Hershell Gordon Lewis' movie 2000 Maniacs. From the trailer its evident that the movie is going to be a nasty horror movie with an amusing twist. With Eli Roth the man that bought us Hostel and Cabin Fever as not only the producer but one of the cast, and a not too distant feel to House Of 1000 Corpses, 2001 Maniacs is one hell of a ride.
Three failing students head for Daytona for their spring break, ... ...States. When I heard about 2001 Maniacs I knew I'd be foolish not to see it. Having waited 3 years I was not disappointed with my viewing.
The major thing about the movie is that it reminds me so much of House Of 1000 Corpses you can almost smell it; like Corpses its guests are initially welcomed and made to feel like one of the family. However also like Corpses having been welcomed into the fold so to speak, its not long before the real reason ...

Advantages: Great gore scenes, acting is so bad its laughable Disadvantages: Acting, acting and uh.... acting!
...gore-meister Hershell Gordon-Lewis’ 2000 Maniacs, 2001 Maniacs goes for the ‘so bad its good’ style of horror but slightly misses the mark. Three college slackers, Anderson, Corey and Nelson are on their way to Spring Break in Florida when an unexpected detour takes them into the small, off the map town of Pleasant Valley, South Carolina. They are joined by 3 drifters; Joey, Kat and Ricky, and biker couple Malcolm and Leah, who have all also arrived ... ...a taste of them. 2001 Maniacs certainly lives up to its predecessor as far as blood and gore is concerned, but, for me, the characters are so lame and unconvincing that they are hardly worth caring about. The film is riddled with the type of unconvincing and below par acting that one usually associates with a low-budget horror flick, you would see better at your local matinee on a Saturday afternoon or your son Timmy’s high school play. Advantages: Robert England is the mayor! Disadvantages: Can drag at parts
...could this be because theirs 2001 Manaics inhabiting this strange village and their all looking for some southern styled revenge? The film plays out ok, even though it does seem dumb in a rare few momments, and I think alot more could have been done with 2001 manaics in a village, but still it's ok. 7.5/10
Blood, Gore, Sex - When I was done with this movie, I felt like I had been served a full course meal, so if blood, gore and sex is your thing, ... ...asked

Charchters - The teens are your typical movie type a (Clueless, obessed with beer and sex) that could have escaped quite easily at the begining but didnt, go figure. The manaics have their highlights and their let downs within a whole, the kid who kill's cats was my second favourite. And its safe to say, Robert England delivered a solid performance as the mayor
