The world of films has long since been riddled with computer game spin-offs. Generally these are dire, melancholy affairs not worthy of note. No matter how good the game was, the films tend not to match up. Let us remember Kylie's dire effort in Streetfighter, or more recently the painfully bad Max Payne movie.
Like all things though, there is sometimes a film that rises from the ashes, like a pheonix, to conquer the movie world. Resident evil made a slowish start. The first film was watchable, and for a fan of the games like myself, it was entertaining. It seems, that the series is getting stronger, though, as apocalypse turns out to be a rip-roaring success. Highly enjoyable, and memorable for more than just Milla Jovavic (or, Milla yoyo-a-bit.). Yes she is a fox, but she could also kick your ass! The perfect woman!
We left the last film with Alice (Yoyo-a-bit.), seemingly escaping the horrors of the hive. Her escape is thwarted by umbrella, the evil corporation behind the t-virus. Her friend Matt, who was the only other survivor of the hive, was also taken by umbrella, but he was taken to be in the nemesis project. Umbrella release the t-virus upon Racoon city. The city was chosen as it could be locked down, to contain the spread of the virus if need be. Then, into the zombie covered streets, the company unleashes its two champions. Good versus evil, and there can only be one winner. Alice, is pitted against this new foe (nemisis.), along with the hoards of the usual suspects (zombies, zombie dogs, and lickers.). Can Alice possible succed, against the odds?
Typically thin plot line, I grant you. But don't be fooled. What we have here, is a visually impressive, high action movie. Add this with Alice's unique ability to bend her body in all the right ways, and you have a movie that I truly enjoyed. Ok, so I enjoyed it a bit too much at times, but the action is full paced, and together with the funky soundtrack it is very exciting.
The zombies are believeable. The effects are very good, with blood galore (the heinz ketchup factory must have had a good payday!). And the terror is realised effectively. You believe that you are trapped alongside the heroes, and that you are hiding from the bad guys. Nemisis has to be seen to be believed, and is definately a suitable adversary to the gorgeous Alice.
The film melds together plot elements from the second and third games. Indeed, it is the third game that includes the nemisis project. Lots of characters from the game are included. One of my favourites has to be Jill, played by Sienna Guillory. For a start the woman is beautiful, and again she could kick your ass (I seem to be displaying some kind of wierd fetish like behaviour, here!), but she also displays a kind of weakness that Alice never would.
Roles
Milla Jovovich - Alice Sienna Guillory - Jill Valentine Oded Fehr Carlos - Olivera Zack Ward - Nicholai Ginovaef Thomas Kretschmann - Major Timothy Cain Sandrine Holt - Terri Morales Jared Harris - Dr. Charles Ashford Mike Epps - L.J. Sophie Vavasseur - Angela Ashford Iain Glen - Dr. Sam Isaacs Matthew G. Taylor - The Nemesis
I don't think that the performances are fantastic, but if you like a good action movie, then you cannot really go too far wrong. Non-stop, from the word go, Apocalypse does not let you rest. If you rest, you die. Remember, they will not stop. They cannot die. And they are coming!
