Resident Evil Apocalypse is a 2004 science fiction/ horror film and the sequel to the 2002 film Resident Evil. It was made on a budget of £21.5,000,000 and grossed an estimated £64,697,418 at the box office. The critics ended up disliking this film even more than the previous instalment, with one critic stating that this movie is an utter waste of time! The film is rated 15 and runs for approximately 98 minutes.
This film is directed by Alexander Witt, the previous was done by Paul Anderson who decided to take a backseat role as the producer, maybe he didn’t want to deal with all the flack he got for the last film but in the mean time still make some money! Resident Evil Apocalypse was his directorial debut, his other big role was as the 2nd unit director on Casino Royale.
International supermodel Milla Jovovich reprises her role as Alice for the second instalment of the horror series. This time she’s joined by an all new cast consisting of: Oded Fehr (The Mummy), Sienna Guillory (Eragon) and Mike Epps (The Fighting Temptations).
Resident Evil Apocalypse begins straight after the first film ends. Alice has just broken out of the Umbrella Corporation to discover that the devastation she faced in The Hive is infact causing chaos all over the world. While Alice goes off in search of survivors we encounter the state being
closed off by the leaders of the government and Umbrella Corporation. The T virus has infected most of the state and by closing off all exit points they’re letting all the unaffected die without any remorse.
A small group of survivors however are adamant that they are going to survive, they consist of a highly trained SWAT officer and another police woman, again highly equipped with martial arts, a news reporter and a stoner! They eventually meet up with Alice who helps them to make it out of the city. Meanwhile a man partly responsible for the virus outbreak contacts the group of survivors, his daughter is missing and he informs them that if they find her and bring her to safety he will save them seats on the last flight out of the highly infected city…
I recently bought the Resident Evil box-set online as I hadn’t seen the first two films in a while and wanted to see if I would still enjoy them as much as I did the first time around. Unfortunately now I’ve matured I see the films differently and sadly didn’t enjoy them as much as I had done a couple of years ago.
This film does something that a lot of films doesn’t, it has a lot going on within it yet has no plotline whatsoever! There’s action right the way through this film which does make it enjoyable and bearable to watch yet there is no sign of a storyline until about 45 minutes into the film and even then it’s extremely weak one.
I must say that I’m torn between whether I enjoyed this film more than the first one and I don’t think I did, yes there’s a lot of action however without the inclusion of any kind of storyline you find yourself tiring of it quickly and simply waiting for it to end. There was a two year gap between the first film and the second and I would have thought that that gave the writers ample time to come up with a gripping storyline, yet in reality it didn’t.
The first film was left open at the end which in my opinion made it easy for them to carry on the story in this sequel, I believe that there were a lot of different ways to go with this film and unfortunately the writers don’t manage to pull it off. There really doesn’t seem like a point to this film, I think maybe it was just a stepping stone to the superior third instalment or maybe it was just a way to stretch the storyline out and make a bit of extra cash, either way this was quite a disappointing film.
Even though I’ve slated this film a lot I find it terribly hard to actually hate these films, I know I should because lets face it they are pretty awful however there just seems to be something strangely entertaining about these films. Resident Evil Apocalypse is a lot less complicated than the first film, not that that’s any kind of achievement. It just goes to make the film easier to watch and follow, as there’s no real storyline to grasp you simply get dragged into the action. This is brainless entertainment and unfortunately I like it!
They use some really annoying and erratic camera angles in this film, something that fortunately isn’t included in the first or the third film. I recall one scene in particular in the grave yard where the zombies come to life, the survivors attempt fight back and for about a minute and a half you have to endure jolting camera angles. I think the director tried to be smart and show off all the action together in succession however he failed miserably, the angles were terrible irritating and I was glad when the scene was over.
Very much like the first film the acting is pretty dire, I think that anyone off the streets could have had a part in this film and would have very likely done a better job of it. One character in particular that I disliked was Jill Valentine played by Sienna Guillory, her acting was truly cringe worthy. It was strange how she was overdramatic when the scene didn’t call for it and then when the scene did need it, it almost looked like she was making no effort at all. Of course throughout the film she was wearing extremely short shorts much like Angelina Jolie wore in Tomb Raider and the same sort of style that Milla Jovovich wears in the film. A supermodel and possibly the most beautiful woman in the world probably aren’t the best choices of people to compete against in the sex symbol cases!
In conclusion I’d say that if you are a fan of the first film or the Resident Evil franchise in general then you’re likely to enjoy this. If you’re not familiar with the series and are just wanting a good zombie horror to watch then I suggest looking elsewhere as unfortunately in the case of Resident Evil Apocalypse you haven’t found it. This, to put it bluntly is mind numbing entertainment at it’s excruciating best and it’s either something that you’ll love or you’ll hate!
