The original Resident Evil film was based on the 1996 Playstsion game of the same name. It was an excellent game which drew heavily on the classic zombie horror films of the 1970s and then went a notch further by deeply emmersing the player into the action, thus fulfilling every horror fans fantasy.
With serval follow up games following various characters and their fight against 'umbrella' corporation, a film seemed like a sure fire hit.
This was released in 2002 with mixed reception. Milla Jovovich starred as Alice, the amnesiac heroine with training and skills beyond belief. The film had some nice touches, however now it was a film based on several games, based on several films which meant the plot felt disjoined by trying to come up without something new - while pleaseing everyone.
Resident Evil: Apocalypse picks up from where the first film finished. The people of Racoon City find themsleves trapped in an infected quarantine zone within the opening 10 minutes and thenit's time for our hero's (a collection of S.T.A.R.S. police personel and a reanimated Alice) to try and find a way out.
The film moves along at a quick pace and encorporates many of the locations and characters from the games, however once again this leads you to know really develop a sense of depth with the characters as most seem like nothing more than cameos and nods to kowing fans. More than once a chacter arrives, says their name, then is killed.
Some of the more big name sequances are also tragically wasted - chiefly the 'Nemesis' mutant who doesn't really sem to do anything useful in the film, other than a Terminator style rip off sequence at a shop and a massivly anticlimactic end fight sequence. The ending itself leaves alot to be desired and the only thing clarified is that the door is still open for a sequel.
However this film is not all that bad and infact I feel it surpasses the first film. A scene with a police sniper is lifted straight out of 'Dawn of the Dead' and is executed well, as is a death involving a camcorder. My favourite however is 'Jill Valentine' who is the second female lead and makes the sceen smoulder every time she appears in her 'Tomb Raider' wannabe outfit (lifted straight from the game).
I recommend this for a laugh on a quiet, wet weekday night. You know what you're getting with it but it does possess enough entertainment to avoid my ciao-wrath.
