Resident Evil was first released in 1996 as a video game. It was based around the members of a special forces team call S.T.A.R.S who have been sent to Racoon City to investigate a series of grisly murders only to be dragged into the twisted world of the undead themselves. You play the character of Chris Redfield where you have to battle zombies and solve the mystery as to why these zombies have come to be and why this international corporation 'Umbrella' is involved, being the main aim of the game.
Due to the games phenomenal success a sequel was followed in 1998 cleverly entitled Resident Evil 2. It was set around the characters of Leon S Kennedy who has come to Racoon City to start a new job on the police force and Claire Redfield (sister of Chris Redfield) who has come to find her brother. Again, like the first game you get dragged into the world of the undead as soon as you begin and have to battle more zombies and bigger monsters to work out what's happened to the city with evidence found linking 'Umbrella' to the outbreak...again.
The game, also like the first recieved phenomenal success so a third game followed quickly in 1999 based solely around the character of Jill Valentine, set inbetween the events of the first and second game, who resigns from S.T.A.R.S and attempts to escape the viral infected city. The game is entitled Resident Evil: Nemesis and a lot of this game is used in the movie i am about to review: Resident Evil Apocalypse which is the reason why i am giving you this little backstory.
Due to the success of all 3 games a movie was put into production and in 2002 'Resident Evil' the movie was released starring Milla Jovovich as Alice, a young woman who wakes up in a mansion but does not know how she got there or why. Beneath her in an underground lab called 'The Hive', run by the international corporation called Umbrella, a virus has been unleashed turning all of it's medical research staff into flesh eating zombies. To be sure the virus doesn't escape and spread, Alice and a special task force including Matt (Eric Mabius) must enter and completely shut down the main computer of 'The Hive' named the 'Red Queen'.
Alice barely escapes with her life and makes it back to the mansion where she is taken along with Matt by a group of white lab coats where they are separated to be experimented on. We do not know what type of experiments have been carried out on Alice but Matt has been used in a research program called Nemesis. Alice wakes up in an empty medical exam room which she quickly escapes from easily, making her way onto the streets of Racoon City where she discovers that something has gone horribly wrong. The city is in ruins. And that is where Resident Evil: Apocalypse takes off from...
* rESIDENT EVIL APOCALYPSe *
Everything Alice and the special task force endured to stop the outbreak of the virus was all in vain as the virus has spread throughout Racoon City turning it's population into flesh-eating zombies. The city is shut down and sectioned off by Umbrella who are not allowing anyone to leave. We are introduced to Jill Valentine who as part of Racoon City Police department is trying to escape the city whilst shooting her way through hordes of zombies. She meets up with Alice finally in an amazing Church sequence involving Alice bursting through the stained glass windows of the church on a motorbike and saving Jill from the monsters she has encountered called the Lickers.
They then both have to work out a way to escape the city but something is wrong with Alice. She doesn't know what the scientists have done to her but suddenly she is stronger and faster, almost superhuman. Soon enough they meet up with a small group of special task force members including Carlos (Oded Fehr) who are also trying to escape the zombie infected city. Before long Alice recieves a mysterious phone call from a Dr Ashford who's daughter, Angie, is trapped within the city and he tells Alice that if she finds his daughter he will help her and her friends escape the city.
Finally she tracks Angie down in hiding in a local school. What follows there is an amazing, nail biting sequence involving an escape from a pack of rabid, viral infected dogs and a horrifying sequence involving a group of school children, also infected, feeding on a victim in a classroom. Meanwhile, Umbrella release 'project Nemesis', Matt from the first movie, into the city as a test to Alice's new found strength. Will she be able to escape the city with Jill and Carlos in time before it is nuked, eradicating the whole virus whilst also battling the Nemesis on the way who is a horrifying disfigured monster with a machine gun attached to its arm and a rocket launcher.
The movie has some more amazing sequences including the scene where Alice and the Nemesis come face to face resulting in a high energy, turbo charged, explosion filled, suspensful chase betwee the two which will most certainly take your breath out of you. Another great scene is where Alice runs down a vertical sky-scraper, again visually breathtaking, attached only by a wire to take out some security guards standing at the foot of the building. It's pretty cheesy at times, I mean there's no way this could happen in real life but that's not the point. It's just all good, action filled fun.

Extra's on the DVD include a cast commentary by Milla Jovovich, Oded Fehr and Sienna Guillory which is very entertaining. Milla and Oded are together watching the movie whilst Sienna is recorded separately for some reason but both are infused together. I was surprised by how funny the commentary by Milla and Oded was, i was literally laughing out loud at them with their mick-taking comments on the movie including:
Oded: They had to build a whole church for the church sequence as they couldn't find a church that would allow us to film there. Milla: Yeah I Know, what's up with that? The church is totally unsupporting of Hollywood.'
Other funny moments include them both, Milla and Oded, trying to tell us that the zombie noises were actually scripted and then going on to make the strange gurgling noises to describe them. It really is the most entertaining commentary i've ever heard and never tire of listening to it. Sienna's commentary is far more serious with her talking about the stunts of the movie, her training for the movie and what she did to prepare for her character. She gives a good insight into the making.
Other extra's include 20 deleted scenes, most of them just being extended ones, a blooper real which is mainly Milla fallin' over and pulling faces which was quite funny. And you also get 2 featurettes including 'Game Over: Resident Evil re-animated' a look at the history of the Resident Evil franchise which is very informative, entertaining and in-depth. Secondly, 'The Making Of The Movie' which shows how the stunts were set up, how they used CGI in the movie, how they designed the zombies and what type of movement they thought would be best for the zombies to have and it also includes interviews with the entire cast who give their take on the movie and what it was like to film at night constantly for several weeks.
And last but not least you get a photo gallery...yeah..pfft!
* tO SUM Up *
To be honest, if this film was released without any extra's i still would have bought it...but would not have been half as happy as i am with what i have now. The extras really do make the DVD, especially Milla who shows how funny she is, how clever and smart she really is, how focused she is on her work and how much she really believes in and loves everything that she does including 90% of the stunts. She is a breath of fresh air in an industry now filled with air-heads. This movie would probably only appeal to fans of the computer game series, it's not really looking to win oscars but that's what's great about it. It doesn't take itself too seriously, i bloody loved it! Go on, give it a try!
Advantages: Milla Jovovich is good at kicking ass.. Disadvantages: Terrible plot, effects and direction. Mind numbingly dumb.
...second movie adaptation of the Resident Evil video game franchise, was to be originally sub titled NEMESIS, which makes sense really when you consider the 3rd game in the series had the very same name. After careful examination of the films excruciatingly ... ...While the original RESIDENT EVIL was something of a disappointment, it did at least deliver a hundred minutes of entertainment that was slickly put together by director Paul Anderson. It is true that Anderson cannot write a decent script (he wrote both movies) to save his life, yet his direction on the first was competent enough to just about make up for that fact, he knew when to build tension and when to let the action rip. Here director Alexander ...

Advantages: Good story, The Nemesis is cool Disadvantages: Messy action, Weak characters
Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) Following a recent spate of zombie films of which the original Resident Evil (2002) was one of the first, Apocalypse has arrived. The previous film ended much like 28 Days Later began. A city drained of life from man made mistakes. I’m afraid I must say that that would have been a better film to follow than this one. But I don’t want to sell Apocalypse short. The story picks up a little before the last one left off, ... ...taken from the hugely popular Resident Evil playstation games, of which there are many. However, Paul WS Anderson’s pen does stray from the games in some places. It’s very easy to draw comparisons with Escape from New York (1981) because of the very similar isolated city and rescue themes, but the overall story does offer more than just this. The material mostly by passes the second game and uses the third as its core. The Nemesis is handled well ...

DVD Description
Milla Jovovich is back with a vengeance as amnesiac, genetically-altered zombie ass-kicker, Alice, in this sequel to the 2002 hit film, which is based on the video game. This time around the sinister Umbrella Corporation sends a team of investigators into their destroyed underground lab (the ground-zero of carnage in the previous film) and unwittingly unleash the still-staggering zombies and monsters out into the population of Raccoon City. Soon Umbrella has evacuated all of their own key employees and has shut everyone else inside to be devoured. A mastermind chemist's daughter gets left behind in the confusion, and she is the one ticket out for Alice and a handful of dwindling survivors, including the almost-as-tough lady cop, Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory). There's some nifty motorcycle riding, plenty of bullets and splattering blood, and even a new monster--the hulking, heavily-armoured, seriously ugly Nemesis. Comic actor Mike Epps is great as a pimped-out hustler who handles the whole dead-coming-back-to-life thing with cool nonchalance. In some ways, this non-stop creep show is even an improvement over the original, with a pervasive mood of nihilistic corporate dehumanisation adding extra concern about the future of civilization to the mix of shooting, dying, punching, and munching.
