Why I waited so long to actually sit down and watch this movie is beyond me. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that I’m not a huge football fan. However, a co-worker highly recommended it, stating it was a movie her entire family loved. Just last night, I decided to see for myself.
“Remember the Titans” is a true-story, based on a town in northern Virginia. At that time the town, Alexandria, was relatively rural and bore little resemblance to what it has become today. It is now part of the vast suburbia surrounding Washington, DC, and is bustling with activity.
Before I watched this movie, I didn’t realize that it was based on a true story, or that it took place in my home state. I was shocked when I heard the characters in the film speak. Their accent was much more like that of southern Virginians. It had that slow drawl that is so commonly heard around the community where I live and the area of Virginia, both south and west of Alexandria. I cannot say that this is how Alexandrians used to sound, as I had not visited the city when this movie took place over 30 years ago, in 1971.
I
do well remember the year 1971, as it is the year that my parents separated. It was a time when America was struggling with desegregation. Neither side was happy; it seemed that many were wondering if the right choice had been made to integrate schools and neighborhoods. This particular social problem is paramount to the storyline of this remarkable movie and is very realistically portrayed.
“Remember the Titans” got off to an engaging start and continued throughout to the very end. I literally sat in front of the television, mesmerized, feeling as though I was traveling back in time.
The main character of the is movie Herman Boone, a high school football coach recruited from the neighboring state of North Carolina and transplanted to T.C. Williams High School in Virginia. Boonin has been selected to take the place of Bill Yoast, the championship-winning and much-loved coach of T.C. Williams. Both Yoast and his players are shocked and angered by the decision to replace him with another coach – and a black one at that.
Yoast initially decides to take another head coaching position with a high school in another town; however, Boonin eventually persuades him to stay on at T.C. Williams, as his assistant. Yoast only decides to stay when he learns that the majority of his “star” athletes are willing to drop out of the game completely unless they can play for him.
The story that unfolds is both amazing and deeply touching. Together, these two men from completely different backgrounds with their seemingly unyielding unique coaching styles find common ground to make their football team, “The Titans,” an unbeatable force bonded by respect for their fellow players and an even greater respect for both coaches. It seems as though each player must be “broken” until he good in each and every one of his teammates. The result is absolute perfection, both on the playing field and off.
There are outstanding performances by both Denzel Washington (Herman Boonin) and Bill Yoast (Will Patton). Heartbreaking performances are rendered by other characters, Gerry Bertier (Ryan Hurst) and Julius Campbell (Wood Harris).
This film is sure to bring the viewer to laughter and tears. It is truly a story of heartbreak and triumph that will touch your heart. I was emotionally drained after watching this wonderful story, as I had cried with sadness and felt giddy with joy watching the meshing of two different cultures form an everlasting bond that could not ever be broken.
The fact that this film is based on a true story made it all the more moving. The characters lived were forever transformed in a positive way that becomes evident at the close of the film.

Although I have not yet heard this, a soundtrack has been released to accompany this movie. Based on the music featured in this film, I have decided that I will purchase it. The songs in the movie were wonderful as they were classics during the time period depicted and fit the scenes in which they were played outstandingly. These songs were quite popular in the late ‘60’s and early ‘70’s and hold special memories for me.
I highly recommend “Remember the Titans” as a family movie. It was given a “PG” rating here in the U.S. because of some of the language and also some isolated violence. However, any child over the age of 10 should be able to watch this film and enjoy. The violence is not “overdone” and is simply a true portrayal of this riveting, yet troubling period of American history.
