Denzel Washington and Will Patton star in this film, which is based on a true story. Set in the early seventies, this movie tells the tale of a community torn apart when two school communities, one black and one white, have to come together when the schools combine. The story is told through the eyes of the two football coaches (and by football I mean American football, not soccer) who have to work together to ensure the team can come together as one and to inspire the young men to put aside their racial differences and prejudices and come together for the good of the team, the school and the whole community.
Football coach Bill Yoast (Patton) has lead his team to victory for 15 seasons, but is demoted and replaced by Herman Boone (Washington) in a move to placate the black community during the merger of the two schools. Boone is tough and opinionated and runs the football team like an army regiment, whilst Yoast is more sympathetic and caring. It isn't long before the two are at odds as to how to run the team and motivate the young men and make them the best that they can be. The question is whether the two coaches can overcome their differences and maybe even become friends and turn these two groups of young men into a winning combination and champions.
This really wasn't my cup of tea, but my son picked up the video case and decided it looked good so the decision was made. I really wasn't sure, but ten minutes into the film, I was hooked. Finally a fantastic, insprational story about challenging racism and bigotry that doesn't rely on violence and excessive bad language to get it's point across. Whilst you watch it you run through a variety of emotions from anger, to sadness, to joy and anger. You feel the pain, the joy, the glory and the let downs. The fact that the film actually feature American football is unimportant, and even die hard 'sports haters' can't fail to enjoy the film and it's messages, both obvious and subliminal.
Washington and Patton make a unique team, contradicting each others characters as complete opposites and yet the combination works. Both are stubborn and have a different approach and their own unique way with the young men. Yoast's nine year old daughter is also football mad and is very outspoken and a very strong character, a tomboy who makes you laugh and cringe everytime she opens her mouth to 'stick up' for her father. Boone's daughter is very girly and seems to hate football, and the two girls couldn't be more different and you also see a parallell relationship developing between the two girls that almost mirrors what is going on between their fathers.
Can the young men come together and play football? Can they learn to survive and live together? Can the football team make an entire community change the way it lives and breathes? Remember the Titans is a movie that makes you think hard about the way you see people, and makes you realise that skin colour isn't important and that the most important thing a person can possess is heart.
This film is inspiration through perspiration. Definately recommended as a movie to make you think. Watch this film, and I guarantee that just like me, you too will REMEMBER THE TITANS.

Advantages: Awesome! Soundtrack, acting, script, everything is top notch. Disadvantages: Predicatable, you laread know the outcome of the movie from the pre-release blurb.
Advantages: Denzel Washington. Jerry Bruckheimer. Believable Characters. Realism (Adaptations of real situations always get me!) Disadvantages: A bit too long, but well worth it.
