It's an adaptation of a true story. The year is 1971, and in Virginia, TC Williams High School has just become the first mixed race school in the district. The first group to experience the racial tension is the football team, whose existing coach has been forced to move aside to let a new, black coach, Coach Boone takeover.
The team is split right down the middle when they go to camp. There's one big white guy wanting to do defence, who is the first person to bridge the gap. On the field, its still whites against blacks, but slowly things change. By the end of the training camp, they are a team and, more importantly, they are friends, and feel that they can take on the world.
But when they return home, instead of a welcome, they find controversy, as every white member of the community is opposed to the co-race school, and especially the co-race football team. They win their first match but slowly their friends, who are bigots, attempt to turn the players.
It's a constant question of whether the team will remain a team, or whether they will return to the infighting that occurred at camp. In fact, it just makes them bond together even stronger.
Now I'm biased as I think that Denzel Washington is a great actor anyway (he should've beaten Kevin Spacey for the Best Actor Oscar last year). His portrayal of Coach Boone is brilliant. It's a shame because I know that this film won't be that successful in the UK as its about a sport that we don't understand. The movie was made by Jerry Bruckheimer Films, yet there was not an explosion in site! Anything that he turns his hand to will be a success (can't wait for Pearl Harbor).
This is a film that should not be missed.
