I saw this film while in New York. The film stars Denzel Washington as an american football coach called Herman Boone. He comes to a part of america in the late 50's/early 60's where any other colour other than white is frowned upon. He takes up a job as head coach to the school pushing out longtime football coach Bill Yoast (Will Patton). Naturally at first there is some tension in the community with Boone not getting much support. He brings blacks in to play football and mixes them with the whites. Naturally there is more tension. HOwever he takes all the players on a training camp where naturally he teahces them all to get along. This in turn makes the team play better and actually brings the blacks and whites together in the community eventually.
Now on reading the above you'd probably think that the film sounds a bit sentimental and isn't anything new. You'd be right but the film is handled in such a way that it becomes gripping, emotional, uplifting and hughely enjoyable. Washington turns in a powerhouse performance which really drives the film. He is joined by a whole host of young actors as the players who really give the film an appeal and grounding to the younger generations.
Football is merely the back story to a film which is more about racial predjudice and how events that people have similar interests in can bring them together. Also add to this that the story is true and that these characters aer still living.
Visually it's very well shot with rich colours and some exciting football scenes. The soundtrack also features some great old soul music which gives you a good sense of the era. It's a film that is devoid of any real violence and has no sex or swearing making it easily accessible to all ages. That's a rare thing in movies recently.
It's been a big hit in the states and I can see it doing well over here.
