...delightful is more like it. i must admit, i am a HUGE price fan and have every single one of his movies, so i do tend to be a bit biased. HOWEVER, this is still one of my top three favorites of his work, along with "theatre of blood" and "masque of the red death".
price stars as a concert organist who is rushing home from a performance to see his wife when she dies on the operating table. supposedly dying himself as well in accident, dr. phibes (who has a doctorate in theology) is really still alive, although a mangled mess, and uses the ten plagues of egypt to kill off the doctors that allowed his wife to die. terry-thomas and hugh griffith are delightful in cameos, and virginia north as phibes' silent assistant vulnavia is delightful, festooned in one ridiculous ensemble after another.
where can i begin when dicussing the merits...

Nireno is hugely amusing as Cleopatra’s gay confidant, and is sung fluidly by Moroccan counter-tenor Rachid Ben Abdeslam. He gets his own hilarious scene of Bollywood-style dancing, but later turns quite touching in pantomime in the final act, in which he gives Sesto moral support in his bid to kill Tolomeo.
The finale has the chorus singing the celebratory ‘Ritorni omai nel nostro core’ after a cheerful love duet between the handsomely dressed Cesare and Cleopatra, ‘Caro...

...The Review - As with all of Wes Anderson's films The Royal Tenenbaums is a genuine love it or hate it film. The off beat humour and sense of bizarre will be loved by Anderson lovers, the fantastic cast, the smart screenplay and the tragi-comedy style is sure to entertain fans of Rushmore. Yet those looking for a slap stick comedy should look away because this isn't the film for you. Much of the comedy comes from the films wonderful one liners or it's unique sight gags such as Ben Stillers character Chas dressing his two sons in the same red tracksuit that he wears. The film isn't the normal run of the mill comedy, these characters are brought to life by the brilliant ensemble cast and in the slower moments of the film there some heart breaking scenes that remind the viewer that this is one of the cleverest comedies in recent years....
